It is believed that John Wayne Gacy (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994) is one of the most well-known American serial killers and sex offenders. He raped, tortured, and murdered at least 33 young men and boys in Norwood Park Township, an area near Chicago where he was born and raised. Due to the performances he made as Pogo the Clown or Patches the Clown, personas he had devised prior to discovering his crimes, he became known as the Killer Clown.
All of the murders that Gary committed were committed inside his ranch-style house in Norwood Park Township, where he would usually lure victims to his house and trick them into wearing handcuffs on the pretext of performing a magic trick. After raping and torturing his captives, he would either asphyxiate or strangle them with a garrote in an attempt to kill them. There were 26 victims buried in the crawl space of his home; three others were buried elsewhere on his property; four of the victims were thrown into the Des Plaines River.

Gacy had previously been convicted in 1968 of the sodomy of a teenage boy in Waterloo, Iowa, and was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment, though he served only eighteen months of the sentence. In 1972, he murdered his first victim, he murdered two more by the end of 1975, and by 1976, he had murdered at least thirty more victims before he divorced his second wife. On December 21, 1978, Gacy was arrested as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Des Plaines teenager Robert Piest.
Having been convicted of a total of thirty-three murders (by one individual), Gacy was then convicted of the most homicides committed in the United States. In 1980, Gacy was sentenced to death. While he was on death row at Menard Correctional Center, he spent much of his time painting. On May 10, 1994, Gacy was executed by lethal injection at Stateville Correctional Center.

On March 17, 1942, John Wayne Gacy was born at Edgewater Hospital in Chicago, Illinois as the second of three children and the only son of John Stanley Gacy (June 20, 1900 – December 25, 1969) and Marion Elaine Gacy née Robison (May 4, 1908 – December 14, 1989) . In addition to his father being a machinist in the auto repair industry and a World War I veteran, his mother was a homemaker.
Gacy hailed from a Catholic family, and his family was of Polish and Danish ancestry. He had immigrated to the U.S. from Poland (which was part of the German state of Prussia at the time) with his paternal grandparents (who spelled their name “Gatza” or “Gaca”).

despite the close relationship he had with his mother and two sisters, Gacy endured a difficult time with his father, who was an alcoholic and physically abusive to his family. It was the elder Gacy who often belittled his son, calling him dumb and stupid and comparing him unfavorably to his sisters. One of the earliest memories Gacy has of being beaten by his father with a leather belt as a child. He was punished for disassembling components of a car engine he assembled when he was four years old. A mother of Gacy attempted to protect him from his father’s abuse. Even though Gacy loved his father, despite this mistreatment, he still felt he was “never good enough” in his father’s eyes, which led to accusations that he would “probably grow up queer” and that he was a “sissy” and a “mama’s boy”.

In the same year, Gacy was molested in his truck by a family friend and contractor. He never told his father about this, for fear of being blamed.

During his fourth-grade year, Gacy experienced blackouts. As a result of a heart condition, he had to avoid sports at school. Gacy was overweight and unathletic. He was
hospitalized for these episodes as well as for a burst appendix during 1957. During Gacy’s teenage years, he spent almost a year in hospital, and he attributed his poor grades to missing school. His father suspects that the episodes he has been experiencing were an attempt to gain sympathy and attention from his father. It was during his stay in the hospital that he openly accused his son of faking the condition. Despite the fact that his mother, sisters, and a few close friends never doubted his illness, an accurate diagnosis of Gacy’s condition was never
made.
As a student of Gacy’s in high school, one of his friends told me that Gacy’s father ridiculed and beat him without provocation on several occasions. It was on one occasion in 1957 that he witnessed Gacy’s father emerge drunk from the family basement and belittling, then hitting, his son. In the altercation, Gacy’s mother intervened when her son merely raised his hands to defend himself. According to a friend, Gacy did not strike his father’s back during these confrontations.

At the age of one, Christine Gacy’s father was

sentenced in December 1968.
After a little over a year, on Sept. 18, 1969, Marlynn was granted full custody of her two children, Michael and Christine, as well as divorce from her husband. Although Marlynn filed for divorce based on “cruel and inhuman treatment,” she admitted that the sodomy charge was a surprise.
During an interview with The New York Times, Marlynn said later that she had “problems believing that John was homosexual.” She also said he had been a good father and he had never behaved violently towards her or her children.
In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Karen Gacy, John Wayne Gacy’s sister, has admitted that she also did not believe that John Wayne Gacy was guilty of the sodomy charge – because he insisted on his innocence. “I sometimes wonder if he hadn’t
been so believable, maybe the rest of his life might not have been the way it was,” she said.
After that point in time, Michael and Christine Gacy grew up away from their father. They never heard from him again. But as they faded out of public memory, John Wayne Gacy carved his name into it. to 1972, he began committing murders.
