Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “role analysis technique”.
The role analysis technique intervention is designed to clarify role expectations and obligations of team members to improve team effectiveness. In an organisation, individuals fill different specialised roles in which they manifest certain behaviours.
6.5 ROLE ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE (RAT)
Thomas and Dayal (1968) developed a technique of role analysis. The following four steps are involved in RAT (Dayal, 1969).
The Role negotiation technique is an imposed structure for controlled negotiations between two or more parties in which each party agrees in writing to change certain behaviours in exchange for changes in behaviour by the others. The behaviours are job related.
Roger Harrison
When the causes of team ineffectiveness are based on people’s behaviours that they are unwilling to change because it would mean a loss of power or influence to the individual, a technique developed by Roger Harrison called “role negotiation” can often be used to great advantage.
Three methods of Job Analysis are based on observation. These are- Direct Observation; Work Method Analysis, including time and motion studies and micro-motion analysis; and critical incident method.
Information obtained from a job analysis can be used to develop performance appraisal forms. An example of a job analysis-based form would be one that lists the job’s tasks or behaviors and specifies the expected performance level for each. The role of job analysis is crucial here.
Role analysis uses the same techniques as job analysis but the focus is on identifying inputs (knowledge and skill and competency requirements) and required outcomes (key result areas or accountabilities) rather than simply listing the tasks to be carried out.
Job descriptions can be written as a joint effort between supervisor and employee, but the supervisor must approve. A job description contains the following components: job title, job purpose, job duties and responsibilities, required qualifications, preferred qualifications and working conditions.
Role analysis (also known as job evaluation) is a systematic approach used to determine the relative value (or size) of roles within an organisation by measuring the demands and responsibilities of the role (but not the performance of the individual undertaking the role).
Negotiation holds the key to getting ahead in the workplace, resolving conflicts, and creating value in contracts. When disputes arise in business and personal relationships, it’s easy to avoid conflict in an effort to save the relationship.
Team Interventions are also a part of a larger OD intervention strategy that employs a problem-solving approach to teambuilding that helps established teams identify and address obstacles and constraints to high performance.
Organizational diagnosis is the use of conceptual models and applied research methods to assess an organization’s current state and discover ways to solve problems, meet challenges, or enhance performance.
What is the meaning of Organizational development?
Organization Development is an objectives based approach to systems change within an organization. Organization Development enables organizations to build and sustain a new desired state for the entire organization.
The most effective technique when collecting information for a job analysis is to obtain information through direct observation as well as from the most qualified incumbent(s) via questionnaires or interviews.
Induction is the process for welcoming newly recruited employees and supporting them to adjust to their new roles and working environments. Starting a new job can be a stressful experience and new employees need help to settle in.
Guidelines for completing these sections are as follows: 1) read each definition carefully before answering, 2) consider the job, not yourself, 3) answer based on the job as it currently exists, 4) select the most appropriate answer(s) for each question.
In the opinion of Strauss and Sayles (1977), job analysis consists of two parts, a statement of work to be done (Job description) and the skills and knowledge which must be possessed by anyone filling the job (Job Specification)”.
The fundamental difference between the two is: job description is the summary of all the tasks, role, and responsibilities that the company is offering to the candidate, and job specification is an overview of all the attributes, experience, skills, and qualification that the company is looking for in a candidate.
Rats and mice are both rodents, so look similar – the biggest difference is their size. Rats are larger and heavier while mice have smaller slender bodies. Mice also have long slender tails (for their body size) covered in hair compared to rat tails which are shorter, thicker and hairless.
Definition and purpose: A job description shows the specific duties and responsibilities for a specific role, whereas a job profile expresses the personal qualifications, skills, traits and other relevant qualities that an individual requires to successfully perform the respective job.

A role descriptor is a summary of the most important aspects of a job that includes a brief summary, fundamental responsibilities, and work dimension details that are typical for the career level. Role descriptors create the foundation for career development.
Helps in Deciding Compensation Package for a Specific Job: A genuine and unbiased process of job analysis helps managers in determining the appropriate compensation package and benefits and allowances for a particular job. This is done on the basis of responsibilities and hazards involved in a job.
Role efficacy is the potential effectiveness of an individual occupying a particular role in the organization. Research shows that persons with high role efficacy seem to experience less role stress, anxiety and work related tensions as it increases Managerial Effectiveness (Bamel, Budhwar, Stokes, & Paul, 2017).
There’s three basic styles – three basic default types to negotiation, and each has an advantage. Ultimately the best negotiator incorporates the best of all three. Assertive (aggressive), Accommodator (relationship oriented) and Analyst (conflict avoidant) are the types.
Another view of negotiation comprises 4 elements:
Strategy,
Process,
Tools, and.
Tactics.
OD interventions include team development, laboratory training, managerial grid training, brainstorming and intergroup team building. The intervention should take place at all three levels, namely, individual, group and organisation.
These concomitants suggest a criterion for the depth of intervention: to intervene at a level no deeper than that required to produce enduring solutions to the problems at hand.
OD is concerned with the various groups in the organisation and their interactions with each other. It is concerned with formal as well as informal or social relationships. It is concerned with group structures, processes and attitudes. OD emphasizes on the relationships among the groups not on the groups themselves.
To ensure the team runs as smoothly as possible, and goals are hit, it’s in everyone’s best interest to implement the five stages of team development: forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. If you’re new to this concept, you’re not alone. Let’s break it down!

Techniques of Organisational Diagnosis
Force Field Analysis (1951)
Leavitt’s model (1965)
Likert system analysis (1967)
Weisbord’s six-box model; (1976) defined by focusing on: One major output, exploring the extent in which consumers of the output are satisfied with it, and tracing the reasons for any dissatisfaction.
Organization development (OD) is an effort that focuses on improving an organization’s capability through the alignment of strategy, structure, people, rewards, metrics, and management processes.
Five growth stages are observable: birth, growth, maturity, decline, and revival. They traced changes in the organizational structure and managerial processes as the business proceeds through the growth stages.
The human resources department plays a vital role in this development by recruiting highly-skilled people who fit into the culture of the company. The HR department also manages the growth of employees through training and fills employment gaps to help secure a competitive advantage.
Common methods are observations, interviews, questionnaires, and specialized methods of analysis.
An example of a job analysis-based form would be one that lists the job’s tasks or behaviors and specifies the expected performance level for each. The role of job analysis is crucial here.
Four primary methods of job evaluations used to set compensation levels are point factor, factor comparison, job ranking and job classification.
Induction is the process of introducing a new employee to the company culture and processes with the aim of bringing them up to speed as quickly as possible as well as making them feel socially comfortable and aware of their professional responsibilities.
Induction, also known as orientation, is a process of making the new employee familiar with the work environment and the fellow employees.
A properly performed job analysis is adequate for laying strong organization foundation. … There are various tools and techniques such as O*Net model, PAQ model, FJA model, F-JAS model and competency model that help HR managers to develop genuine job description and job specification data.
