We are here to help.

In 2005, Exel became a subsidiary of Deutsche Post, a global logistics and supply chain company. As of February 2012, the company reported annual revenues of $4.2 billion.

History

NFC plc (formerly the National Freight Corporation, the nationalised transportation business in the United Kingdom created by the Labour government after the war) acquired several independent warehouse and transportation management companies in the United States in 1985.

Exel was rebranded Exel in 1992 and its Americas headquarters was located in Westerville, Ohio. As of 2000, Exel’s operations had expanded to Canada, Latin America, and South America. Additionally, the company’s portfolio of solutions expanded to include transportation management, freight consolidation, contract packaging, contract manufacturing, demand planning, and other supply chain services.

In May 2000, NFC plc merged with Ocean Group plc and adopted the name of its American subsidiary, Exel plc. Exel plc acquired Tibbett & Britten in August 2004, which was a leading contract logistics company based in the UK. Deutsche Post completed the acquisition of Exel plc on 14 December 2005.

Operational aspects

Under the Exel brand, Deutsche Post continues to operate in North America. DHL Exel Supply Chain was created by merging the remaining businesses with DHL Express. In North America, Exel operates 441 facilities and employs more than 40,000 people. Automotive, chemical, consumer, energy, industrial, life sciences, retail, and technology industries are all served by Exel.

Supply chain management, inbound to manufacturing, in-plant services, manufacturing, assembly, packing, warehousing, order fulfillment, transportation management, home delivery, and reverse logistics are some of the services we offer.

Discussions about controversy

Approximately 400 foreign workers enrolled in the J1 “cultural exchange” visa program struck in August 2011 at the main distribution center for Hershey candies.
Hershey’s Palmyra distribution center was run by Exel.
Staffing of the center was subcontracted to a company based in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, called SHS OnSite Solutions. During the recruitment process, another organization called CETUSA (Council on Educational Travel) was used.

As a result of wilfully failing to report job injuries for four years, Exel was fined nearly $300,000 by the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration in February 2012.

Earlier this year, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued Exel for failing to promote a female associate to a supervisory position on behalf of Contrice Travis.
“Travis’s former supervisor testified that when he recommended Travis for the position, the general manager informed him that he would never hire a woman for the position.”, during the four-day trial in Atlanta, Georgia.

Travis was awarded compensatory damages of $25,000 and punitive damages of $475,000 plus back pay by the jury in the case.

Excel Basics

We suggest familiarizing yourself with a few basic Excel commands if you’re just getting started. The following are examples:

The process of creating a new spreadsheet from scratch.

The ability to perform basic computations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Titles and text for columns should be written and formatted.

Filling out forms automatically in Excel.

The ability to add or delete a single column, row, or spreadsheet.

You can see what data you’re filling in a spreadsheet as you scroll past the columns and rows.

Data should be sorted alphabetically.

Taking a closer look at a few of these will be helpful.

What is the significance of auto-fill, for instance?

There’s a good chance you already know this quick trick if you are familiar with Excel. But to cover all bases, let me demonstrate autofill’s glory. Several types of data can be quickly filled into adjacent cells, including values, series, and formulas.

Excel Formulas

Making sense of your data can be challenging when you have so many Excel formulas to choose from. To simplify your learning path, here are some formulas you can use to carry out some complex tasks in Excel.

  • Before creating any formula, you must write an equal sign (=) in the cell where you wish to display the result.
  • Use the + sign to add the values of two or more cells. A simple example is =C5+D3.
  • You can subtract two or more cells’ values by using the – sign. Example: =C5-D3.
  • Multiplication: To multiply values in two or more cells, use the sign. Example: =C5D3.
  • Use the / symbol to divide the values of two or more cells. Example: =C5/D3.

In one cell, you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide using all of these formulas. Example: =(C5-D3)/((A5+B6)*3).

To prevent accidentally using PEMDAS order of operations for complex formulas, use parentheses around the expressions. Formulas can be written using plain numbers.

In Excel, you can simply multiply the number by 1 + the percentage increase to calculate a percentage increase (i.e. increase a number by a specified percentage).

If you want to increase 50 by 20% in Excel, enter the following formula into any Excel cell:

=( 1 + 20% ) * 50

This gives a result of 60.

This formula contains the following information:

  • By using the % operator, Excel divides the preceding number by 100. As a result, 20% is evaluated as 0.2 in the above calculation;
  • Calculation relies heavily on brackets.

Spreadspeed values can be used in the percentage increase calculation, as with any Excel formula. Below you can see this.

 Formula:

A B
1 Original Value: 50
2 Original Value Increased by 20%: =(1 + 20%) * B1

 Result:

A B
1 Original Value: 50
2 Original Value Increased by 20%: 60

Percentage method to reduce a number

You can reduce a number by a certain percentage by multiplying it by 1 minus the percentage reduction.

You can reduce, for example, 50 by 20% in Excel by typing the following formula in each Excel cell:

=(1 – 20%) * 50

As a result, 40 is obtained.

The spreadsheet below shows this information.

 Formula:

A B
1 Original Value: 50
2 Original Value decreased by 20%: =(1 – 20%) * B1

 Result:

A B
1 Original Value: 50
2 Original Value decreased by 20%: 40

Examples of further percent increases/decreases

Here is an example of how to calculate sales tax

The following spreadsheet shows the amount of sales tax added to an invoice at 22.5% in column B2.

 Formula:

A B
1 Invoice Total (before tax): 1240
2 Invoice Total (after 22.5% sales tax): =(1 + 22.5%) * B1

 Result:

A B
1 Invoice Total (before tax): 1240
2 Invoice Total (after 22.5% sales tax): 1519

Discount Example 2

In a shop, goods are offered at a 15% discount to their original price during a sale. This spreadsheet calculates the new price after the discount has been applied to several items:

 Formulas:

A B
1 Original
Price
Price After
15% Discount
2 $75.00 =(1 – 15%) * A2
3 $100.00 =(1 – 15%) * A3
4 $125.00 =(1 – 15%) * A4
5 $150.00 =(1 – 15%) * A5

 Results:

A B
1 Original
Price
Price After
15% Discount
2 $75.00 $63.75
3 $100.00 $85.00
4 $125.00 $106.25
5 $150.00 $127.50
