Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “most donut shops per capita“.

List of doughnut shops

Doughnut shops (also spelled donut shops) specialize in the preparation and retail sales of doughnuts. A doughnut is a type of fried dough confectionery or dessert food. The doughnut is popular in many countries and prepared in various forms as a sweet snack that can be homemade or purchased in bakeries, supermarkets, food stalls, and franchised specialty outlets. They are usually deep-fried from a flour dough, and typically either ring-shaped or without a hole and often filled.

Which Country Has The Most Donut Shops Per Capita?

Canada has the highest number of donut shops per capita in the world followed by Japan. Canada has about five times more donut shops per capita than the United States. The industry started expanding during the early 1990s when various franchise chains started opening branches all over the country.

Tim Horton’s Inc

Tim Horton’s is a Canadian fast food café chain that is famous for its donuts and coffee. Tim Horton’s is the biggest Canadian quick-service franchise that has 4,846 restaurants in 14 nations. Tim Horton’s had 4,592 restaurants in Canada and 807 in the U.S. by 2013. Jim Charade and Tim Horton (a Canadian hockey player) founded the business in 1964. Horton’s partnered with Ron Joyce in 1967. Ron took over the company after Horton died and expanded it into a multimillion-dollar franchise. Tim Horton’s accounted for over 55% of the donut shops in Canada by 1994. Currently, Tim Horton’s is a subsidiary of Restaurant Brands International.

Country Style

Country Style is one of the oldest donut shop franchise in Canada. It was started in 1962. It is a chain of coffee shops that operate mainly in Ontario. Country Style opened about 100 shops within the first two decades of its existence, and by 1974 it was the leading donut and coffee establishment in Canada. Poor performance forced Country Style to close its stores in the western and eastern parts of Canada during the early 1980s. MTY Food Group owns country Style. MTY Food Group purchased Mr. Sub and merged it with Country Style on November 1, 2011. Country Style is the third biggest donut chain in Canada right behind Starbucks and Tim Horton. Country Style owns over 400 donut shops in Canada alone.

Robin’s Donuts

Robin’s Donuts is a chain of fast-food cafés that operate in all the Canadian provinces except Quebec. Robin’s has over 160 outlets, and it was ranked as the seventh best coffee chain in the country by the Maclean’s Magazine Poll in 2017. George Spicer and Harvey Cardwell started Robin’s Donuts in Thunder Bay in 1975. Chairman’s Brand Corporation took over Robin’s Donuts in 2016 after they bought the Afton Food Group, a firm which owned 241 Pizza and Robin’s Donuts.

TOP DONUT CITIES

When BestPlaces Founder and President Bert Sperling visited Austin, Texas on business last year, he thought to himself “There seem to be a lot of donut shops here.” Austin is known for its music scene, cultivated “weirdness,” and legendary barbecue, and while the Texas capital delivered in these expected areas he couldn’t shake the feeling that Austin might also be a donut town.

With that running around his head, “The Guru of Lists” found his next project – a list of the “Top Donut Cities” in the United States. But since BestPlaces is founded on hard data, it was a bit early to name Austin “Donut City, USA” simply because he walked past a handful of pastry purveyors on Rainey and 6th Street.

A methodology for the study soon became clear. The study would be limited to the Top 100 Metro Areas in terms of population, since roughly two-thirds of the nation’s population live in those cities. Then, these metropoli would be ranked in order of number of donut shops per capita. The per capita calculation is important in lists of this type, because if it were simply the TOTAL number donut shops, the largest cities would top the rankings, with no deference to density or frequency.

Number were crunched and results crystallized like the sugary coating on a Raised Glazed. While Austin had more donut shops per capita than Sperling’s home base of Portland, he was surprised when it failed to crack the top ten. But it was clear that one region in the United States reigned supreme in their affinity for donuts.

Top Ten Donut Cities

Here are the “Top Ten Donut Cities” in the United States. Oh, and we were sure to include both “donut” and “doughnut” shops.

New England is Donut Country

New England dominated the study, with the top seven cities being located in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, or Connecticut. Providence took the crown, with a whopping 23.25 donut shops per 100K residents.

Mega-chain Dunkin Donuts was founded in the Boston-area burg of Quincy in 1930, so it’s not a complete surprise that the New England region has a high density of donut shops.

Southern California

Bert was also recently in Los Angeles and was struck by the number of donut establishments there too. Did The City of Angels also have a thing for fried pastries?

The numbers show that Southern California does indeed love donuts. It’s not enough to crack our top ten, but the metros of LA, Oxnard/Ventura, and Riverside all make the top twenty.

And it’s got Randy’s Donuts, one of America’s iconic buildings. How many donut shops can you recognize from your airline seat?

Canada has the most donut shops per capita in the world

If Canadians love their donuts this much, just imagine how much Canadian cops must enjoy those deep-fried dough balls! Canada has the highest number of donut shops per capita in the world, edging out second-place Japan by quite a wide margin. To put just how many donut shops Canada has into perspective, it has 5 times as many donut shops per capita than its neighbor to the south, the United States of America. Tim Hortons alone has almost 5000 restaurants across Canada, over 10 times the amount of donut shops as Country Style, which also contributes to the number.
