Santiago

March 12, 2021:

Santiago has been taking a break from class time, but will hopefully get back to work soon!

November 1, 2020:

Santiago participated in a 60 Day Ground Work Challenge this fall. The pace was fast for him, and he did well at some skills (yielding hindquarters/forequarters, sending over/by/past obstacles, tying prep) and he struggled with others (accepting the flag, trailer loading, vet prep). We will continue to work with him on all of these skills.

Santiago can be reactive at times, and can get overwhelmed while learning new skills if pushed too fast. Overall, we are happy with the progress he did make throughout the challenge.

September 1, 2020:

Santiago is now easier to catch and has enjoyed coming down the hill to participate in volunteer class!  He is working toward keeping focus on the task at hand and has made good progress with being responsive and respectful to his handler.

All of our horses are rescue horses, saved from a life of abuse and neglect, nursed back to health by devoted volunteers, and trained by talented professionals. After our comprehensive recovery and evaluation process, we can identify the horse’s temperament, health, and abilities.

Update June 26:

Santiago was evaluated a while back and found not to be saddle trained.

He is friendly but continues to have some stallion like behaviors. Adoption fee: $500

Santiago is a palomino and white overo gelding with blue eyes. His color and markings are stunning. He came in as a 15 year old stallion, so even after gelding he is still easily distracted by the ladies!

Santiago appears to be very athletic, but will need some time to become more sociable.

It took a few days to remind him about being caught and being respectful, but he is now on his way to polishing up what he already knows and learning something new. He is a sweet guy and will come along nicely in his groundwork.

Santiago a comfortable winner of Queen’s Vase

Santiago was the comfortable winner of the G2 Queen’s Vase over a mile and six furlongs, giving both trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore a fourth success of the meeting.

After delivering his challenge entering the final quarter mile, the son of Authorized quickened impressively for a decisive two and three-quarter length victory.

Aidan O’Brien said: “Santiago is a lovely, straightforward horse. He travels and stays well.

“We thought he was going to be an ideal St Leger [Doncaster, September 12] horse. We will give him another run in between.

“Santiago could be a Gold Cup horse next year, so we will keep that in our minds. He is a strong traveller and will get better from three to four. We have plenty of horses in the Derbys – the Irish Derby will come too soon and we will think about Epsom. But I think we will take our time with him this year.”

He was being kept in by Andrea [Atzeni, Defoe], but he hit the line very strong. It was a non-event for him really, but he ran a really good race.

“The plan was to come here and then have a look at the King George .

The master of Ballydoyle saddles Wichita and Arizona in tomorrow’s G1 St James’s Palace Stakes and provided an update on their wellbeing ahead of the mile showpiece. He revealed: “Both horses are good and seem to be well since the 2000 Guineas. They have done the same amount of work, they haven’t done an awful lot, but seem to be well.

WHAT COLOR IS YOUR HORSE?

what color is santiago’s red horse ?

There are five basic body colors of horses.

They are:

  • BROWN

  •  A brown horse has a mixture of blackand brown in his coat. In Europe, a “bay” is considered to be a brown horse.

  • BA

  •  A bay horse can be any shade of brown (which is a mixture of red and yellow), with points such as tail, mane, muzzle and lower legs being black. The brown can range from a light, almost tan or chestnut to a dark, seal color.

  • BLACK

  • A black horse is completely black, including muzzle and flanks. Most horses that look black are actually a very dark bay.

  • CHESTNUT

  •  A chestnut horse has brown skin and the hairs are actually red. The shades vary from a light yellowy color to dark liver. The mane and tail are usually the same color as the body but can be lighter. The lighter coloring is called flaxen. Lighter colored horses are called sorrel; very dark chestnut is called “liver chestnut”.

  • WHITE

  •  A truly white horse is born white and remains white. His hair is snowy; he has pink skin and blue eyes. Cream horses are a variation, also having unpigmented skin and pink or blue eyes, with a pale colored coat. Most “white horses” are actually light grey.

There are also three major color variations in horses and three major color breeds.

  • DUN
  • Duns have black skin with an evenly distributed coat color and a black mane and tail, similar to bay coloring. The coat color can range from a pale yellowish color to the color of a dirty canvas. Dun horses usually have a dorsal stripe down their backs and some have stripes on their forearms. The lighter shades are called buckskin.

  • GRAY

  • A gray coat is actually a mixture of black and white hairs on black skin.

  • APPALOOSA

  •  This is a color breed. It is divided into three color patterns:
  • Leopard is a white horse with dark spots all over his body;
  • Snowflake is a dark horse with tiny white spots;
  • and the “blanket”, the most well-known Appy pattern which usually consists of a white blanket with dark spots on the rump.Appys must meet three minimum requirements: striped hooves, unpigmented sclera (white around the cornea of the eye) and mottling of the skin, particularly on the nostrils, muzzle, and genitalia. There are solid colored appaloosas but they must meet the above requirements.

What does a brown horse look like?

Brown horses usually have lighter areas at the muzzle, flanks, and “arm pits”. It is not uncommon for a brown horse that is very dark to be mistaken for a black with a light muzzle. Brown horses foals often exhibit dorsal stripes and shoulder bars when they are born.

“You get away with some horses [running twice in quick succession] but most you don’t. We didn’t have much choice and our racing in Ireland only started last week so there was nothing we could do. We are delighted to have horses to run and you think their form will improve again once they have more time between races.”
