Utility bicycle

utility bicycle, city bicycleurban bicycle, European city bike (ECB), classic bike or simply city-bike, is a bicycle designed for frequent short, moderately paced rides through relatively flat urban areas. It is a form of utility bicycle commonly seen around the world, built to facilitate everyday riding in normal clothes in a variety of weather conditions. It is therefore a bicycle designed for practical transportation, as opposed to those primarily for recreation and competition, such as touring bicycles, racing bicycles, and mountain bicycles. Utility bicycles are the most common form globally, and comprise the vast majority found in the developing world. City bikes may be individually owned or operated as part of a public bike sharing scheme.

Generally as they are more suitable for urban environments, they focus more on comfort and practicality instead of speed or efficiency. They normally have a slightly curved, roughly planar aligned and elevated handlebar, providing users an upright sitting position. They have fewer gears and they often are heavier than road bicycles and They might have the top central frame bar diagonally aligned for allowing easy mounting in and out and they might have a back or front frame for transport of items. The saddle is typically larger compared with other bicycles and the majority are provided with chain and tire protection against oil or dirt.

City Cycles

City Cycles is a progressive web application which allows users to search for bike shelters in various cities around the world.

Development process

Local Storage

To ensure that there is an element of data persistence City Cycles makes use of the browsers local Storage. However, this would not be possible without the use of angular services which enabled me to maintain a tidy and organised code base, but at the same time allowing me to fetch and request data in a swift and efficient manner.

Home Page

The home page is the first page the user will arrive at. Upon arrival the user will greet with a welcome message and a number of options which will enhance to users experience as they use the application.

Search Page / Home Page

Once the user has chosen whether to enable GPS or Manual search then the search bar will be displayed. This allows the user to search by city name. Again with the use of local Storage the users search history is saved for later use if the user wants to quickly search for available bike shelters. By calling the bike Service the home page fetched and displays the data in the form of a list. However, given a list could have more than forty shelters I decided to limit the number of shelters to ten per list. I achieved this by using JavaScript’s array slice method. For the recent search storage functionality I have allowed a maximum of four searches to be stored. I achieved this by using the array shift() method which allows me to remove the oldest search entry and insert the most recent search.

Shelter-details Page

Once the user chooses a shelter they will redirect to the shelter details page. This page displays valuable information to the user.

With the use of Chart.js I displayed the percentage bikes and stands available in the form of doughnut charts. This enables the user to quickly glance and fetch the required information especially if they are in a rush. I pass the shelter id and city name in the URL / Router module. This allows me to fetch the shelter data again and thus allowing me to pass latitude and longitude data to the weather Service which then calls the weather API to fetch the required data.

Settings Page

The settings page allows the user to customise the application as they wish. This page is completely reliant on local Storage as the users preferences store there. This ensures that this data is persistent which allows the application check whether or not the data needs to modify (Converting km/h to mph and temperature). This page makes use of CSS transitions, when the user clicks on the switch, if these animations where not implemented the movement would be much more sudden. Whenever the user changes a setting, it immediately takes effect.

Dashboard Page

The dashboard page allows the user to view their trip details provided they enable Geolocation and start the stop watch.

The Geolocation API is using extensively within this page. However, this functionality would be most beneficial in a city where the location accuracy would much higher than in more rural areas. Since this component uses coordinates to determine the distance travelled the user must be moving to see this functionality work.

I used the Haversine formula to calculate the distance between two coordinates, this formula is based on the earths circumference and uses it to calculate the distance. To ensure that the user can view their speed and distance travelled in their preferred unit of measurement I have developed functionality which converts km/h to mph.

I calculated the calories burned based on the trip duration, the weight of an average adult which is 62kg and MET value of 4 which is the recommended value for cycling at 10 km/h or over. This is the most exciting component to develop as it rewards you with interesting and useful information which could possibly develop further in future releases.

Favorites Page

The favorites page allows the user to save and quickly access their favorite bike shelters. The functionality in this page uses the local Service to store and fetch data from Local Storage. The user also has the ability to delete shelters from their favorites. This page encourages long term usage of City Cycles as it gives the user a reason to use the app time and time again. This is mainly due to its convenience when the user has very little time to check for shelters in their area.

Fat City Cycles

Fat City Cycles was started by Chris Chance in 1982. It was one of the early builders of mountain bikes on the East Coast of the United States. When Fat City moved from Somerville MA to South Glen Falls New York, many of the employees left behind went on to start Independent Fabrication.

History of Fat City Cycles

Chris Chance began building frames in 1977. He built his first mountain bike frame in 1982, The Fat Chance.  They closed its doors in Somerville in October 1994, when it was sold to a holding company which had acquired another bike company (Serotta) in Glens Falls, New York. The holding company moved the Fat City equipment to Glens Falls.

Fans and enthusiasts of the now-defunct Fat City Cycles and Fat Chance bicycles from around the world now share their bikes, stories and love of the brand at www.FatCogs.com, or Fat Chance Owners Group—the club of Fat fans everywhere.

All-City Cycles

We’re delighted to welcome All-City Cycles to Keep Pedalling

Founded in 2009 All-City have been on a mission to make products that people who love bikes want to own, or as they would say “bringing beauty back to production lines bicycles.

Their bikes are making from quality steel and are designing to be ‘keepers’, a bike to take you to places to see and experience new things where afterwards every ding and scratch is a reminder of a trip or tour.

Since All-City joined KP we have built some awesome custom builds around these framesets. We’ve organised our photos of custom builds by frame model; so click through these pages to see what we’ve previously created for our customers.

Website Redesign for City Cycles – A UX Case Study

Project Overview

As part of a Skillcrush UX course, I tasked with improving the user experience of an existing website for a client named City Cycles. The goal of the website is to allow users to reserve a bicycle to reach their destinations. City Cycles discovered their reservation process is inefficient, requiring users to call or email City Cycles every time they order and wait for confirmation. It’s hard for City Cycles to keep track of and reply to all the phone calls and emails. My goal was to improve the website’s UX, making the reservation process easier & more convenient for City Cycle customers, thus increasing the number of online reservations.

Problem Statement

In spite of having a website with a reservation system, City Cycles was receiving many calls and emails regarding bicycle reservations. After a brief research, I found that users find it hard to reserve a bicycle through the website. They find the website frustrating to use, hard to navigate and misleading.

Goal

My goal is to create a clear, user-friendly and affluent reservation system where the customer can book a bicycle online. Thus, increasing online reservation sales and minimizing phone calls & email for stakeholders.
