Simple Apple Crisp (5 Ingredients!)

Seriously. Why is fall ALL about pumpkin? For me, not only do apples taste better, but I find them to infinitely more versatile and easy to work with. They don’t require you to use every muscle of your body to cut them open, scoop out the flesh and then cook the meat. And I love that they’re equally delicious raw or cooked. (Hi apples slathered with peanut butter or dipped in gooey caramel.)

Granted, I absolutely look forward to my requisite pumpkin dessert of the season, but once I’ve had one, I’m pretty much good to go.  On the other hand, I could eat an apple dessert on the regular during the cool fall months, and never tire of it.

Give me ALL of the Gourmet Candy Apples, Apple Cobbler with Sweet Cream (and biscuits!), and Apples with caramel yogurt.

Like most of America, we set out to go apple picking last week  some friends, and of course, came home with an obscene amount of apples. And while I was tempted to whip up something super impressive and elaborate, I decided to swing the other direction and do my best to come up with the most delicious way to let the apples shine, in the simplest way possible.

I wanted even the most novice of cooks to be able to make this, no problem, and I didn’t want a long list of ingredients to be in the mix.. So here she is: 5-Ingredient Apple Crisp.

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups rolled oats (quick-cooking oats are fine), divided
  • 6 cups sliced apples (whatever you’ve picked!)
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt, divided
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup + 1/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, slightly softened and divided

Equipment

  • Baking dish
  • Mixing bowls

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a small baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray. I used a 6×9 pan, if you don’t one, you can also use a loaf pan, but keep in mind, it’s a little bit smaller.
  • Add 1 cup oats to a food processor. Blend until it resembles flour. Set aside.
  • Toss apples with 2 tablespoons of oat flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt, cinnamon, and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Cut 2 tablespoons of butter into cubes. Toss with apples. Transfer to prepared baking dish.
  • Add remaining  oat flour, oats, salt, brown sugar and cinnamon to a medium bowl. Use fingers to cut butter into the flour until the butter is distributed and the mixture is crumbly.
  • Sprinkle the crumble on top of the apples. Bake until brown and crispy, about 45 minutes. Serve with vanilla ice cream if desired. You want it.

This was my Mom’s recipe. Easy and quick to make. Apples and walnuts are packed into a cinnamon spiced blonde brownie. Always a hit when I bring it to parties. Very moist and great to make in the fall when apples are plentiful.

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.

These Apple Dumplings are swimming in a buttery vanilla sauce. My family loves them. I hope you will, too.

Ingredients

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  • Butter a 7×11 inch baking pan. Separate biscuit dough into 8 pieces. Flatten each piece of dough into a circle. Wrap one biscuit around each apple half and place, seam side down, in pan.

In small bowl, combine sugar, water, melted butter and vanilla. Pour mixture over dumplings in pan. Sprinkle cinnamon on top. Bake 35 to 40 minutes, until golden. Serve hot.

Salted Caramel Apple Pie Bars

Made with a shortbread crust, spiced apple filling, streusel topping, and homemade salted caramel, apple pie bars are just as delicious as apple pie, but much simpler to make. You’ll love this fun twist on a classic dessert!

Without a doubt, apple pie is my favorite dessert. I love the combination of sweet and tart spiced apples with the buttery, flaky pie crust. It’s cozy, comforting, and simply irresistible. I have the recipe memorized and make it year-round, not just at Thanksgiving. Today’s recipe is the bar version of my salted caramel apple pie (the first apple pie recipe I ever shared on Sally’s Baking Addiction!). While I love the pie making process, sometimes we don’t have hours to prepare a dessert– which is where apple pie BARS come in. No pie crust, but same delicious flavors.

Ingredients

Shortbread Crust

  • 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)

Apple Filling

  • 2 large apples, peeled and thinly sliced (1/4 inch thick)*
  • 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Streusel

  • 1/2 cup (40g) old-fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup (70g) packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (31g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled)
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • homemade salted caramel or store-bought caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (149°C). Line the bottom and sides of an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper leaving enough overhang on all sides. Set aside.
  2. Make the crust: Stir the melted butter, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt together in a medium bowl. Add the flour and stir until everything is combined. Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes and then remove from the oven. (As the crust bakes, you can prepare the filling and streusel.)
  3. Make the apple filling: Combine the sliced apples, flour, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a large bowl until all of the apples are evenly coated. Set aside.
  4. Make the streusel: Whisk the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour together in a medium bowl. Cut in the chilled butter with a pastry blender or two forks (or even with your hands) until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  5. Turn the oven up to 350°F (177°C). Evenly layer the apples on top of the warm crust. It will look like there are too many apple slices, so layer them tightly and press them down to fit. Sprinkle the apple layer with streusel and bake for 30–35 minutes or until the streusel is golden brown.
  6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 20 minutes at room temperature, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours (or overnight). Lift the foil or parchment out of the pan using the overhang on the sides and cut into bars. I usually cut them into 16 smaller bars, but you can cut them into 12 larger bars. Once cut, drizzle some salted caramel sauce on top of each. These apple pie bars can be enjoyed warm, at room temperature, or even cold.

Apple Fritters

This is an old southern apple fritter recipe. When we got home from a trip through the South years ago, I found the recipe among the brochures I brought back. I’ve been making these easy apple fritters ever since.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cake flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 4 teaspoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
  • 2 teaspoons grated orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup chopped peeled tart apple
  • Oil for frying
  • Confectioners’ sugar

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, combine the egg, milk, butter, orange juice, zest and vanilla. Add to dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in apples.
  2. In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat 1/4 in. of oil to 375°. Drop batter by rounded tablespoons into oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve warm.

How do you store apple fritters?

Apple fritters are best served fresh and warm when you make them, but you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week. You can also freeze cooled fritters in a freezer-proof container for up to 2 months. All out of fritters? Make one of our all-time best apple desserts.

How do you make sure each apple fritter is consistent?

Avoid mixing the batter between frying batches of fritters. You can keep the size of the fritters roughly the same by using a tablespoon to drop the batter into the oil. For the best apple fritters, be sure not to overcrowd the frying pan. This will keep the temperature of the oil consistent for all of the batches.
