Pipe Tobacco Ingredients
Pipe tobacco is loose-leaf tobacco most commonly grown in northern middle Tennessee, western Kentucky, and Virginia. It is fire-cured, which involves slowly smoking the drying tobacco leaves over a smoldering hardwood fire inside of a barn or structure.
The process can take days to weeks, and the end result is a tobacco that is low in sugar and high in nicotine. Most pipe tobacco is aromatic, having had a flavoring added to the finished product that gives it a depth and richness in taste and smell.
Virginia
A popular gourmet tobacco in the pipe smoker’s world is Virginia leaf, also known as bright or brightleaf. This is tobacco that has been flue-cured—rapidly dried in a flue-curing barn at high temperature, in a week to 10 days, in clean air heated by a furnace. In the tobacco trade, Virginia tobacco is defined not by its place of origin but by the seed used, the method of harvesting leaves (when they are fully ripe, often to the point of yellowing) and the flue-curing process, which helps ensure a high natural sugar content in the cured product.
All of the various subcategories of Virginia—red, stoved, aged, lemon, bright or black—result from different kinds of processing, but they all began simply as flue-cured leaf. The modern flue-curing barn, called a “bulk barn,” does not actually look like a barn at all.
Virginia
It more closely resembles a big camper trailer without windows. The bulk barn is packed to capacity with ripe leaf, fresh from the field. The temperature is started at the low end of the operational range, around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, to avoid scalding the moist leaf and compromising flavor. As the leaf dries, the temperature is raised day by day to a finishing point near 165 degrees Fahrenheit after about 10 days.
The air is circulated and exchanged to help push the moisture out of the leaf. Rapid drying is essential to the creation of flue-cured Virginias because it quickly shuts down the leaf’s metabolic processes. The natural sugars are “locked in” before they can break down. It follows that only flue-curing can produce a true, naturally sugary Virginia pipe tobacco. (In today’s commercial markets, there is no air-dried Virginia, just as there is no flue-cured burley.) By the end of the curing process, the leaf is gold– or lemon-colored, and it is so dry and brittle it cannot be handled without shattering. Water misters are then used to reintroduce moisture to the leaf (about 14 percent by weight) to make the tobacco pliable again. It can then be removed from the bulk barn and baled for transport and further processing.

Tobacco Types
The tobacco you buy online or at your local shop is a blend of tobaccos from various parts of the world. Tobacco blenders will use different types of leaves to produce different flavors, burn rates, and mouthfeel.
Winemakers mix varietals to create unique flavors. Brewers add malt and hops to change the flavor of a beer. Tobacco blenders do the same with the following leaves:
- Virginia: Naturally sweet and light, it burns quick and adds a nice flavor to your smoke.
- Burley: Slow burner that has a nutty, relatively mild flavor.
- Perique: A Louisiana-based leaf with spicy notes.
- Bright: A North Carolina-based leaf with a mild flavor.
- Latakia: Hefty, smoky flavor that adds punch and color to your blend.
- Oriental: An overall category of Middle Eastern leaves (Latakia included) that produce a bold, spicy profile.
Blenders use different proportions of some of these tobaccos to create a unique overall flavor profile.
Aromatics
The tobacco aromas that often lull us into a world of cherries, blackberries and cream are the result of aromatics. One name you’ll hear a lot in this category is Cavendish, a mix of several different types of tobacco leaf that has a sweet smell.
My first tobacco, Danish Gold, was a Cavendish-style tobacco. I chose it after dipping my nose into several jars housing various fruit-forward blends; not my style, really. Danish Gold’s sweet but not fruit-heavy aroma won me over.
Aromatic blends get their distinct names and smells from what’s called “casing,” a syrup that includes said
flavors and sugar. This syrup is added during processing. The tobacco soaks up the flavors and is then heated
to remove excess moisture.
At the end of the process, some blenders add alcohol (rum, for example) to enhance the flavor.
Non-Aromatics
I found myself in my neighborhood tobacco haunt because I wanted to move beyond the sweet-smelling Danish Gold I bought. The resident tobacconist pointed me to a blend called Highlander, which is a mix of non-aromatic English tobacco and aromatics of the Cavendish variety. Non-aromatic means the tobacco doesn’t have any casing.
FDA Regulation of Pipe Tobacco
In 2016, FDA finalized a rule extending our regulatory authority to cover all tobacco products, including pipe tobacco. FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of pipe tobacco. This includes components and parts such as pipes, but excludes accessories such as lighters.
“Components” or “parts” include, among other things, software or an assembly of materials intended or reasonably expected to alter or affect the tobacco product’s performance, composition, constituents, or characteristics; or to be used with or for the human consumption of a tobacco product. from a tobacco leaf) is less porous than a cigarette wrapper, it doesn’t burn as thoroughly as a cigarette wrapper. This increases the concentration of cancer-causing substances like ammonia, tar, and carbon monoxide released into the air.
Despite their sweet aroma, water pipes are also dangerous to your health. During a typical hookah smoking session, you’ll inhale 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke that you’d get from a cigarette. Water pipes deliver at least as much nicotine and toxins as cigarettes, and they put users at a similar risk for cancer and other smoking-related diseases.
The same advice is true for pipe and cigar smokers as for cigarette smokers: Quit.
