She starred in the historical adventure epic Ivanhoe (1952) with Robert Taylor and Joan Fontaine. The mid-1950s marked her beginning to receive more enjoyable roles, starting with the epic drama Giant (1956), and she starred in several critically and commercially successful films in the following decade. Taylor won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in two of these film adaptations of Tennessee Williams’ plays: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959), both of which were adaptations of plays by Tennessee Williams. During the production of the film Cleopatra in 1961, Taylor and co-star Richard Burton began an extramarital affair, which caused a scandal.

Even though the public disapproved, the two continued their relationship and got married in 1964. Known by the media as “Liz and Dick”, they starred in 11 films together, including The V.I.P.s (1963), The Sandpiper (1965), The Taming of the Shrew (1967), and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). Woolf brought Taylor the best reviews of her career, winning her second Academy Award, as well as several other awards for her performance, which ended in a divorce in 1974, but they reconciled shortly afterwards, remarrying in 1975. As a result of their move to London in 1929, they opened a gallery on Bond Street, and their first child was born that same year. Taylor grew up in London and was surrounded by artists such as Augustus John and Laura Knight, as well as politicians such as Colonel Victor Cazalet.
