NOTES

To make crispy wings in the air fryer is to add a little baking powder to the mixture. Baking powder is what helps make crispy skin.
This recipe was made using the Cosori Air Fryer. If you’re using a different air fryer, you may need to adjust your cooking time accordingly. Smaller wings will cook faster than larger wings.
Place leftover beings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat the wings, place them in the preheated air fryer and air fryer at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 minutes, or until heated through. It is best to eat wings fresh on the day you cook them.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings (drumettes and wingettes only)
  • 2/3 teaspoon kosher salt (not fine table salt)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 Tablespoon corn starch

For the Honey Buffalo Sauce:

  • 4 Tablespoon salted butter, sliced
  • 1/4 cup pure honey
  • 1/4 cup Frank’s RedHot Original sauce

Instructions

  1. Pat Dry: Dry excess moisture from chicken wings with paper towels.
  2. Toss: In a bowl, toss chicken wings with salt, pepper, baking powder, and corn starch to coat all pieces well.
  3. Arrange: Place chicken wings in a single layer in air fryer basket/tray, taking care not to overcrowd. It’s essential for hot air to freely circulate on all sides of wing pieces (if possible, arrange some drumettes vertically along the cooking tray, for more space.)
  4. Cook: Set air fryer to 375F and cook wings for 24 minutes, turning them over with tongs halfway through. When done, turn wings over again and increase air fryer temperature to 400F for another 5 minutes, or just until the wings are crispy and golden. Repeat another batch as necessary, based on size of your air fryer.
  5. Sauce: While wings are cooking, combine honey buffalo sauce ingredients in a pan. Stir on low heat just until butter is melted. Cover to keep warm.
  6. Serve: When wings are done, toss with honey buffalo sauce and serve immediately. Serve with ranch dressing on the side, if desired.

Air Fryer Chicken Wings With Cornstarch, Flour or Baking Powder

This recipe will show you how to make the crispiest chicken wings in an air fryer. When you use an air fryer, you’ll enjoy tasty air fryer chicken wings with cornstarch (or flour) that are low in fat and full of juice. Enjoy them at home with your family and have a great time.

Ingredients

  • 1 kilogram or 8 chicken wings
  • 1 teaspoon minced black pepper
  • 3 minced garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or cooking spray
  • 1 cup flour or cornstarch

Extra ingredients

2 tablespoons apple vinegar

As an alternative to flour, add 1 tablespoon baking powder or 1 cup cornstarch to cover the skin. It can also be substituted with 1/2 cup self-rising flour.

Instructions

1. Wash the chicken wings thoroughly. Place them in a large bowl.

2. Put the chicken wings in a bowl and season them with black pepper, garlic, salt, and optionally vinegar to absorb the seasonings.

3. Coat the chicken wings with flour or cornstarch, remove the excess flour, and then spray them with oil.

4. Later, place the chicken wings into the air fryer basket at 400ºF (204ºC) for 20 minutes. Don’t stuff the basket, just put one layer, flipping them over halfway through. Prepare batches if necessary.

5. Serve your air fryer chicken wings with cornstarch (or flour) with a sauce of your choice! Add French fries or salad to complete the meal.

TIPS FOR THE BEST AIR FRYER WINGS

  • Let wings come to room temperature if you have time. This is not required, but letting them sit out for 20-30 minutes before cooking will help them cook more evenly.
  • Dry the skin. Moisture is the enemy of crispy skin, so patting dry with paper towels helps you achieve maximum crispiness.
  • Use the right salt ratio. A good rule of thumb for meat and poultry is a teaspoon of salt per pound of meat, but since chicken wings have mostly bones, only about 1/3 of their weight is actually meat. This air fryer chicken wing recipe is for 2 pounds of wings, which is about 11 ounces of meat, and that’s why I used 3/4 teaspoon of sea salt. Adjust accordingly if you make a bigger or smaller batch.
  • Sprinkle baking powder on the skin. This is the main trick for extra crispy skin! Don’t skip it.
  • Grease the air fryer if needed. Mine is pretty nonstick, but you can spray with cooking spray or brush lightly with olive oil before adding the wings if you like, for easier cleanup.
  • Don’t crowd the air fryer basket. This ensures that the air can flow through and crisp up the skin. It’s okay if the wings touch a little, but try not to have their entire sides touching. If you have patience to have them not touching each other at all, even better.
  • Start at low temperature. Cooking the wings at 250 degrees F first makes the meat super juicy. Also, if you are cooking frozen chicken wings in the air fryer, starting at low temp helps them cook more evenly.
  • Flip and max out the heat. Flipping halfway through helps with even cooking as well, and increasing the heat is necessary to crisp up the skin on the outside.
  • Check internal temperature. The best way to know the wings are done is to use a meat thermometer to confirm that the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F.

THE SECRET TO CRISPY AIR FRYER CHICKEN WINGS

To ensure the fat renders and the wings crisp, we air fry them at two separate temperatures.

  • First, air fryer the chicken wings at 360 degrees F for 24 minutes, turning once halfway through. This step renders the fat.
  • Then, turn up the heat to 390 degrees F. This high temperature crisps the outsides of the wings, leaving the interior meat moist.

The two-temperature approach is easy, less messy than baking soda, and not only can you put raw chicken in an air fryer, this method works for frozen air fryer chicken wings too.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Wings?

First off, you’ll want to whip up some homemade sauces. Light ranch is great for buffalo wings. Don’t forget to cut up some strips of carrots and celery to dip in the ranch as well. You could also make a homemade BBQ sauce with just a few ingredients you likely already have hanging around in your kitchen.

To make a well-rounded meal, pair your wings with air fryer french fries (you already have the air fryer out, why not use it again?) or a homemade caesar salad.

Does baking powder make chicken wings crispy?

During the cooking process, baking powder removes moisture from the skin and makes the food crispier. You can combine it with the mixture of spices, garlic, black pepper and sea salt. So dry rub the chicken wings and place them in the air fryer basket. With this preparation, eating healthy foods provides many benefits while on a keto diet.

Can you use baking powder on air fryer wings?

Yep, that is what we are getting to. You can use a baggie and kinda’ toss them with it so it gets on there evenly, in a bowl works, or lay on a baking sheet and sprinkle on. The key is to not cake it on but make sure all sides are touched with it lightly as a sprinkle of sorts. Amount will vary slightly depending on how large your pieces are.
