Hi, welcome to solsarin site, today we want to talk about“how often do you feed goldfish?“,

thank you for choosing us.

how often do you feed goldfish?

The general rule to follow is that you should feed your goldfish 2 or 3 times per day. This is a simplified average that will work fine in most situations.

You should try to keep the feeding times consistent each day as well. This will help your goldfish develop a regular pattern and aid their digestive cycle.

Feeding them at random times throughout the day will increase the chance of them getting sick or not getting a consistent amount of food.

But even though the guidelines above make things easy, you shouldn’t be afraid to vary your plan a bit when needed. This is something that comes with experience.

For example, you might find that your goldfish doesn’t eat as much as it gets older. In this situation, it might be smart for you to try decreasing the number of times you feed them each day from three down to two (always measure the amount of food you’re giving them to be sure you’re not reducing their intake too drastically).

We always advocate owners to stick to care guidelines when they’re beginners but exercise common sense as they become more experienced.

What Do Goldfish Eat?

Many people have only seen goldfish in a domesticated setting or within a tank, so it’s hard to imagine them in the wild. But in reality, goldfish thrive while in nature due to the variety of food that they consume.

They’re actually omnivores, so they like to have a bit of both plants and animals. In the wild, goldfish can eat plants, insects, crustaceans, and even smaller fish if they’re particularly large.

As far as plants go, they like to consume algae, as well as plant roots and leaves. For the animal portion of their diet, they prefer to eat small fish, snails, and larvae. They get a little bit of everything on their plate!

For domesticated goldfish, it’s best to mimic what they eat in the wild to make them as healthy and happy as possible. Luckily, you don’t have to go swimming in your local lake to catch some small fish or snails for their next meal.

Many goldfish eat goldfish flakes, pellets, brine shrimp, bloodworms, and even small boiled vegetables, like peas, all of which are easily found in the market today. The flakes and pellets that are designed for goldfish are packed full with the nutrients they need in a flavor that appeals to them.

A combination of ‘indoor’ and ‘outdoor’ food, or food that domesticated goldfish eat vs. what they eat in the wild, is the best form of nutrition for these beautiful fish.

How much should I feed my goldfish?

The best way to determine how much food your goldfish should consume is to only feed them the amount of food they can eat during the course of a 2-3 minute period. Monitor how much food you distribute during this time, and remove any excess food from their tank by siphoning it out with a gravel vacuum.

To make yours and your goldfish’s life easier it is a good idea to pay close attention to how much food they eat when you perform this first trial run. That way you don’t have to waste your money on uneaten food, and you won’t harm your fish by letting them over-eat their required amount.

Factors affecting how often to feed goldfish

In the vast majority of cases, we recommend following our advice to feed adult goldfish once per day. However, there are a few reasons you might want to adjust this:

  • The age of the goldfish
  • The temperature of the water
  • Whether you’re attempting to breed your goldfish
  • The number of fish in the tank or pond
  • Your own routine

Age of the Fish

Young fish need several frequent meals per day, as a goldfish grows the fastest in the first year of its life. Several small meals throughout the day promote more growth than one big one.

Spawning

If you are trying to get your fish to spawn, it is usually necessary to put them into “breeding condition” by feeding them several larger meals per day (this is accompanied by a more intense water change schedule).  The greater amounts of food help the fish to produce more eggs and milt.

Growth

Are you trying to promote lots of growth in your fish? Maybe you want to see them get huge? In that case, more frequent feedings in smaller amounts are the way to go.

Temperature

During the wintertime outdoors when the temperature drops below 50 degrees F, many times goldfish only need to be fed once per month.  Hibernating goldfish hardly digest food as their metabolism slows down, and the food can end up just rotting in their gut and leading to sickness.

Water Volume (Stocking)

How often to feed goldfish is also influenced by the water available to dilute toxins produced by excess nutrients. In a more crowded environment or one where there is not as much water volume to dilute the fish waste, sometimes a twice a week feeding is a good idea to prevent the water from getting fouled.

