Binding of Isaac
The Binding of Isaac (Hebrew: עֲקֵידַת יִצְחַק ʿAqēḏaṯ Yīṣḥaq, in Hebrew also simply “the Binding”, הָעֲקֵידָה hāʿAqēḏā) is a story from the Hebrew Bible found in Genesis 22. Akedah
Akedah, (Hebrew: “Binding”) referring to the binding of Isaac as related in Genesis 22. Abraham bound his son Isaac on an altar at Moriah, as he had been instructed by God. An angel stopped Abraham when he was about to slay his son and replaced Isaac with a ram; this is the last of the 10 trials to which God subjected Abraham. Abraham here exemplifies obedience and Isaac embodies the martyr in Judaism. Because 2 Chronicles 3:1 refers to Moriah as the mountain on which the Temple is built, the story further explains the site of the Temple of Jerusalem.

Building the Temple there invokes the binding of Isaac as source of merit: God is asked to remember Abraham’s faithfulness and thereby to show mercy to his children. The sounding of the ram’s horn, or shofar, is also meant to elicit remembrance in the New Year (Rosh Hashanah) rite. On fast days, synagogue prayer includes, “Remember for us the covenant and loving kindness and oath that you swore to Abraham our father on Mount Moriah, consider the binding with which Abraham our father bound his son Isaac on the altar, suppressing his compasion so as to do your will, so may your compassion outweigh your anger against us.”

Christianity found in the binding of Isaac an archetype for the sacrifice of Jesus (Tertullian, Adversus Marcionem 3:18). Islam (Qurʾan 37:97–111) points to the Akedah as the embodiment of submission—in that version, however, it was Ishmael and not Isaac (who was not yet born) that was the proposed victim.
Abraham’s Long-Awaited Son
Genesis 1-11 tells the story of how God created all things and made humans in his image to rule on his behalf. However, the humans misuse their rule, and the world spins out of control into violence and death. This all leads up to the rebellion and scattering of the people from Babylon.
God calls a man named Abram, later known as Abraham, to launch his plan to rescue and bless the whole world through Abraham’s family.
But there’s a problem: Abraham is childless and his wife is barren. Although this problem lurks in the background of Abraham’s story, God reaffirms his promise. One day, Abraham will have a son, and his descendants will be a great nation. And after decades of waiting, Isaac was born.
But the long wait for Isaac wasn’t Abraham’s true test. This comes in the very next chapter.
The Offering of Isaac
1Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 2He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5

Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. The angel
15Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” 19So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham lived at Beersheba.
20Now it came about after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, “Behold, Milcah also has borne children to your brother Nahor: 21Uz his firstborn and Buz his brother and Kemuel the father of Aram 22and Chesed and Hazo and Pildash and Jidlaph and Bethuel.” 23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah; these eight Milcah bore to Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also bore Tebah and Gaham and Tahash and Maacah.
God
when God tells Abraham to take his beloved son and sacrifice him. Abraham must have been confused. Why would God promise him a son and then take the son away? At best, it feels like a strange inconsistency. At worst, it’s an evil trick.
Abraham
In Gen. 22:1-14, God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, his only beloved son and the heir God promised, in the region of Moriah. As Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, God intervened and provided a ram for the sacrifice.
David
David, after receiving a prophetic word from Gad, his prophet, selected the future site of the temple on Mount Moriah.
An angel told Gad to tell David that an altar should be built on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite. Both men met each other, and David asked Arunah to sell him the site. After David purchased it for about 15 pounds of gold, he built an altar to God and sacrificed offerings on it. Then, confirming his approval, God sent down fire on the altar.
David later brought the Ark of the Covenant into his city on Mount Moriah.
Solomon
God chose Solomon, David’s son, to build the temple. Solomon determined to build a great temple to honor God, and began building it on the threshing floor of Aranuah the Jebusite, the site David had previously purchased.
Jesus
Another important historical event that took place near Jerusalem and Mount Moriah was the crucifixion of Jesus.
The Common Thread
What common thread links Abraham’s experience on Mount Moriah, the Israelites, offering of sacrifices there, and Jesus’ crucifixion? On the mountain site he had chosen, God provided a substitute for sacrificing Isaac, the Jews offered sacrifices to God as a substitutionary way to receive forgiveness of sins, and Jesus took our sins upon himself and died as our sacrificial lamb.
