The devices and machines used for testing website and mobile apps are hosted in US, Ireland, and The Netherlands. You are automatically directed to the nearest location based on your IP. The servers are owned by reputable vendors. Each vendor has been thoroughly vetted, and each implement stringent security policies.

Servers are basically computers that offer workloads that are dedicated to specific tasks such as Web traffic handling, Real-Time Data Analysis and etc. They are located at certain data centers that a hosting providing either operates on its own or rents from. These data centers contains racks of machines that co-relate to produce hardware resource requirements of the installed operating systems in them and the applications on them.

How to Find Out Where Your Server is Located

When a website is hosted, it’s actually being stored on a server. Your hosting provider will likely have servers spread across the globe, but which server your website is located on is something you should be aware of.

No matter who your hosting provider is, the location of the server that your site is physically hosted on can have an effect on the delivery of your website. In turn, that can have an effect on your visitors and ranking.

In this article, we’ll talk you through why your server location matters and how you can find out where your server is located.

Why Does It Matter Where My Server Is Located?

The location of your server can have an effect on your website in a couple of ways. We’ll go over each of those ways now.

1. Server Location Can Have an Impact on Website Speed and Latency

No matter what type of website you have, it’s important to ensure that it loads fast. In short, if your server is far away, your website will be slower. The more distance there is between a domain visitor and the domain’s server, the longer it will take for data to be returned to the browser. That in itself can be detrimental to success.

Studies show that people will only wait for a couple of seconds for a website to load. Any longer than that and you’re likely to lose visitors — and potentially money.

For that reason, it’s important to ensure that your server is located close to your target audience. Doing that alone will ensure that your website loads faster, but there are other ways you can optimize your website to increase page speed, too.

2. The Location of the Server Can Affect SEO

You may think of SEO as just keywords and great titles, but there’s more to it than that. Your hosting server location can have an effect on SEO, too.

Hosting your website in the same location as your target audience can improve your SEO ranking tremendously. For example, you should have a U.S. IP address for a U.S. business.

Richard Baxter, the founder of Builtvisible.com, conducted his own test back in 2015 by changing his hosting server from his location, the UK, to a U.S server. By doing so, he noted a significant change in SEO ranking, with a drop in search results provided for the UK audience, but improving in the U.S.

So, by ensuring that your website is delivered from a server geographically close to your target audience, you can ensure that your customers are served as quickly as possible.

How Do I Find the Location of My Website’s Server?

Before you can find out where your server is located, you first need to find out what your website’s IP address is. The easiest way to do that is by using the command prompt (CMD), but there are also apps that can help you. Alternatively, you can simply find the IP address in the Nexcess customer portal for your site.

Where are the Fortnite servers located?

If you’re struggling with latency, or just interested in how things work, you might want to know where the Fortnite servers are located.

In the dim, distant past, you needed to know server names or IP addresses to connect to an online game. You’d need to enter them into your client or pick them from an ever-rotating list. Part of the metagame became picking the best servers to play the actual game on.

Pick the right ones and you’ll enjoy lower latency. That (generally) means smoother gameplay. Pick the wrong ones? It’ll be like riding a Segway through Marmite.

One of the benefits of modern video game client-server architecture is the intelligence of it all. Your client will run tests against the available servers and, whichever one has the shortest and most-stable round-trip time for a data packet – known as a ping – will be the one you wind up on. Usually, that’ll be the one that’s geographically closest to you, but if there are infrastructure issues, you might find yourself further afield. Some games – like PUBG, for one – will even try to match players with higher latency together, so at least everyone on a terrible connection is in the same boat.

If you live in a part of the world that’s less well-served, like Africa or the Middle East, players might find they struggle with latency. So here’s a question: where are the Fortnite servers located, exactly?

Fortnite server locations

Obviously, those locations aren’t exact. There isn’t a data centre in the middle of Australia – that would be silly! – but we don’t know which of Amazon’s Australian data centres specifically Fortnite is using, so we just slapped it in the middle of the country. Ditto Canada. Here’s the list in full, with some general and some specific locations, based on what we know about the availability zones they sit in:

  • Ohio, USA
  • Virginia, USA
  • California, USA
  • Oregon, USA
  • Tokyo, Japan
  • South Korea
  • Osaka, Japan
  • Mumbai, India
  • Singapore
  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Frankfurt, Germany
  • Ireland
  • London, UK
  • Paris, France
  • Sao Paulo, Brazil

And that’s the list, as it stands, in May 2019. You’ll notice a few gaps in coverage – Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Russia – that mean some players are left with higher latency connections. This is because the “nearest” server for players in Dubai might be Mumbai in India, for example, which is around 2,000km away!

But that’s not the end of the story. While the game continues to be successful and Amazon’s infrastructure grows into new areas, there’s every chance Epic might expand the Fortnite servers into more regions, if they see a significant demand for it.

It’s certainly easy enough to do when you’re running on public cloud infrastructure.

How can I find out where a website’s servers are located?

Actually, the physical server could be located anywhere inside a companies network. This IP could be pointing to an edge devices (firewall or load balancer) which redirects the traffic to the server which has a different IP address. There is no correlation between the IP address and the physical location. You can see the address where the IP is registered to but even that could be a fake address.

The IP address is a physical computer and (usually) gained through an ISP, which itself has a physical presence. There are databases that give you at least a first-pass idea of where the address is located. Some of the databases, usually with rougher or less-frequently-updated information, are free, and some charge a per-use or subscription fee.
