A reporter from TIME in the late 1960s was told by the famous composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein that Elvis Presley was the greatest cultural force
of the 20th century. In response to the reporter’s skepticism about the cultural influence of other legendary artists like Picasso, Bernstein simply stated,
“It’s Elvis.”! With 108 Billboard Hot 100 hits, 129 charted albums, and 67 weeks at the top of the charts on his record, it’s a sentiment hard to argue with

Who Was Elvis Presley?

From humble beginnings, Elvis Presley became one of the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll. In the mid-1950s, he appeared on radio, television, and films. His death
on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42, was caused by his drug addiction. Presley has been one of the most popular music icons of all time since his death.

Early Life

Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8, 1935. (He later changed the spelling of his middle name to the biblical form of Aaron.) Presley was supposed to be a twin, but his brother, Jesse Garon (also spelled Jesse), died at birth. A rock and roll legend, Presley grew up from humble beginnings.

In his family, Presley had little money, and they moved from one place to another frequently. His parents, especially Gladys, loved him deeply, and he grew up
with a strong faith in God. In addition to attending the Assembly of God Church with his parents, Presley became very influenced by gospel music.

The first guitar Presley ever owned was a guitar that his mother gave him on his 11th birthday in 1946, and he won a talent show at Humes High School a
few years later. As a musician, he worked several jobs after graduating in 1953. During that year, he cut his first demo record at Sun Studio, and soon after,
Sam Phillips, the label owner, took the young singer under his wing. It wasn’t long before Presley began touring and recording to try to catch his first big
break. “That’s All Right” was Presley’s first single.

First No. 1 Hit: ‘Heartbreak Hotel’

As a result of his unusual musical style, provocative gyrating hips and good looks, Presley gained a following in 1955. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, helped
him sign with RCA Records that year. He scored his first No. 1 single with “Heartbreak Hotel,” as well as his first No. 1 album, Elvis Presley, and signed a
Paramount Pictures movie contract in 1956. His sexy dance moves caused uproar, but he was also a popular guest on a number of television variety shows.

Service in the military

As soon as he was drafted in 1957, Presley was inducted into the Army and served for about a year and a half in Germany. His first film, Love Me Tender (1956), was a box office success. Even a stint in the military couldn’t dampen his thriving career. After Presley received his draft notice in 1957, he spent about a year and a half in Germany. He was granted a leave for the funeral of his beloved mother, Gladys, shortly before he left for Europe. His spirits were lifted when he met a young teenager named Priscilla Beaulieu while in Germany. The pair fell in love and married on May 1, 1967, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Movies and Soundtracks

Upon leaving the Army in 1960, Presley resumed his career and hit the charts again with the soundtrack to his film GI Blues. As well as recording music, he acted in movies like Blue Hawaii (1961), Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962) and Viva Las Vegas (1964). Though critics and audiences often fell short of his films, they made a profit and sold well on their soundtracks. However, by the late 1960s, it appeared that the enigmatic performer was losing his box office appeal. In 1968, he recorded his first TV special, often referred to as “the ’68 Comeback.” With his performance, which showcased his skills as a singer and guitarist, he proved that he was still the “King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Daughter, Divorce From Priscilla and Drug Addiction

During this time, Presley’s personal life also seemed to be improving. His marriage to Priscilla in 1967 led to the birth of a daughter, Lisa Marie, the following year. Unfortunately, this joyous time was short lived. The couple divorced in 1973, and Priscilla gained custody of Lisa Marie. The marriage fell apart by the early 1970s. He was also struggling with other personal issues, including a prescription drug addiction; he was battling weight issues, and his destructive lifestyle caught up with him that fall when he was hospitalized due to drug use. Despite his personal obstacles, Presley remained a popular draw in Las Vegas and on tour. His last concert was in Indianapolis, Indiana, in June 1977. In preparation for his next tour, he returned home to his Memphis mansion, Graceland.

Death and Legacy

It was later determined that Presley’s death was due to his prescription drug use on August 16, 1977. At the age of 42, Presley died of heart failure. He was buried on Graceland, near the graves of his mother, Gladys, father Vernon, and grandmother, Minnie Mae Hood Presley.

In addition to popularizing rock ‘n’ roll, Presley won three Grammy Awards for gospel recordings. A major musical force, Presley had 18 No. 1 singles, including “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Good Luck Charm” and “Suspicious Minds,” and countless gold and platinum albums. He was one of the first performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986). In addition to rock, country and gospel, Presley contributed to several other musical genres as well. In 1998, Presley was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame; three years later, he was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Association’s Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

Graceland

Presley’s Memphis home, Graceland, is open to the public, and numerous fans from around the world visit the legendary residence annually, especially around Presley’s birthday and the anniversary of his death.

Thousands of fans traveled to Graceland on August 16, 2012 — the 35th anniversary of Presley’s death — for a special vigil in honor of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. During the gathering, fans held lit candles and stood outside of Presley’s home. Though the Presley family holds a tribute event each year to mark the anniversary of Presley’s death, the 2012 gathering was unique: Presley’s estranged wife, Priscilla, and daughter Lisa Marie appeared together for the first time at the annual event.

“You should see this from our point-of-view. It’s amazing,” Priscilla said during the event, according to the Washington Post. “The candles are lit. It’s truly a sight to behold … This is something that Elvis would never, ever have believed could have taken place here.”