Feeding Goldfish with Pellets

Planning on using pellets as your pet’ staple diet? It is best to aim for 2 to 3 pellets around twice per day.

Since goldfish food pellets tend to sink to the tank’s bottom, it might take them more than 2 minutes to spot their food and eat it.

So, the 2-minute feeding rule may not be the perfect solution for goldfish food sinking pellets.

You may apply the 2-minute feeding rule, however, if you are using floating fish food pellets. I also use 2 to 3 pellets, when it comes to the floating option.

Feeding Goldfish with Flakes

The 2-minute rule is also perfect for goldfish that eat flakes. Fish owners that feed their pets with flakes have the tendency to overfeed.

After all, the small amount of flake food does not look a lot and may seem not enough.

But, believe me, it is what your goldfish exactly needs.

For flake users, another crucial rule to follow is to feed your goldfish 2 to 3 times per day with a food amount that is as big as the eye of your goldfish.

It is basically a rough estimate of the right amount of flakes to feed them.

So, if you are not sure how much to feed them, just take a look at their eyes, and try to match the amount of food to feed them.

Peas: The Perfect Veggie Goldfish Food

Fish, like humans, want a little variety for their diet. From time to time, I feed my goldfish with small and skinless peas.

Goldfish surely love plants and vegetables, and peas are incredibly healthy, tasty, and nutritious for them.

Plus, they are small enough to fit conveniently in the goldfish’s mouth.

Peas are so beneficial and valuable for goldfish in an array of ways. For one, they sink quickly to the aquarium’s bottom, meaning goldfish will not have to gulp some air, as they eat, helping prevent any digestive problem.

Most of my adult goldfish can eat around 2 to 3 peas each. Smaller fish, meanwhile, can consume 1 or 2.

If your fish is healthy and has no problems in buoyancy, it is ideal to follow this ratio to prevent excessive buildup of fiber.

How often to feed goldfish at different ages?

we recommend feeding younger goldfish (by that, we mean fish that are less than one year old), more often than adult goldfish.

Rather than once per day, we recommend feeding young goldfish at least two, possibly three times per day.

This is because more frequent meals will promote healthy growth.

It’s important to only feed very small amounts though. A small pinch of food is enough.

Understanding Goldfish Anatomy

Identify the location of your goldfish’s teeth. Goldfish do not have teeth in their jaws. Their teeth are located in the back of their throat, which allows them to crush food and swallow food whole. If you listen closely enough, you may actually be able to hear a crunching noise from your goldfish’s teeth as he chews on his food.

Learn about your goldfish’s digestive system. Goldfish do not have stomachs. Instead, your goldfish’s intestines do the digestive work that a stomach would normally do. In addition, the lack of a stomach means that your goldfish cannot eat much food at a time; the food that he can eat will move quickly through his digestive system. The lack of a stomach makes your goldfish more susceptible to digestive problems if he is not fed properly.
Learn about the purpose of your goldfish’s swim bladder. Your goldfish’s swim bladder is an internal gas-filled organ that allows him to stay buoyant in the water. If not fed the proper diet, your goldfish can develop problems with his swim bladder, which means that he would not be able to easily stay afloat in the water.

How Long Can Goldfish Go Without Food?

You may be planning to go for a vacation or travel away to see your loved ones in another part of the country, and you are worried about the welfare of your goldfish.

If you are travelling for less than two weeks, then you should not worry at all. This is because goldfish can go for up to 14 days without food and still be okay.

In case you are travelling for a more extended period than 14 days then you should ask your friend or neighbor to look after your goldfish or at least ensure that the fish is adequately fed.

Not everyone owns a goldfish or knows about goldfish feeding, so try to give the person as much information as possible. You can tell him/her about the foods to use, the times to feed and probably how to clean the water tank.

Why Goldfish Not Eating?

Goldfish are always hungry and they can eat as much as you feed them. However, if they don’t want to eat, you should pay attention, because there could be some problem going on.
