Dunlop Tortex Standard

custom Jim Dunlop picks
Hetfield currently uses custom Jim Dunlop picks in 1.0mm and 1.14mm gauges. His custom Black Fang pick is based on a vintage tortoise-shell pick (which he used for the first 20 years of the band), while his White Fang is based on a Dunlop Flow pick.
Beginning players should use a pick if they’re playing an instrument with steel strings. They should also use a pick when they’re playing melodies or as lead guitar and when they’re playing a rhythmic chord progression. Another good time to use a pick is when they’re improvising.
John Mayer Strings and Picks
Mayer is an Ernie Ball player using Regular Slinky 10-46 on his electrics and Earthwood Phosphor Bronze on his acoustics. Mayer favored Dunlop Tortex picks – the well known 0.88mm green ones – for many years.
In his early days his style was more blues-based, and he used a pick. But as his musical direction evolved, he ditched his pick in the 1980s, grabbing influences from jazz, electronica, “world” music and elsewhere to really explore the guitar’s capabilities as a sound-producing instrument.
Keith Richards does often play with a pick. However, on songs such as Honky Tonk Women, Richards does fingerpick without the use of a pick. His unique style has its roots in his individual, one-of-a-kind techniques that countless guitar players have tried to emulate.
When playing alone, or in a small crowd or even when you are recording – playing electric guitar without a pick (with your finger) is absolutely fine. Your fingers can do everything that a pick can.
