Hello and welcome to solsarin. This post is about “air fryer crispy chicken wings“.

Chicken is the most common type of poultry in the world.[1] Owing to the relative ease and low cost of raising chickens—in comparison to mammals such as cattle or hogs—chicken meat (commonly called just “chicken”) and chicken eggs have become prevalent in numerous cuisines.

  3. Place the wings in a large bowl and add olive oil, garlic powder, and baking powder. Mix well.
  4. Add the seasoned wings in a single layer to the air fryer basket.
  5. Air Fry WIngs at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes, flipping the wings every 5 minutes. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and cook an additional 2 minutes for extra crispy skin. Use a digital meat thermometer to ensure the internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
  6. Carefully remove the air fryer wings from the air fryer, cover with your favorite sauce, and serve with your favorite sides.

NOTES

To make crispy wings in the air fryer is to add a little baking powder to the mixture. Baking powder is what helps make crispy skin.

This recipe was made using the Cosori Air Fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, you may need to adjust your cooking time accordingly. Smaller wings will cook faster than larger wings.

Place leftover beings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat the wings, place them in the preheated air fryer and air fryer at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 minutes, or until heated through. It is best to eat wings fresh on the day you cook them.

Air Fryer Chicken Wings

 Ingredients

Deselect All

Nonstick cooking spray, for the basket

2 pounds chicken wings, split at the joint and tips removed

Kosher salt

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup hot sauce, such as Frank’s RedHot

Ranch or blue cheese dressing, for serving

Directions

  1. Spray the basket of a 3.5-quart air fryer with cooking spray and set aside. Pat the chicken wings dry and sprinkle generously with salt. Place the wings in the fryer basket so they are not touching (if necessary to fit, line up the drumettes standing upright along the sides). Set the air fryer to 360 degrees F and cook for 12 minutes, then flip the wings with tongs and cook for 12 minutes more. Flip the wings again, increase the heat to 390 degrees F and cook until the outsides are extra-crispy, about 6 minutes more.
  2. Meanwhile, warm the butter in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave until melted, about 1 minute. Whisk in the hot sauce.
  3. Toss the wings with the butter mixture to coat in a large bowl and serve with dressing on the side.

AIR FRYER CRISPY CHICKEN WINGS

INGREDIENTS

  • 500g / 1 lbs Chicken Wings
  • 1 tablespoon Baking Powder – **NOT baking soda!**
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste

OPTIONAL BUFFALO SAUCE

  • 3 tablespoon Butter
  • ¼ cup Frank’s Hot Sauce (or more, to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic Powder

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Dry the wings as much as you can with paper towel – less moisture left on them, the more crispy the skin! Add chicken wings to a bowl with the baking powder, paprika, garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss with your hands to ensure everything is evenly coated.
  2. Arrange the wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket with a little space in between each wing. Don’t crowd your wings – you may need to cook in batches if you have a smaller air fryer.
  3. Cook on 150C / 300F for 15 minutes, then 200C / 400F for 10-15 minutes until cooked through. You can confirm this by using a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature of the wings are 74C / 165F (you only need to test the biggest one!). If serving as is, you can serve immediately with your favourite sauce.
  4. For the optional buffalo sauce- mix the ingredients in a small saucepan on medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly reduced and thickened.
  5. Add your wings to the saucepan and toss to coat in the buffalo sauce. Return the wings to the air fryer on 200C for 2 minutes or so to crisp up once more with the sauce. Serve immediately.

NOTES

  • If you love extra spicy wings, add some cayenne pepper to the wings before you cook them!
  • If you have an oven-style air fryer with multiple racks I’d encourage you not to make multiple racks of chicken wings at the same time if the ultimate goal is to get crispy chicken wings. Fat from the chicken slowly drips off the top rack onto the others and definitely impacts the overall crispiness.
  • I highly recommend investing in a meat thermometer. You can get a decent cheap one for around $10-$15 but it takes all the guess work out of whether meat is cooked or not. You’ll want to check the internal temperature of the wings are 74C / 165F before serving. You only need to test the biggest one – and you insert the thermometer in the meatiest part of the wing, away from the bone.
  • Feel free to double or triple the recipe.

Can you use baking powder on air fryer wings?

Yep, that is what we are getting to. You can use a baggie and kinda’ toss them with it so it gets on there evenly, in a bowl works, or lay on a baking sheet and sprinkle on. The key is to not cake it on but make sure all sides are touched with it lightly as a sprinkle of sorts. Amount will vary slightly depending on how large your pieces are.

What does baking powder do to fried chicken wings?

It kinda’ kick starts the browning process of the skin. So yes you could otherwise get the outside crisp but this just turns the level up a bit from crunchy to CRUNCHY in a little less time. Now another variation in cook time is just how golden brown you want them to be. Don’t get irritated if timing isn’t exactly dead on, it always varies just a bit.

HOW TO REHEAT WINGS IN THE AIR FRYER?

Reheat wings in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for about 5 minutes, until hot.

CAN YOU FREEZE AIR FRYER CHICKEN WINGS?

Yes, freeze air fryer chicken drumettes in an airtight container the freezer for 2-3 months.

HOW LONG TO COOK FROZEN CHICKEN WINGS IN AN AIR FRYER?

Air fry frozen chicken wings for 25 minutes at 250 degrees F (that’s 10 minutes longer than thawed ones), then flip, increase heat, and proceed with the same cooking time (15-20 more minutes), until crispy and cooked through.

If you prefer to thaw the chicken wings first (for more even cooking), you can do so in a few ways:

  • Water: Put the wings in a zip top bag (not straight into the water!), then place the bag into a bowl. Fill the bowl with cold water and use something heavy to submerge the wings in the water.
  • Microwave: The defrost setting on your microwave is by far the fastest way to thaw chicken wings, but can lead to pre-cooked spots. Select the weight of wings you have, and rotate frequently if your microwave doesn’t have a turntable. (Cook immediately with this method.)
  • Fridge: Thaw frozen chicken wings overnight in the refrigerator.

Can I Bake these in a traditional oven?

It takes significantly longer to achieve crispy chicken wings in the oven. To bake these chicken wings in a conventional oven, preheat oven to 400˚F and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until crispy, flipping the wings after 30 minutes.
