Kevin Joseph Aloysius “Chuck” Connors (April 10, 1921 – November 10, 1992) was an American actor, writer, and professional basketball and baseball player. He is one of only 13 athletes in the history of American professional sports to have played in both Major League Baseball (Brooklyn Dodgers 1949, Chicago Cubs, 1951) and the National Basketball Association (Boston Celtics 1947–48). With a 40-year film and television career, he is best known for his five-year role as Lucas McCain in the highly rated ABC series The Rifleman (1958–63).

Jeff loved to share stories about his father. He was a guest at the 2014 Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention. There, he shared stories about he and his brothers going on the set of where The Rifleman was being filmed (which is now CBS studios in North Hollywood) and watch as the episodes were being filmed. One thing Jeff really remembered was his dad saying: “Jeffrey, its all about the fans. If you don’t have your fans, you don’t have anything.” For that reason, he never rejected an offer to attend a convention or film festival and talk about Chuck Connors.

Chuck Connors (1921-1992) is most remembered as Lucas McCain, The Rifleman. However, there are many more chapters to his story. Chuck
was not only a fine actor, but a wonderful athlete and a generous man who organized or participated in multiple charitable events. He had a larger-
than-life personality, outgoing and outspoken, but also compassionate and loyal to his friends.
Chuck‘s career included playing professional baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Chicago Cubs and the Montreal Royals as well as the Pacific Coast League Los Angeles Angels. He was also a Boston Celtic in the first year of the Professional Basketball Association and had the dubious distinction of being the first player to shatter a glass backboard.

Although The Rifleman brought Chuck fame, he had already started building a solid career in the entertainment industry. He played bad guys and good guys, cowards and heroes with equal ease. He worked with many Hollywood legends and he rode tall in the saddle in many westerns and fought in the trenches in many war movies. From his childhood in Brooklyn, New York, to his careers in both basketball and baseball, to his entry into Hollywood, Chuck used his natural talents to carve out a life story worth telling. BIOGRAPHY
Imposing, lantern-jawed leading man of TV, most famous as Lucas McCain, the righteous, chain-smoking protagonist of ABC-TV’s immensely popular “The Rifleman” (1958-63). Connors’ six-foot-five frame helped him gain a position as a pro basketball player on the Boston Celtics after a stint in the military during WWII. He soon switched to baseball, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs, but he was more distinguished for his comical sideline antics than his baseball prowess. Demoted to the Cubs’ minor league farm, the old Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, Connors took advantage of his new location to begin an acting career, appearing in at least a dozen features before his star-making TV role.
“The Rifleman” featured the athlete-turned-actor as New Mexico homesteader Lucas McCain, a diligent single father whose child-rearing duties were enlivened by gun battles with ornery varmints whom he dispatched with his trusty modified Winchester rifle. Several notable directors of genre features–Sam Peckinpah, Budd Boetticher, Joseph H. Lewis, Ida Lupino–toiled on this landmark TV Western.
Arrest and Trial
Connors’s subsequent series included the cop/attorney drama “Arrest and Trial” (1963-64), opposite Ben Gazzara; the Westerns “Branded” (1965-66) and “Cowboy in Africa” (1967-68), the syndicated documentary “The Thrill Seekers” (1973), which he hosted and narrated; “The Yellow Rose” (1983-84), and the short-lived “Werewolf” (1987). TV movies include “The Police Story” (the 1973 pilot movie for the popular TV series), “The Horror at 37,000 Feet” (1973), “Banjo Hackett: Roamin’ Free” (1976) and “Roots” (1977).
Connors contemplated entering politics, but found politicians even more ornery than his old sagebrush adversaries. In 1973, at a party at President Nixon’s vacation home, he met an unlikely fan–Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, who greeted his favorite actor with a big Russian bear hug. Connors presented Brezhnev with two six-guns. He was also on hand to honor his actor-turned-President friend on a 1985 CBS special entitled “An All-Star Party For ‘Dutch’ Reagan.”
1942
In October 1942 Connors enlisted in the Army, where he spent the next three years state-side as a tank training instructor while the United States fought World War II. After his initial assignment to Camp Campbell in Kentucky, Connors was assigned to West Point, 50 miles north of his native Brooklyn. On weekends during the warm weather, Connors played semi-pro baseball in the New York City area, often with the Bushwick team in Brooklyn. During the colder months, he played pro basketball in the American Basketball League for the Brooklyn Indians (1943-44), Wilmington Bombers (1944-45), and Paterson Crescents (1945-46).
Connors became more of a scorer during his wartime basketball years, averaging 6.1 points per game in 27 games for Wilmington and 8.8 points per game in 18 games for Paterson. During the war years, Connors concluded that he could make a decent living postwar as a year-round professional athlete, playing baseball from spring until fall and basketball during the winter. His plan was not all that unusual for the time period, because many athletes played multiple professional sports in the 1930s and 1940s.

In the war years, Connors also acquired the nickname “Chuck,” which soon usurped his given name Kevin. The oft-told story that the nickname originated from his Seton Hall days, where first-baseman Connors was fond of saying to his infielders, “Chuck it to me, baby. Chuck it to me!” is likely apocryphal.7 This story was told by his sister Gloria, in a 1997 biography of Connors. More probable is the explanation that Connors gave in the early 1980s: “They called me Chuck when I started playing baseball because they thought Kevin was effeminate.”8

Since its first published instance was in 1945, the nickname came from his days in semi-pro baseball.9 In 1949 the Brooklyn Eagle reported that Connors was called Chuck “after the old Bowery character of the same name,” which makes sense since Connors played semi-pro baseball mostly in the New York City area.10 The original Chuck Connors, a talkative, shadowy character that was a political boss, was immortalized in the 1933 movie The Bowery, where Wallace Beery played tough-guy Connors in the rough-and-tumble world of the Lower East Side.11 Chuck was the perfect nickname for a hard-nosed baseball player.
