Hello and welcome to solsarin. This post is about “slow cooker honey mustard chicken“.

Mustard (condiment)

Mustard is a condiment made from the seeds of a mustard plant (white/yellow mustard, Sinapis alba; brown mustard, Brassica juncea; or black mustard, Brassica nigra).

The whole, ground, cracked, or bruised mustard seeds are mixed with water, vinegar, lemon juice, wine, or other liquids, salt, and often other flavourings and spices, to create a paste or sauce ranging in colour from bright yellow to dark brown. The seed itself has a strong, pungent, and somewhat bitter taste. The taste of mustard condiments ranges from sweet to spicy.

Mustard is commonly paired with meats, vegetables and cheeses, especially as a condiment for sandwiches, hamburgers, corn dogs, and hot dogs. It is also used as an ingredient in many dressings, glazes, sauces, soups, and marinades. As a cream or as individual seeds, mustard is used as a condiment in the cuisine of India and Bangladesh, the Mediterranean, northern and southeastern Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa,[1] making it one of the most popular and widely used spices and condiments in the world.[2]

Slow cooker honey mustard chicken thighs

Use just a few ingredients to create this no-fuss slow-cooker chicken thigh dish with a creamy honey and mustard sauce. Kids will love it – and grown-ups, too

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • chicken thighs (or fillets if you prefer)
  • 8 spring onions, cut into lengths
  • 150ml chicken stock
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp double cream or crème fraîche
  • 100g frozen peas

  • STEP 1

Heat the slow cooker. Melt the butter in a frying pan and quickly brown the chicken thighs all over. Make sure the skin picks up plenty of colour. Season, then put them in the slow cooker. Brown the spring onions and add them to the slow cooker as well. Add the stock, mustard and honey and cook on low for 4 hrs.

  • STEP 2

Stir in the cream or crème fraîche and peas, then cook for a further 15 mins with the lid off. Re-crisp up the chicken skin under the grill, if you like.

Another recipe :

Recipe Ingredients

  • Chicken – boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • Honey – sweetens the dish
  • Mustard – standard yellow mustard
  • Butter – melted salted butter for butter makes everything better
  • Seasonings – garlic, salt, pepper, and oregano
  • Worcestershire sauce – this is the secret ingredient!
  • Heavy Cream – mellows out the sauce (Add this AFTER the cooking time is up)

Step-by-Step directions

  • Add the chicken breast to the bottom of your slow cooker.
  • In a small bowl combine the honey, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, melted butter, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Wait to add the heavy cream until the end of the cooking time.
  • Pour the honey mustard mixture over the chicken breasts.
  • Place the lid on the slow cooker. Cook on LOW for 6 hours.
  • When the cooking time is up, add the heavy cream.
  • Using 2 forks, shred the chicken right in the slow cooker. Stir until the cream and sauce have combined.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Can I use Dijon mustard such as Grey Poupon?

  • Dijon mustard is made with white wine (or wine vinegar) and can add a great flavor to this dish.
  • You can use Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard though I suggest only using 1/4 cup and using 1/4 cup standard yellow mustard as well.

How should I serve honey mustard chicken?

  • Over mashed potatoes
  • With steamed white rice or rice pilaf
  • On toasted hamburger buns

Can I use a different cut of chicken?

This recipe is very versatile! You can use any of these chicken cuts with great results. Anything with skin on it I would remove before serving.

  • Drumsticks
  • Bone-in or boneless chicken thighs
  • Chicken tenderlions
  • Whole Chicken (this will take additional time to cook, usually around 8 hours on low or until cooked through )

This recipe for honey mustard chicken has a great combination of sweet, savory and tangy flavors, all cooked wonderfully slow until the chicken is tender and fall-apart delicious. The addition of soy sauce adds a wonderful touch of savory umami flavor that balances well with honey, mustard and vinegar. Choose either boneless skinless chicken breasts or chicken thighs and you can use bone-in for more flavor. We love chicken thighs! 🙂 And you can serve this delicious slow cooker chicken recipe with your favorite rice, pasta or even in a sandwich. It’s delicious!

Prep:10 mins
Cook:4 hrs
Total:4 hrs 10 mins
Servings:4 servings
Yield:8 thighs

  • 2 to 2.5 pounds (910g-1140g) boneless skinless chicken breasts or chicken thighs
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) honey
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce (or Tamari for gluten free)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) mustard
  • 2 Tablespoons (30ml) malt vinegar (or distilled vinegar for gluten free)
  • 4 garlic cloves , mashed
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper , or to taste

    • 2 Tablespoons (30ml) cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons (30ml) water

    • In a 4 quart slow cooker, combine honey, soy sauce, mustard, malt vinegar, garlic and black pepper. Stir to combine all ingredients together well.

Add the chicken and press chicken down to cover it in as much sauce as possible.

    • Cook the chicken 4-5 hours on High or 6 hours on Low until the chicken is moist and tender.

Stir the chicken about 2 times, if possible, during the cooking and push the chicken down so it’s immersed in the sauce.

  • Optional: to thicken the sauce (do this about 1 hour before chicken is finished cooking). Make the corn starch slurry: mix cornstarch and cold water in small bowl. Stir the mixture so that all the cornstarch is completely dissolved, leaving no lumps.

Quickly stir in the cornstarch slurry into the crock pot teriyaki mixture and combine well so that the cornstarch doesn’t thicken and become lumpy. Finish cooking for the final hour.

  • Serve the hot and delicious chicken over rice, pasta or in a sandwich!

Is It Possible to Overcook Chicken in a Slow Cooker?

It is possible and a lot depends on whether you are cooking chicken breasts or thighs. Chicken breasts become dry when overcooked, while chicken thighs hold up much better and stay tender and juicy over a longer cooking period. It also depends on whether you want to shred the chicken or serve whole, intact pieces. Also, slow cooker temperatures vary, so check the chicken when the minimum time is up to be sure.

Should You Flip Chicken Over in a Slow Cooker?

Flipping isn’t necessary. The way a slow cooker cooks is similar to a pot on the stovetop. The food cooks in liquid and steam created by the slow cooker.

Should the Liquid Cover the Meat When Using a Slow Cooker?

Not necessarily. A slow cooker with a tight-fitting lid creates extra liquid from condensation as the food cooks. A large roast slow-cooked on the low setting will need less liquid than it would on the high setting. If your slow cooker tends to cook high and liquids evaporate, you may need to add more. Follow the recipe and keep an eye on your cooker.

  • For a lighter sauce, pour it into a fat separator before serving.
  • If the sauce is watery, make a cornstarch slurry with 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of water. Put the pot on high and add the slurry. Stir and cook for a few more minutes, or until the sauce is thickened.
  • If the sauce is too concentrated, try adding about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of cream to tone it down.

Timing is up to the cook—the dish can be ready in as little as 3 to 4 hours, or it may be cooked using the lower setting for up to 5 or 6 hours. If you want the chicken to be falling apart and shreddable, choose a longer length of time. If you want larger pieces, check it earlier.
