 The Prince of Wales,Prince Charles

The Prince of Wales is the Queen’s eldest son and first in line to the throne.

On 29 July 1981 he married Lady Diana Spencer, who became the Princess of Wales. The couple had two sons, William and Harry. They later separated and their marriage was dissolved in 1996. On 31 August 1997, the princess was killed in a car crash in Paris.

Prince Charles married Camilla Parker Bowles on 9 April 2005. As heir to the throne, his main duties are to support the Queen in her royal commitments.

Charles, Prince of Wales, was born Charles Philip Arthur George on November 14, 1948. While his own children and three of his grandchildren were all born in the same hospital—the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in London—Charles was born in Buckingham Palace.

Prince Charles

According to biographer Sally Bedell Smith, while Elizabeth was “delighted” by her first baby, she was often absent when Charles was an infant, instead traveling to be with Prince Philip in Malta where he’d been posted for Royal Navy duty. Smith wrote, “Prince Philip scarcely knew his son for the first two years of the boy’s life, though on his return from overseas duty he did take the time to teach Charles to shoot and fish, and to swim in the Buckingham Palace pool.”

Prince Charles was 4 years old at the time of his mother’s 1953 coronation, and her royal commitments, including a six month Commonwealth tour, took her and Philip around the globe while Charles and his sister stayed at home with their caretakers. Historian Robert Lacy, who has served as an advisor for The Crown, told Town & Country that the Queen “had been brought up in that style herself, after all, with her parents leaving her at home and entrusting her entire schooling to a governess and home tutors.”

Prince Charles

Most royal biographers paint the picture of a lonely childhood for the allegedly introverted Charles, followed by years abroad at Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland. Charles would eventually become an avid polo player—he met his future second wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles, at a polo match. Charles’s departure for the Royal Navy reportedly ended their relationship, and they went on to marry other people: Charles’s relationship with his first wife, Lady Diana Spencer was (and still is), a subject of wide public fascination.

Now 72, Prince Charles is the longest-serving heir apparent to the English throne in British history. When asked by a journalist when he first realized he was meant to be king one day, Charles said, “I think it’s something that dawns on you with the most ghastly inexorable sense. I didn’t wake up in my pram and say: ‘Yippie, I…’ But I think it just dawns on you slowly that people are interested in one, and slowly you get the idea that you have a certain duty and responsibility.”

Actor Josh O’Connor plays Prince Charles in The Crown’s third and fourth seasons. He joked in a casting statement that he “has the ears for the part.” Ultimately, O’Connor is well aware that he’s playing a version of Charles based on public perception of his life. “I think the first thing I learned is that it’s totally impossible to replicate the real man,” he told ES Magazine. “I don’t know who he is, none of us do.”

Prince Andrew

Prince Andrew, duke of York, in full Andrew Albert Christian Edward, duke of York, earl of Inverness,

and Baron Killyleagh, formerly Prince Andrew, (born February 19, 1960, London, England), British naval officer and royal, third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip,

duke of Edinburgh. He was the first child born to a reigning British monarch (male or female) since 1857. For the first 22 years of his life, until the birth of his nephew Prince William, he was second in the line of succession to the British throne, behind Charles, prince of Wales.

Andrew was born in Buckingham Palace, London. After early instruction there and at a primary school,

he attended the Gordonstoun boarding school in Scotland, as did Philip and Charles before him. In addition, he was briefly an exchange student at Lakefield College School in Ontario, Canada.

After completing his secondary education, he entered Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC), Dartmouth, in 1979 to train as a naval officer, following in his father’s footsteps. Andrew completed the course at BRNC in 1980. He then underwent pilot training in both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters and received his pilot’s wings in 1981. The following year, as a Royal Navy sublieutenant assigned to HMS Invincible, he flew helicopter missions in the Falkland Islands War.

Andrew remained on active duty after the war ended. Most of his service was in naval aviation, but he also commanded HMS Cottesmore, a mine countermeasures vessel,

between 1993 and 1994. In his last years of active duty, he worked in London for the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy. He retired in 2001 with the rank of commander but maintained his naval affiliation, reaching the honorary rank of vice admiral in 2015.

Prince Andrew

Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, popularly known as Fergie, on July 23, 1986. On the same day, he was created duke of York, the title traditionally carried by the British monarch’s second son and held for life. The previous duke of York had been his grandfather, King George VI, before the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936. Andrew and Sarah had two daughters: Princess Beatrice, born August 8, 1988, and Princess Eugenie, born March 23, 1990. The couple separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

After his retirement from active military service, Andrew took on more of the traditional duties of a royal family member, supporting charities and attending various ceremonies and events. In connection with his patronage of the Outward Bound Trust, an organization that sponsors outdoor adventures for youth, he was one of 40 people to rappel (abseil) down the side of the Shard, a skyscraper in London, in 2012.

In the early 21st century Andrew attracted controversy for his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, an American financier who became a convicted sex offender in 2008 and was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges when he committed suicide in August 2019. A woman named Virginia Giuffre claimed that in 2001, while underage, she was forced by Epstein to have sex with the prince. Andrew denied the allegations, and in November 2019 he gave a televised interview concerning Epstein. Andrew stated that he did not regret their friendship, which reportedly ended in 2010, and seemed to downplay Epstein’s conduct by calling it “unbecoming.” Those and other comments created an uproar, and days after the interview Andrew announced that he was stepping back from his public duties. In 2021 Giuffre filed a civil lawsuit against Andrew, claiming that he sexually abused her when she was 17.

Prince Charles

Princess Anne was born on August 15, 1950, and at the time of her birth, she was second in line to the throne,

behind her older brother Prince Charles. Now, she is fourteenth, following the arrivals of Prince Louis, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

Anne falls behind her younger brothers in the order of succession because male primogeniture served as protocol for

the royal family from the Act of Settlement of 1701 up until 2013.
The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013,

which ensures that a female heir cannot be surpassed in the line to the throne by a younger male heir, only applies to royals born after October 28,

2011.She holds the title of Princess Royal.

As the daughter of the monarch, Anne was awarded the title of princess at birth. In 1987, the Queen granted her the additional title of the Princess Royal. Princess Charlotte will most likely eventually hold the title, after Prince William becomes King, but it is not automatic.

As royal writer Duncan Larcombe told Town & Country last year, “It is a title that remains for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the death of the current Princess Royal.”

Princess Anne is currently married to Sir Timothy Laurence.
Laurence is a retired British naval officer and former equerry to the Queen; the couple wed in in a quiet ceremony in a Presbyterian church near Balmoral in December of 1992. Princess Anne was previously married to Captain Mark Phillips, an Olympic equestrian and retired military officer. She and Phillips have two children together: Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. Anne also has four grandchildren: Savannah Phillips, Isla Phillips, Mia Tindall, and Lena Tindall.

to broaden the reach of the Award, especially to young people considered to be at risk or marginalised in society.

In 2016, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award celebrated its 60th anniversary, with The Earl of Wessex playing a leading role. Over the past six and a half decades, almost 2.5 million young people have achieved Awards. There are currently one million participants in the initiative.
