tattooing over a tattoo

As unfortunate as it is, Tattoo regrets happens for so many different reasons, whether it happens to be a long time after getting it done or immediately afterward. Maybe the design choice we made years ago doesn’t suit who we happen to be today, maybe the symbolism has become something that’s more haunting than anything else,

or maybe the elements and the years just haven’t been kind to the ink. Fortunately, that’s where a skilled tattoo artist can help with an incredible cover-up to transform the tattoo we no longer like into something we love, with no sign of the original tattoo remaining anywhere on our bodies. It’s like magic!

While it’s definitely an option to go the laser route and have the tattoo removed permanently, it’s also possible to find the right artist who will be willing to work with anyone experiencing tattoo regret to make the previous tattoo a new work of art. It’s incredible to see these transformations with nary a trace of the old work. Prepare to be blown away.

There are so many reasons to get a cover-up, and it’s good to know that the end result can look as amazing as the tattoos in these photos do.

Of course, it’s still important to carefully consider any new tattoo before making it a permanent addition to the body, but for when those moments of regret strike, there’s always a way to turn it into something even more beautiful.

What is a Cover-up Tattoo?

Covering up a tattoo follows a procedure where your previous and unwanted tattoo is replaced with a new one. In most cases, the method can do the job without breaking your bank.

You can also opt for a cover-up tattoo if your old design is fading. Light or faded tattoos are quite easy to work on using dark ink.

All you need is to pick an idea and schedule an appointment with your tattoo artist. The artist will further guide you which you should consider.

Moreover, the choice of a design to cover your old tattoo makes a significant difference as well. It is also likely that certain designs do not seem the best way to fix your problem.

How Does It Work?

You may think that applying a cover-up tattoo is simply a matter of ‘painting’ over the old one. But you’d be wrong in doing so.

This isn’t paint on a canvass. The ink is in your skin, and the new ink will mix with the old ink, thus creating a new color.

For ease, tattoo artists will often recommend black for the cover-up, as this is the color that most easily dominates another color. This is also why black is the hardest color to cover — it’s likely to show through the new ink.

If you aren’t a fan of black ink, the tattooist can use other dark colors or simply a darker shade of what you already have. If you have a very uneven-looking lime-green tattoo, it wouldn’t be too much trouble to cover it with forest green, for example.

The tattoo artist will need to discuss this with you, as certain colors can only be covered with certain other colors. You don’t have complete freedom in this aspect.

When it comes to the actual process, the tattooist will use tracing paper placed against your tattoo to highlight the predominant features of the old design. They will then place another piece of tracing paper over the top and begin work.

what factors do you need to consider?

Design of your Tattoo

When opting for a cover-up, take note that the design of your tattoo matters a lot. Not every design in easy to camouflage. For instance, tribal designs contain a slew of major or minor details which might get difficult to erase whereas a small tattoo with some symbol is quick to conceal. To avoid this hassle, try to choose a moderate tattoo design when going for a tattoo for the first time. So, you can get rid of it in less time if it would turn into a mistake.

Risk of Infection

After a tattoo, your body is fighting hard to heal and fight any infection from your open (tattoo) wound. So while your body art may look awesome on the outside, your inner body is probably craving a little time to rest and recoup in order to repair your damaged skin.1 How damaged your skin is obviously depends on the size of the tattoo, but it’s a good rule of thumb to wait until your tattoo has fully healed before you start on another.

Tattoo Size

The new or cover up design will always be bigger in size. There are possibilities that you will not get the size as per your choice. However, with the big portrait of a dainty tribal design,

you will have an opportunity to hide an unattractive design completely.

It would not be wrong to state that bigger designs allow you to go for drastic style and images. And, if you are still unsure about inking the large area of your skin,

do not hesitate to discuss it with your artist to find the top-notch design.

Illness

If you come down with the flu—or any other illness—quite frequently, or if you care for lots of small children, you’ll want to boost your immune system before opting for another tattoo.2

The infections that come into tattoos can become real nasty, real quick. They can even become life-or-limb-threatening if they aren’t treated promptly and professionally.

Old Tattoos are Easy to Cover

The age of your tattoo matters as well. It is evident that tattoos fade over time. This is possible because the ink of your tattoo is likely to break down as time passes. Red and yellow colors are prone to quick fading whereas shades like black and dark blue stay for an extended time period. Concealing a years old tattoo is less time-consuming as compared to a brand new one. And, old designs do not show through the cover-up a design like new ones do.

color

The darkest part of your cover up tattoo will need to be used to cover up the bulk of your old

tattoo, so keep that in mind. When the new ink for a cover up is added,

it doesn’t go over top of the ink from your old tattoo, it mixes with it to create a new color. Darker shades will overpower other colors here, so if you’re adding blue to red, for instance, or vice versa, it’s going to follow the laws of primary colors and make a purple shade. German emphasizes that “colours will be limited in range,

since lighter colours will show the existing tattoo through them”. If you’re going for the same colors in your new tattoo, then you’ll just need darker shades of the same colors for successful coverage.

If you’re covering up a black ink tattoo with another black ink design, the color won’t change, but your chosen design will need to be darkest and biggest in the area that’s over top of your original tattoo. Getting a cover up tattoo doesn’t mean you have to go for a black ink design, though. Artists can use all sorts of colors, shading, and blending to create a whole new tattoo that completely covers your old one.

How Long is That?

Depending on who you are, it could be a week or several months that you should wait before getting another tattoo. You need time to make a design and artist commitment while prepping your body for another session.

Some people are more impatient than others, and for those people, once your prior tattoo is in the final stages of healing and your artist is available, you’re set. But don’t get a new tattoo too quick—the more tattoos the body has to heal, the longer it’ll take to heal each individually.

Whatever you do and however long you wait, be sure you follow your artist’s aftercare instructions thoroughly to ensure your skin stays healthy and well. After all, you want to be proud to show off your new ink.

The Best Way To Cover Up Your Unwanted Tattoos

Tattoos are permanent, that is what makes them great, they last forever. Until you don’t want it anymore. Who knows, maybe it brings up bad memories or just isn’t your style anymore. Whatever the reason, you want to cut this lifetime commitment short.

Then, you are left with three options, keep the tattoo, remove the tattoo, or cover up the tattoo…

You can keep the unwanted tattoo, hiding it with stage makeup, clothing, or something else, and make sure your tattoo never sees the light of day.

You can remove the tattoo,  spending thousands and go through the long and painful process of tattoo removal. Or, if you are price conscious, you can remove the tattoo yourself “Gladiator” style cutting it out of your flesh with a nearby sharp rock (This method of tattoo removal is highly not recommended)

Or, you can choose in my opinion the best thing to do when you have a tattoo you do not like…..

Get a tattoo cover up, and turn that unwanted tattoo into a tattoo you will love the rest of your life.

Cover Up Your Unwanted Tattoos

You obviously like tattoos if you have one, so what better to do with that unwanted tattoo than to cover it up with some amazing new tattoo?! Like a phoenix rising from the ashes,
your new tattoo cover up will shine bright for all to see. It will symbolize the transformation from who you were when you got the original tattoo to what you have now become.

We all make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes happen to be tattoos that will stay on our bodies our whole lives. Point is, don’t beat yourself up about it,

there is something you can do to make that tattoo something that you want to have on you forever again.

Whether the tattoo you want to cover up is big or small, light or dark,

or anything in between, we can cover it up and make a tattoo that you want to show off.
