reba mcentire divorce

The last two years have been bittersweet for Reba McEntire. The singer continues to see great career success despite having been in the business for more than 40 years, but she has struggled to see her 26-year marriage come to an end.

In August of 2015, Reba and her long-time manager and husband, Narvel Blackstock, announced the end of their marriage. The divorce was finalized in October and McEntire admits in a new interview that she has questioned why God allowed this to happen to her, but her faith and a strong support system have helped her cope.

I have a long list and so many questions for God. Why did this happen? And how did you allow that?” she says. “Over the last two years I’ve been going through a divorce. God’s way is the best way. And it seems to me that Narvel is happier and I’m in a really good state of mind. It’s taken me this time to pull through why and how. And there’s been a lot between us and I believe that to forgive is easier than forget.”

“I can never forget some of what he did,” Reba admits. “But going on with life is what’s really important. And my faith helped me with that. I think about what God wants me to do. I focus on that. Faith is really important. It keeps me sane and it keeps me hopeful.”

McEntire hasn’t publicly addressed the reason behind the end of her marriage, but told CMT’s Cody Alan that the divorce wasn’t her idea.

“The divorce was not my idea,” Reba admitted. “I didn’t want it in any shape, form or fashion. It was really hard to make the adjustment when someone’s not happy. I just want everybody to be happy in their lives because our lives are too short to be miserable. I just thought it was the best thing to take my marbles and go play somewhere else, is what Daddy used to always say.”

McEntire recently released a new single, “Just Like Them Horses,” an emotional tribute to her late father.  She is also in the middle of a Las Vegas residency with Brooks & Dunn and admits that she is having the time of her life.

Narvel Blackstock and Reba McEntire

As is common to career people, Narvel Blackstock and Reba McEntire met at work. Reba McEntire started her career with her siblings, “The Singing McEntires.” The trio would be seen performing at rodeos where their father was playing. The group would later separate, but Reba continued her career as a solo act.

Reba married her first husband, Charlie Battles, in 1976. Battles was a steer wrestling champion and a rancher. Battle and Reba would later move to Oklahoma, where they would own a ranch. Battle was a decade older than Reba, and their marriage bore fruit two children. Reba was 21 when she married Battles.

When Battles decided to divorce his wife, Reba was devastated, shocked, and even disillusioned with what had happened. Reba’s break-up with Battle happened when her career was soaring and was gaining much attention. Reba, however, stated that the reason for her and Battles’ break up was her decision to prioritize her career over her marriage. She ended her 11-year marriage with Battles in 1987.

Narvel Blackstock and Reba McEntire

After all the divorce hullabaloo, Narvel Blackstock came into the scene. He and Reba had a whirlwind romance. Because of her immediate relationship with Blackstock following a divorce, Reba’s reputation was really criticized by her fans. People said that Reba’s divorce was an incongruous behavior. This was due to the fact that Reba built her early career as a “home-sweet-home” kind of image. Yet, despite all the criticisms, this didn’t stop Reba from marrying Narvel in 1988 in Lake Tahoe, California. The couple welcomed a child in 1990 whom they named, Shelby McEntire Blackstock.

Through-out the years, Narvel Blackstock and Reba McEntire had worked hand-in-hand as partners in the industry and as a couple. Narvel didn’t make a big splash in the country music scene prior to his relationship with Reba. When he married Reba, he started to manage Reba’s career and produced several hits and award-winning songs for Reba. Besides Reba, Narvel also managed some good talents such as Secret of Giving, Malibu Country, and Not So Family Christmas. Reba McEntire and Blackstock also built a company popularly known as Starstruck Entertainment.

Reba McEntire didn’t want divorce from Narvel Blackstock at first

After the couple’s divorce was finalized, McEntire revealed that it wasn’t her choice, as reported by HuffPost.

“The divorce was not my idea. I didn’t want it in any shape, form or fashion,” the “Fancy” singer told CMT. “So it was really hard to make the adjustment when someone’s not happy. I just want everybody to be happy in their lives, because our lives are too short to be miserable.”

McEntire noted that her faith helped her through the seeming upheaval.

“The thing that got me through this change in life, is number one, God,” she said. “I prayed every day to help me have the strength to move one foot in front of the other, and continue on with what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Divorce

In 1976, McEntire married steer wrestling champion and rancher Charlie Battles. The couple owned a ranch in Oklahoma. But in 1987, just as McEntire’s musical career had begun to soar, the marriage collapsed. After their divorce, the singer moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to refocus on her music. In 1989, McEntire wed her manager, Narvel Blackstock, who already had three children from a previous marriage and 1990, the couple would welcome a son, Shelby McEntire Blackstock, into their blended family.  2015, after 26 years together, the couple announced they were separating.

Reba McEntire and Her Boyfriend Rex Linn

Reba and Miami actor Rex started dating in January 2020. It first started with a dinner date and now we can’t get enough of the two lovebirds. Fans weren’t completely aware of their relationship until she mentioned it on the first season of her podcast. Now, it’s come full circle and Rex tells his side of how they made their relationship work during the pandemic on season 2’s first episode.

When telling fans about their contact-less relationship due to the pandemic, Reba and Rex explained that on March 16, 2020, they started “Coffee Camp” where they talk every morning (and they haven’t missed one yet!). “It was a very special relationship, us getting to know each other without any physical aspect to it at all,” Reba explained.

Rex also went the extra mile during that time to make sure Reba knew how much he cared about her. “Speaking of quarantine, I sent you food during quarantine a lot of times. I was trying to find a way to connect with you other than us three hours a day talking with one another, which was great and it allowed us to develop an emotional intimacy through those months and weeks. But I would send you food from all over the country cause I’m a foodie and you’re a foodie,” Rex proclaimed.

Along with talking about what inspired Rex to begin his acting career, the couple got personal with podcast listeners while explaining how they connected through the death of their mothers.

Many will be surprised to hear that the two knew each other well before they started calling each other “Tater Tot” and “Sugar Tot.” Rex describes how when his mother passed away in 1998, his sister lets him know there’s an important phone call that he needs to take. “So I went back in my old bedroom that I grew up in, sat on the bed and it was Reba.

And she said ‘I understand what you’re going through today. I just wanted to talk to you.’ We talked for about 25 minutes and I never forgot it. It was amazing and it was uplifting. It was really special and little did I know 20 years later, 21 years later, I’d be doing the same thing with her.. But I never forgot that.”

‘Reba’ was almost called ‘Sally’

True story! McEntire’s hit WB television show Reba almost had a different name. Actually, it almost had a completely different lead! McEntire tells country radio DJ Bobby Bones that the show was actually meant to star iconic actor Sally Field (hence the show’s name). When Field turned the project down, McEntire stepped in,

but producers wanted to keep the show’s (and her character’s) name the same; in fact, they even taped two versions of the pilot episode, one with her character’s name as Sally and one with her name as Reba.

It gets even wilder, though: During “upfronts” — when a network promotes its lineup — McEntire says the show was called Deep in the Heart, because it’s set in the Houston, Texas, area. It wasn’t until the very last minute that the show’s title was changed to Reba — and, really, thank goodness it was!
