Halloween

Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of “All Hallows’ evening”), less commonly known as Allhalloween All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve, is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows’ Day. It begins the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the departed.

One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots. Some go further and suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow’s Day, along with its eve, by the early Church.

Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow’s Day. Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish migrants brought many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century, and then through American influence, Halloween spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century.

Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror or Halloween-themed films.

For some people, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows’ Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although it is a secular celebration for others. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows’ Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

Krispy Kreme

Krispy Kreme, Inc. (previously Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc.) is an American multinational doughnut company and coffeehouse chain. Krispy Kreme was founded by Vernon Rudolph (1915–1973), who bought a yeast-raised recipe from a New Orleans chef, rented a building in 1937 in what is now historic Old Salem in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and began selling to local grocery stores.

Steady growth preceded an ambitious expansion as a public company in the period 2000 to 2016, which ultimately proved unprofitable. In 2016, the company returned to private ownership under JAB Holding Company, a private Luxembourg-based firm. In July 2021, Krispy Kreme became publicly traded again on the Nasdaq.

Krispy Kreme Just Unveiled Its Halloween Donuts

Krispy Kreme isn’t scared of leaning into a pun. The donut shop will be doing that all month.

In the bold tradition of IHOb, Krispy Kreme is rechristening itself Krispy Skreme for the rest of October. There’s even a fresh logo to go with the new honorific. It’s the lead into its full embrace of the Halloween season, which involves rolling out four seasonally appropriate donuts that will be available through the end of the month.

There’s the Abra Cat Dabra, which is an Original Glazed donut that got dressed up for the holiday like a car. It’s dipped in chocolate icing and black sanding sugar. There’s also the Enchanted Cauldron donut, which is a Glazed Chocolate Cake donut topped with Kreme and made to look like a witch’s cauldron with sprinkles and pretzels.

The Bewitched Broomstick donut is an unglazed shell donut with an icing swirl and topped with green buttercream and a pretzel “broomstick.” Lastly, there’s the Spooky Sprinkle, which is an Original Glazed dipped in orange icing and topped off with “a Halloween sprinkle blend.”

On top of the themed breakfast dessert, you can snag a dozen donuts for $1 every Saturday starting on October 16. You can also pick up a totally free donut on Halloween if you swing by a Krispy Kreme in a costume. (That’s in addition to its ongoing promotion where you can get a free donut every day if you’re vaccinated against COVID-19.) Halloween is a lot of fun any year, but if you add some donuts throughout the month, you can ride the Halloween sugar high all the way to November.

Krispy Kreme Is Handing Out Free Donuts on Halloween

Halloween might be about creative costumes, giant yard skeletons, and living a spooky life for a bit. But it’s also about grabbing a free treat every time someone opens a door.

Krispy Kreme understands how to celebrate the holiday. Not only does the donut shop have themed donuts for Halloween, but it’s also doling out free treats. If you show up in a costume, you can get a totally free donut. You don’t have to buy anything or do anything other than show off your spooky duds.

Outside of that freebie, you can scoop up a quartet of Halloween-themed donuts. There’s the Abra Cat Dabra, which is an Original Glazed donut dipped in chocolate icing and black sanding sugar to look like a cat. Then there’s the Enchanted Cauldron donut, which is a Glazed Chocolate Cake donut topped with Kreme and made to look like a witch’s cauldron with sprinkles and pretzels.

You don’t have to wait until it’s dark out to start grabbing some sweets. That sugar high can last all day if that’s how you’re looking to spend the best holiday of the year.

A Look at Krispy Kreme’s 2021 Halloween Donuts

Each year, Krispy Kreme trots out a number of Halloween-themed donuts and 2021 is no different. This year sees four Halloween donuts from Krispy Kreme: the Abra Cat Dabra Donut, Enchanted Cauldron Donut, Bewitched Broomstick Donut, and Spooky Sprinkle Donut. Three of which embody a witch theme.

The Halloween Dozen comes in a special themed “Spellbook” box and goes for $16.99 in my area, but I received these courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

There’s not much in the way of new flavors in this year’s batch of Halloween donuts but they’re pretty nice to look at.

