Communication is a process that takes place with humans .entities and non-human entities as well. When communication is done with non-human entities it is called to be extra personal communication.
The perfect coordination and understanding between human and non—human entities results to extra personal communication. In this communication one participant of the communication process uses sign language and the other is verbal.
For example, the bark of a pet dog when something happens to the master, wagging of the tail when master shows bone to the pet dog, licking of cheek at the returning of master from the work field, chirping of birds when a stranger is at the door, Parrot calling the name of the master in the morning, etc.

Types of Communication

Communication is essential for the internal functioning of any organization. The interaction between the different individuals working in an organization or company takes place through formal, informal and unofficial channels.

Formal Communication

flows through official channels and refers to the formal methods of communication that are followed in a management. It goes through a hierarchy and is associated with the particular positions of the communicator and the recipient in the organization.

Policy or procedural changes, orders, instructions, confidential reports, promotion letters etc. come under formal communication. Written communications like company manuals, handbooks, magazines, bulletins and reports that are designed to meet the specific needs of the organization are also formal communications.

Formal communication has certaindistinct features. And, It is mostly in written form using long sentences and full words without any contractions and abbreviations. It is also complex and thorough.

Informal Communication

occurs within informal groups, friends and family. It lacks official recognition and is mostly a word-of-mouth communication. Informal communication includes tea time gossip, casual gatherings, lunch time meetings etc. It is based on the informal relationships that are built up in an organization and may be conveyed by a nod, a glance, a gesture, a smile and even silence.

Formal communicationis generally more articulate (clearly expressed), direct and has got official backing. On the other hand, informal communication is more indirect, less explicit and is spontaneous and flexible. It serves the social needs of the individuals in the organization and acts as a safety valve for pent-up emotions. Nevertheless, it can also contain distorted information and may even degenerate into negative outlets of expression like rumour.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication is communication between people whose lives mutually influence one another.So, Interpersonal communication builds, maintains, and ends our relationships, and we spend more time engaged in interpersonal communication than the other forms of communication.

And, Interpersonal communication occurs in various contexts and is addressed in subfields of study within communication studies such as intercultural communication, organizational communication, health communication, and computer-mediated communication. After all, interpersonal relationships exist in all those contexts.

Interpersonal communication can be planned or unplanned, but since it is interactive, it is

usually more structured and influenced by social expectations than intrapersonal communication.

In terms of instrumental needs, the goal may be as minor as greeting someone to fulfill a morning ritual or as major as conveying your desire to be in a committed relationship with someone.

Interpersonal communication meets relational needs by communicating the uniqueness of a specific relationship. Since this form of communication deals so directly with our personal relationships and is the most common form of communication, instances of miscommunication and communication conflict most frequently occur here.Frank E. Intrapersonal Communication

You read on your phone that your friends are going to have dinner at your favourite restaurant. What comes to mind? Sights, sounds, and scents? Something special that happened the last time you were there?  Until the moment when you hit the “send” button, you are communicating with yourself.

Communications expert Leonard Shedletsky examined intrapersonal communication through the eight basic components of the communication process (i.e., source, receiver, message, channel, feedback, environment, context, and interference) as transactional, but all the interaction occurs within the individual (Shedletsky, 1989).

From planning to problem solving, internal conflict resolution, and evaluations and judgments of self and others, we communicate with ourselves through intrapersonal communication.

All this interaction takes place in the mind without externalization, and all of it relies on previous interaction with the external world.

Mass communication

Itis conveys messages to an entire populace. Mass media informs, educates, and entertains. It can be categorised under three heads – a) Print Media (for e.g. books, newspapers,

magazines); b) Electronic Media (for e.g. audio – radio, audio-visual – films, TV, Internet; c) Speeches given by a prophet or political reader. Itis differs from other forms of

communication in the following ways:  messages are aimed at and carefully tailored to

specific demographic audiences; there is no direct contact between sender and receiver; the sender has total control over the message sent;  the sender has no way of clarifying miscommunications immediately;  mass communication is generally sponsored by large organizations.

Group Communication

It is interaction of persons belonging to small groups.  Group members should listen effectively and understand their role. Effective communication means better feedback and decision making. Group size and physical arrangement are the important factors. Effective groups share ideas and reach to conclusion. All members should feel comfortable while sharing ideas.

Organizational Communication

In a team-based business organization, communication becomes its lifeblood where people communicate with one another. The flow of communication inside an organization may filter in up, down and horizontal directions. Besides internal communication. companies depend on external communication also. Companies exchange messages with people outside the organization through external communication.

Differences Between Interpersonal Vs. Intrapersonal Communication

The biggest difference that you need to know about between interpersonal vs intrapersonal communication is that interpersonal is between two or more people, and intrapersonal is between you and yourself.

Here are the other main differences:

1. Parties Involved

In interpersonal communication, there’s always more than one person. It doesn’t matter if the communication happens online, over the phone, or in an email. Two people communicating means interpersonal.

2. Reasons

The reasons you may want to use interpersonal communication is to tell a story, share an idea or experience, or relay information to someone else or a group of people.

The reasons you may be using intrapersonal communication is to reflect on something that happened, make goals and plans, visualize the future, and get closer with your own feelings.

3. Media And Feedback

Feedback for interpersonal communication can be vast — it may be verbal, nonverbal (such as a shrug, nod, or eyebrow raise), or it may be oral or written. Interpersonal feedback can be in person, over the phone, on a computer, or in a letter.

Media used for intrapersonal communication is much simpler — it is always going to be

considered in person, although can be done live, in audio recordings, or in writing. Feedback for intrapersonal communication is hard to define. Your feedback is your own and only you know how you react to your own feelings, thoughts, and ideas.
