Career of Kenny Lattimore

1988–1991: Maniquin

A stint as session vocalist for R&B group Maniquin led to an official position in the group as lead singer. It is also worth mentioning that D’Extra Wiley of the 1990s R&B group II D Extreme was also a member of Maniquin briefly before signing to MCA Records. It was released for Epic Records in 1989 as a sole album. The single, “I Wanna Ride,” was a direct response to Pebbles’ hit single “Mercedes Boy” both in sound and lyrics. Charlie Wilson, the producer and co-writer on both artists’ singles, also produced and co-written them. As a result of Lattimore’s departure from Maniquin to pursue a solo career, the group disbanded shortly thereafter.

1994–1999: Kenny Lattimore and From the Soul of Man

Having signed with Columbia Records in late 1994, Lattimore released his own debut album Kenny Lattimore on Columbia Records in 1996. That album included a pair of Top 20 hits, “Never Too Busy”, as well as the Grammy-nominated “For You”, written by a high school friend named Kenny Lerum. As a result of this album, Lattimore won the NAACP Image Award for Best New Artist in 1996, and the album eventually reached a sales level of Gold.If you are interested in knowing about the life of other celebrities like Marjorie Diamond, we have provided complete explanations about them in Sulcerin.

As a follow up to his first album, From the Soul of Man in 1998 was another critically acclaimed collection of classically styled soul music that yielded the hits “Days Like This” and “If I Lose My Woman”, along with a standout cover of The Beatles’ classic “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

2000–2006: Arista Records and Weekend

upon returning from a short hiatus, the singer was signed to a new contract by Arista Records president Clive Davis after a short hiatus. Under L.A. Reid’s regime, Davis eventually released a more contemporary R&B album, 2001’s Weekend, since he was limited in the number of artists he could take to his next venture, J Records. As the title track and first single of the album was anchored by a sample of Blondie’s “Rapture,” it became a radio favorite on both sides of the Atlantic in both countries.

Despite Davis having a different vision for his career, he managed to record three albums for Arista Records as Reid also had a vision that included the creation of a modern-day version of the classic soul duo with his wife, the Gold-level artist Chante Moore, with whom he recorded two duet albums that have been highly acclaimed both critically and commercially. He is known for his dramatic stage shows, vocal agility, and romantic ambiance in keeping with the “lover man” image that made him so popular with the hits that sparked his career. As described by the New York Times, he is a “modern soul man” on stage. In interviews, he has long stated that his personal mission is to show the “strong side, but also the sensitive, caring side of Black men.”

then…

In 2003, Lattimore and his then-wife Chante Moore released a duet album titled Things That Lovers Do featuring two new original songs and classic soul songs from the 1970s and 1980s. There were two standout singles on the album, “Loveable (From Your Head to Your Toes)” and a cover of René & Angela’s “You Don’t Have To Cry”. Lattimore and Moore continued promoting the album by touring with a successful stage show that was very successful.

As a follow-up to Things That Lovers Do, Lattimore and Moore released another collaborative album. It was
titled Uncovered/Covered (2006) that the duo released their second collaborative album together. As a result of the album, the Billboard R&B charts sat at number ten and the Billboard Gospel charts sat at number two. The duo’s cover version of “You’re All I Need to Get By” was used as the theme song for the BET reality show The Family Crew.