The Abra Cat Dabra Donut take the chain’s normal Chocolate Iced Glazed Donut and gives you some extra crunch and sweetness from the sanding sugar and fondant eyes.

The Enchanted Cauldron Donut gives you a regular Glazed Chocolate Cake donut, which is actually not too sweet on it’s own and has a fairly deep chocolaty flavor, and adds on lots of whipped cream-like Kreme. The plain Kreme isn’t super sweet but it adds up. It’s also a lot of food coloring so you might want to check your teeth and tongue after eating (and your clothes and skin if you’re a messy eater). The pretzel “broomstick” was, unfortunately, very stale.

The Bewitched Broomstick Donut is a shell donut filled with Kreme, dipped in purple icing, decorated with a orange-colored icing swirl and gold stars, and finished with a “broomstick” with green buttercream “bristles” and a pretzel stick “handle.” Basically, it’s a Kreme-filled donut with extra icing and, for me at least, a slight crunch from a stale pretzel stick.

The Spooky Sprinkle Donut is the plainest of the bunch as it’s a regular sprinkle donut but in different colors for Halloween and only half the sprinkles.

The box is a nice touch. The design is oriented vertically so that it opens like a book and has a window to see the donuts inside.

Out of the four donuts, my favorite in terms of both looks and taste is the Enchanted Cauldron Donut. Just mind the food coloring.

KRISPY KREME’S NEW HALLOWEEN DOUGHNUTS ARE SO CUTE IT’S SCARY

Krispy Kreme is getting spooky again with a new Halloween Collection full of festive bites. Starting on Monday, Oct. 11, the North Carolina-based chain is offering four doughnuts for the Halloween season as the store is transformed into “Krispy Skreme.” You won’t want to wait to grab Krispy Kreme’s Halloween doughnuts for 2021 because the lineup is a whole witchy vibe.

With All Hallow’s Eve approaching fast, Krispy Kreme unveiled its new Halloween Collection and a new “Krispy Skreme” logo for spooky season. Featuring four witch-inspired bites with adorable icing and sprinkles, you won’t feel scared of some spell-casting when you order these treats. Each doughnut in the lineup includes clever additions like pretzel sticks, sugar fondant, Halloween sprinkles, and piping work, the bites will put the treat in trick-or-treating.

First is the Abra Cat Dabra Doughnut, which is inspired by a black cat (aka a witch’s fave familiar). Featuring an Original Glazed doughnut dipped in chocolate icing, the design comes to life with a black sanding sugar-coating, white icing ears and purple whiskers, and green sugar fondant eyes.

The Enchanted Cauldron Doughnut is an Instagram-worthy bite that’s almost too cool to eat. With a Glazed Chocolate Cake doughnut base, the treat is topped with some Kreme and really looks like a witch’s cauldron, thanks to its shades of green and black, sprinkles, and pretzel “broomstick.”

Continuing the witchy aesthetic is the Bewitched Broomstick Doughnut, an unglazed shell doughnut dipped in purple icing with a swirl of orange icing and topped with edible gold stars. The pièce de résistance is the pretzel “broomstick” with green buttercream broom bristles.

Last but not least, the Spooky Sprinkle Doughnut is an Original Glazed doughnut dipped in orange icing and topped with green, orange, black, and purple Halloween sprinkles on one half. Although it isn’t specifically witchy, it still fits into the whole aesthetic.

You can get Krispy Kreme’s Halloween Collection in a special edition Spellbook Dozen box or buy a single doughnut.

To celebrate the new Halloween Collection, the brand is offering a special BOGO deal. Every Saturday from Oct. 16 through Oct. 30, you can get the “Saturday Scary Sharies” deal at Krispy Skreme and score a $1 dozen with the purchase of any dozen. Plus, each dozen will come in the special Spellbook Dozen box while supplies last.

And that’s not the only deal Krispy Skreme is serving up. If you head into a Krispy Kreme store near you in your Halloween costume on Oct. 31, you’ll get a free doughnut, whether you make a purchase or not.

When heading to Krispy Kreme to get the new Halloween Doughnuts, make sure to check the CDC guidelines for the most updated health rules.
