Christmas

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is preceded by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night.

Christmas Day is a public holiday in many countries, is celebrated religiously by a majority of Christians, as well as culturally by many non-Christians, and forms an integral part of the holiday season organized around it.

The traditional Christmas narrative recounted in the New Testament, known as the Nativity of Jesus, says that Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies. When Joseph and Mary arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a stable where the Christ Child was soon born, with angels proclaiming this news to shepherds who then spread the word.

There are different hypotheses regarding the date of Jesus’ birth and in the early fourth century, the church fixed the date as December 25. This corresponds to the traditional date of the winter solstice on the Roman calendar. It is exactly nine months after Annunciation on March 25, also the date of the spring equinox.

Most Christians celebrate on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar, which has been adopted almost universally in the civil calendars used in countries throughout the world. However, part of the Eastern Christian Churches celebrate Christmas on December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which currently corresponds to January 7 in the Gregorian calendar.

For Christians, believing that God came into the world in the form of man to atone for the sins of humanity, rather than knowing Jesus’ exact birth date, is considered to be the primary purpose in celebrating Christmas. The celebratory customs associated in various countries with Christmas have a mix of pre-Christian, Christian, and secular themes and origins.

Popular modern customs of the holiday include gift giving; completing an Advent calendar or Advent wreath; Christmas music and caroling; viewing a Nativity play; an exchange of Christmas cards; church services; a special meal; and the display of various Christmas decorations, including Christmas trees, Christmas lights, nativity scenes, garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, and holly.

In addition, several closely related and often interchangeable figures, known as Santa Claus, Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, and Christkind, are associated with bringing gifts to children during the Christmas season and have their own body of traditions and lore.

Because gift-giving and many other aspects of the Christmas festival involve heightened economic activity, the holiday has become a significant event and a key sales period for retailers and businesses. Over the past few centuries, Christmas has had a steadily growing economic effect in many regions of the world.

Sugar Cookie Martinis

Nothing says holiday fun like a cookie decorating party, complete with sugar cookies, frosting, and sprinkles galore. And while you’re decorating all those sugar cookies, why not top off your holiday fun with a sugar cookie martini, rimmed in frosting and dipped in sprinkles?

Our version of this festive favorite features Baileys and whole milk to give it that rich creaminess, along with vanilla vodka and amaretto for that sugar cookie vibe and… a tiny candy cane-shaped sugar cookie hanging off the rim. We suggest pre-made cookie dough and frosting for our cocktail décor, but if you’d like to make your own, check out our Best Sugar Cookie and Sugar Cookie Icing recipes.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE MARTINI
1/2 c. whole milk

1/4 c. Baileys

2 oz. vanilla vodka

2 oz. amaretto

Ice

FOR THE RIM
1/2 c. vanilla frosting

1/4 c. sprinkles, plus 1 tsp., divided

Pre-made sugar cookie dough

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll sugar cookie dough out to ¼” thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut out desired shapes then place cookies on prepared baking sheet. Bake until just set and lightly golden around the edges, 12 minutes. Let cool.
  2. Using an offset spatula, spread a thin layer of frosting onto rim of two martini glasses. Pour ¼ cup sprinkles onto a small plate then dip rims in sprinkles to coat. Use an offset to frost cookies with frosting then decorate with remaining 2 tablespoons sprinkles.
  3. In a cocktail shaker, combine milk, Baileys, vodka, and amaretto. Add ice and shake until cold. Pour into glasses and garnish rim with a cookie.

Cornflake Christmas Wreaths

Cornflake Christmas Wreaths take the cake when it comes to festive treats for the holiday cookie tray. With Christmas only 2 days away, you’ve probably about come to the end of your Christmas cookie making. I meant to share this recipe much earlier in the month, but I didn’t expect December to go by with such lightening speed.

These Christmas treats are so easy to make with just 3 ingredients plus enough green food coloring to give them that perfect evergreen color.

I used mini red M&Ms to decorate them with but Red Hots are probably the more traditional candy to use.

The Cornflake mixture is a little difficult to shape into wreath shapes. I did them free hand but I think it might be easier to use a round cookie or biscuit cutter, spray it well with cooking spray, and dump some cornflake mixture in the middle. Then you can use the end of a wooden spoon to put a hole in the middle.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 1 (10-ounce) package marshmallows
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons green food coloring
  • 4 1/2 cups Cornflake cereal
  • red hots or mini red M&Ms

Instructions

    • Melt butter in a large pot. Add marshmallows and stir until melted.
    • Stir in food coloring.
    • Stir in cereal.
    • Working quickly, use a greased 1/4 cup measuring cup to dump the cornflake mixture in mounds on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Use your fingers (grease them well) to form the mounds into wreath shapes.
  • Decorate with red M&Ms before they set.
  • Let cool completely and store in an airtight container.

Easy Pecan Pie Recipe

This homemade pecan pie is a classic old-fashioned dessert that’s perfect for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has the best combination of sweet and salty! Plus, it’s so easy to make that the kids can help with every step of this recipe. Give it a try and you’ll see why it’s our family’s favorite pecan pie recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Karo® Light OR Dark Corn Syrup
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 11/2 cups (6 ounces) coarsely chopped pecans
  • 1 (9-inch) unbaked OR frozen deep-dish pie crust

How to Make Pecan Pie

The steps for this recipe are so easy. All you do is mix together your Karo® Corn Syrup (you can use light or dark), your eggs, granulated sugar, butter, vanilla, and pecans!

You can certainly make your own pie crust, and I have a really great pie crust recipe here on my site, but for a time saver, which is great when you’re trying to prepare for a big meal, you can also use a frozen deep dish pie crust, or even the rolled up crusts. I love taking any short cuts I can around the holidays, when I have a lot of different dishes to prepare.

Trust me, the filling of this pie is the start of the show, so it doesn’t matter too much what kind of crust you use!

You can enjoy your pie with ice cream on top, whipped cream, or on it’s own. The crunchy pecans, paired with the sweet filling, is guaranteed to bit a hit.

The beauty of this Easy Pecan Pie recipe is that the prep time is less than 10 minutes, and you can make it in advance, so you’re not struggling with desserts the day of your family gathering. It’s a fantastic recipe, that you can rely on to turn out perfectly every time.

White chocolate rocky road

Ingredients

  • 80g butter, plus extra for the tin
  • 450g white chocolate, broken into chunks
  • 200g custard creams, broken into quarters
  • 50g shelled unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped
  • 75g dried cherries
  • 150g pink and white marshmallows (ensure vegetarian, if needed)
  • 40g white chocolate jazzies
  • 1 tsp sprinkles of your choice

Method

  • STEP 1

Butter a 20 x 5cm deep square baking tray and line with baking parchment. Melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the base of the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir occasionally until fully melted and smooth.

  • STEP 2

Mix the custard creams, pistachios, dried cherries and marshmallows into the melted chocolate mixture, reserving a little of each to decorate later, until evenly coated. Tip the rocky road mixture into the prepared tray, smooth the surface with the back of a wooden spoon, then poke the reserved ingredients and jazzies into the top and scatter with the sprinkles. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hrs until firm, or overnight.

  • STEP 3

Run a sharp kitchen knife under a hot tap, wipe dry, then cut the rocky road into 16 squares. Will keep in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
