Can you overcook chicken in the slow cooker? Yes, it is possible! If the meat is cooked too long it could end up dry and not juicy and tender. The recommended times in my recipe are ideal for juicy results, but if you use less chicken than the recipe calls for I would recommend checking it sooner.
Handheld electric mixer: Place chicken in a large bowl, turn the mixer on medium-low and press the beaters into the chicken breasts. They will break up the meat as they spin. Continue until the chicken is mostly shredded and the beaters don’t seem to be breaking anything up any longer.
Shredded chicken that you make at home is almost guaranteed to be lower in sodium and fat than store-bought rotisserie chicken. Cook the Meat You Want. I like to make shredded chicken breasts, because most of the time I prefer white meat. If your household is more into dark meat, you can cook all chicken thighs.
You can definitely put raw chicken in a crockpot. As long as chicken reaches a certain temperature in the cooking process, you’re good to go. You’ll want to check the meatiest area with a meat thermometer to ensure it’s at 165 degrees or higher.
Cook on LOW for 2-3 hours or HIGH for 1-2 hours. Bone-in chicken is less likely to dry out than boneless, so you have flexibility to cook the chicken on high.
Place the chicken and stock, broth, or water in a 4-quart or larger slow cooker. Cook the chicken. Cover and cook until the chicken is tender and registers an internal temperature of 165°F, 4 to 5 hours on the LOW setting, or 2 to 3 hours on the HIGH setting.
Browning helps the meat retain its moisture during cooking in a slow cooker. Leaner cuts of meat will become a bit dryer in a slow cooker than fatty cuts. Sometimes, you have to work to find that balance of “not-too-dry” and “still healthy”. Marinate your meat overnight before cooking.
The truth is, yes, leaving the slow cooker on and going about your day is safe, as long as you are using the appliance properly.
If you are new to cooking or slow cookers, or if you are just looking for ideas to make weeknight meals all the speedier, I can’t recommend this slow cooker chicken enough. Add ketchup, brown sugar, cider vinegar, molasses and Worcestershire sauce to saucepan and stir until combined. Pour barbecue sauce into slow cooker with beef and stir well. If you’ve ever caught yourself in need of a rotisserie chicken but didn’t have one, then knowing how to boil chicken will be your saving grace. With no time (or energy) to run to the store, boiling chicken is the perfect way to get to tender, juicy chicken that’s easy to shred.
Shred chicken while it’s warm. Warm chicken shreds much easier than cold. If you want to slice your chicken breasts for sandwiches and salads, then cold is the way to go. Stir some of the cooking liquid back into the shredded chicken for moist, flavorful shredded chicken.
Regular white rice, you will not need basmati or anything more expensive to make this rice dish. Brown rice would be fine as well, a nuttier, heartier version of the BBQ rice.
You do not need to add any liquid. Chickens today typically have some solution added, so they rarely need added liquid. At the end of the cooking time, the meat will be tender, practically falling off the bone.
To start, brine your chicken in a mixture of water and a few tablespoons of salt for about 20 to 30 minutes. This will boost the natural flavor and moisture of the chicken breasts and will leave you with a super tender piece of meat. This is the one step that will really ensure your chicken won’t be dry or tough.
Close-up of a woman slicing raw chicken breast meat on a cutting board. Chicken becomes more tender the longer it cooks. Unfortunately, most cooking methods produce extremely dry meat when the chicken is cooked long enough to become tender.
