Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “world cup double elimination“.

Double-elimination tournament

A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament’s championship upon having lost two games or matches. It stands in contrast to a single-elimination tournament, in which only one defeat results in elimination.

One method of arranging a double-elimination tournament is to break the competitors into two sets of brackets, the winners’ bracket and losers’ bracket (W and L brackets for short; also referred to as championship bracket and elimination bracket, upper bracket and lower bracket, or main bracket and repechage) after the first round. The first-round winners proceed into the W bracket and the losers proceed into the L bracket. The W bracket is conducted in the same manner as a single-elimination tournament, except that the losers of each round “drop down” into the L bracket. Another method of double-elimination tournament management is the Draw and Process.

8 teams – 14 games

As with single-elimination tournaments, most often the number of competitors is equal to a power of two (8, 16, 32, etc.) so that in each round there is an even number of competitors and never any byes. The maximum number of games in a double-elimination tournament is one less than twice the number of teams participating (e.g., 8 teams – 15 games). The minimum number is two less than twice the number of teams (e.g., 8 teams – 14 games).

Abstract

A double-elimination tournament (DET) eliminates a team only when the team has lost twice. It is a viable alternative to a single-elimination tournament when we have time for more matches, or we wish every team to have more than one chance to demonstrate its ability. Despite its popularity, DETs have not been studied thoroughiy. In this paper we propose a new DET as an alternative to the commonly used DET.
This new format makes the tournament shorter, allows the better teams to play more matches, and makes most matches more competitive. Furthermore, the best team has a higher probability to win the championship in most cases. The new DET has many advantages when compared with the current FIFA Worid Cup [TM] tournament which requires approximately the same number of matches.

Riot Games reveal LoL World Cup plans and decision on double elimination

Following a record-breaking LoL Worlds 2019 campaign, Riot Games have dropped hints at potentially integrating a World Cup into the competitive calendar, alongside discussing the controversial tournament format after a blowout final between G2 Esports and FunPlus Phoenix.

Worlds 2019 brought an esports-wide spectacle that was lapped up by fans from far and wide, with the Grand Final almost doubling last year’s concurrent viewers and shattering previous esports viewership records.

Following the Chinese team’s dominant victory over top LEC outfit, G2 Esports, fans around the world were excited to hear that next year’s World Championship series will conclude in Shanghai — seeing a welcomed return of LoL to The Middle Kingdom.

However, the more topical point of conversation post-Worlds 2019 is not so much about the action on The Rift, but more so in relation to the tournament’s format — more specifically, the impact of introducing a double elimination bracket.

2019

Although the success of Worlds 2019 has been unprecedented, many felt that the semi-finals between G2 and SK Telecom T1 was the summit that everyone hoped for. Moreover, Reddit user, ‘realjtmoney’, posted a hypothetical example of how the tournament could have panned out should a double-elimination bracket have been implemented from the get-go.

According to the example, double-elimination would have set-up a clash between the two titans, alongside more action on The Rift — so what’s not to love? One thing to bear in mind is the logistics behind integrating more best-of-three series would prove difficult for Riot. Esports writer, Tyler Erzberger, has disclosed that Riot are sticking with the current format for the near future.

Probably never

Oh yeah, I also asked about double-elimination at Worlds.

Not happening. Not now, not in the near future, and probably never. They might discuss it for other events, but the current Worlds format is here to stay.

World Cup soccer basics, soccer World Cup explained, what is the World Cup.

The World Cup is the most widely watched sporting event in the world, and has been held every four years since 1930, with the exception of World War II. Hundreds of qualifying games are played around the world over the three years leading up to the month-long World Cup.

Even if you don’t understand soccer, you can feel the excitement of the crowds at World Cup matches.

National Teams

About 200 nations attempt to qualify for the World Cup. The “National Teams” are comprised of citizens of the particular nations, although some players will actually move to a different nation if they can’t make the team of their home nation. Most players are employed by professional teams who give them permission to play for their national team. Many nations pay the players to play for their National Team and nations try to hire the best coach, even if he’s from a different country, and they are paid very well.

The World Cup features 32 national teams (the host nation and the 31 best teams from the qualifying tournaments). The games are played over a month in the host nation(s).

There are two stages of the month-long World Cup; a “Group Stage” and a “Knockout Stage”.

Group Stage

In the first stage (the “Group Stage”), the 32 teams are placed into eight groups of four teams each. Each group consists of one “seeded” team based on FIFA Rankings and recent World Cups, and the other teams in each group are selected at random from the top finishers in qualifying play and the host team. Groups are set up so that no group contains more than two European teams or more than one team from any of the 5 other FIFA zones (there are six FIFA continental zones; Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania and Europe).

Each group plays a round-robin tournament, guaranteeing that every team will play at least three matches. The last round of matches of each group is held simultaneously to prevent collusion between nations. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. The top two teams from each group advance to the second stage (the ‘Knockout Stage’). If two or more teams finish even on points, tie-breakers are used: the first is ‘goal differential’ then total goals scored, then head-to-head results, and finally drawing of lots. In the Group Phase, games may end in a draw.

Knockout Stage

The second round, or “Knockout Stage,” is a single-elimination round in which teams play each other, and there are no draws; extra time and penalty kicks are used to decide the winner. The “Knockout Stage” begins with the “Round of 16” in which the winner of each Group plays against the runner-up from another group. This is followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals and a final. The losing semi-finalists play a match for third place.

The 7 national teams that have won the World Cup are allowed to add one star to the crest on their shirt for each World Cup their nation has won. Brazil has won 5 times, Germany and Italy 3, Argentina and Uruguay 2, and France and England once.

One reason that nations want to host the World Cup is that the host team automatically qualifies for the World Cup. Another reason is that history has shown that there is a home team advantage; England (1966) and France (1998) won their only World Cups while hosting, and South Korea finished 4th in 2002.

FIFA

The current World Cup trophy is solid gold and cannot be won outright, its ownership remains with FIFA (the world soccer governing body). The World Cup winner retains it until the next World Cup at which time they relinquish it and are given a replica gold-plated trophy.

Notice the tradition of exchanging jerseys at the end of the match. Also, you may notice the talk about international “caps”. That means the number of times a player has played for his national team. Years ago players used to actually get a cap, but I don’t believe they get one anymore. If you know more about this, please write us and we will share it.

The old 32-team format

With 32 teams, the tournament setup is simple: eight groups of four teams playing a round robin, with the top two from each group advancing to a 16-team knockout tournament to determine the champ. It’s clean and simple and easy enough for anyone to understand.

That means a total of 48 group games (six in each group) and then 15 knockout games, a total of 63 games. Every team at the World Cup finals plays at least three games, and the two finalists play seven games each.

A bigger tournament means more games are needed, which is the goal of course. More games means more TV revenue, more ad revenue, more stadium and gear revenue — more games means more money for FIFA. But it has to be more games within reason. Fans won’t watch a summer-long tournament, host nations can’t host for such extended times, and players can’t just play 90 minutes of soccer every few days for weeks on end without, you know, dying.

Thank you for staying with this post “world cup double elimination” until the end.
