Do you have an Air Fryer? I usually don’t fall for new kitchen appliances and I still haven’t caved to the Instapot (yet) but FOMO (fear of missing out) was strong on this one!

I mean, can chicken fried in air REALLY taste like it was fried in oil like the reviews are saying??? Would my french fries seriously “fry” up crisp and golden without needing to use oil?

Nuh-uhn, stop playing! I didn’t believe it at all. So off to King Amazon, I went!

I read a dizzying number of reviews and felt completely stumped on which brand or size to get. After playing eeny meeny miny moe, I landed on the 3.8QT Habor Air Fryer. It looked pretty straight forward without too many settings to fool with and had great reviews.

Amazon Prime had it on my doorsteps in a matter of hours. Ahhh the many perks to living close to an Amazon fulfillment center. Prime real estate people!

The first thing I tried and Instagrammed about was some store-bought nuggets and fries for my boys. I. FELL.IN.LOVE. It cooked them quick, and they were perfectly crisp!

My next test was a major one! This would make or break my love for the air fryer and that test was homemade southern-style fried chicken! I made a basic Southern-Style Fried Chicken recipe and threw it in the air fryer. Although I’m sure any fried chicken recipe would work.

The results: Perfectly golden, crisp and crunchy Air Fryer Southern-fried chicken! Wow it works!

Now, let me just say, and this is my opinion, but it DOES NOT taste like it’s fried in oil. The greasy, deliciousness of deep-fried foods are in a league of their own and that’s the way God intended.

However, it does taste similar to a Southern fried chicken that’s baked in the oven on a grill pan, which is delicious!  I’ve noticed that the breading on foods fried in the air fryer seem to be much more fragile and the crispiness doesn’t last long.

s it’s best to go light on breading and serve immediately. I’ve also noticed that when I fry chicken in the air fryer I don’t need to brine it in buttermilk like I usually do. It’s so juicy!


  • 2 cups crushed Ritz crackers (about 50)
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt / 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon rubbed sage
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 broiler/fryer chicken (3 to 4 pounds), cut up
  • Cooking spray


In small bowl, mix Seasoning Mix ingredients.

In shallow bowl, mix buttermilk and 1 tablespoon of the seasoning mix. Cut chicken breasts in half crosswise, and add to buttermilk mixture. Turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour.

Meanwhile, cut 8-inch round of cooking parchment paper. Place in bottom of air fryer basket. Spray with cooking spray.

In shallow bowl, mix flour with remaining 1 tablespoon seasoning mix. Remove 4 pieces chicken from marinade, keeping remaining chicken refrigerated, and dredge the 4 pieces in flour mixture.

Place coated chicken on parchment in air fryer basket. Spray top of chicken with cooking spray.
Set to 325°F; cook 10 minutes. Turn chicken; spray tops with more cooking spray, and cook 8 to 12 minutes longer or until chicken is cooked through (at least 165°F). Keep warm. Repeat with remaining chicken, and discard any remaining marinade and flour mixture.

5 ounces cooked chicken: 410 calories, 23g fat (6g saturated fat), 135mg cholesterol, 460mg sodium, 13g carbohydrate (2g sugars, 1g fiber), 36g protein.

How long should you cook chicken in an air fryer?

How long you should cook chicken in an air fryer really depends on your brand of air fryer and the recipe itself. In our testing, we have found cook times vary dramatically between brands of air fryers. As a result, we have given wider than normal ranges on suggested cook times. Begin checking at the first time listed and adjust as needed. Most chicken will take about 20-25 min or until it reaches 165F.

Is air fried chicken healthy?

Air-fried chicken isn’t necessarily “healthy,” but it cuts down on calories from fat that would otherwise be used to deep-fry foods, like classic fried chicken. So, with the way air fryers work, the recipes made in them are slimmed down compared to conventionally fried ones, and that’s what a lot of us are looking for these days: to save calories while eating food that tastes great.

Can you air fry frozen chicken?

Putting frozen chicken in the air fryer is safe and doable. Once your chicken is prepped, preheat the air fryer to 360F. Cook for 20-25 min or until the internal temperature reaches 165F. 

My chicken came out soggy underneath the breading?

This can happen when using too much egg (not letting the excess drip off) or cooking on the wrong tempt. My air fryer says to cook chicken on 350.F however, other air fryers may require a different temperature. Follow the instructions on your’s but don’t be afraid to try a different temperature.

There is still flour on my chicken even when it’s cooked through.

A very light coating of oil before you place your chicken in the fryer and midway through should get rid of all the flour. If a light coating of oil is not enough, then there is too much flour on the chicken.

My chicken is not done after the allotted time.

Cook it longer and use a meat thermometer. Feel free to check it often when you are just getting the hang of frying chicken in an air fryer.

Can I use a different flour, oil, skip the egg, etc.

This is the ONLY way I’ve made fried chicken in the Air Fryer so I can’t give my results on substitutions.

Is the air fryer really worth it??

Honey, I don’t know. Some folks live by them just like they live by the George Foreman grill! When I first got my Air Fryer and made nuggets and fries for my sons I was sold.

However, when it came to making larger meals for the whole family, things needed to be cooked in batches. I found myself pushing my air fryer to the side and just going back to the oven so I could get it done all at once.

Is The Air Fryer Chicken Heavy

The air fryer is nice and light, and with very little oil, you too can get healthy, crisped dinners (chicken, etc.). And, it saves you a ton of time because it doesn’t require you to wait for the oven to preheat, and the dishes quickly cook, compared to the oven.

Can I Use A Gluten-Free Flour

If you need a gluten-free option, go right ahead and reach for a gluten-free flour blend. You want something that mimics the texture of flour without being overpowering in flavor. You will dredge just the same and serve and enjoy.

The same goes for if you wanted to do a keto style breading. I am sure almond flour ground up fine would work great, or a blend of coconut and almond flour in one.

Can You Freeze Air Fried Chicken 

If you make up extra chicken or find extra on hand, allow the chicken to cool down a bit. Then place in a freezer bag or airtight container and freeze for up to three months.

When you want to eat it, remove and cook in the oven straight from frozen, covered with aluminum foil. Or you can opt to thaw it in the fridge the night before. Then reheat in the air fryer to help get the outside crispy again, or do the microwave.

Best Sides to Make With Air Fryer Chicken

Sweet Potato Hash | Here is a different style of side dish. Transform your sweet potatoes into a hash recipe. This is one of my favorites and compliments the chicken.
Instant Pot Broccoli | Here is a wonderful way to whip up broccoli if you enjoy it. This allows for the perfectly tender broccoli that pairs great for a vegetable side dish.
Air Fryer Veggie Tots | I love taking frozen veggie tots and cooking them up for a crispy and delicious outside filled with tasty vegetable flavor. Dip in some ranch, or eat alone.

Best Way To Reheat Fried Chicken

I have found reheating your chicken in the air fryer is the best method. You reheat for a few moments until it warms it up. This allows keeping the integrity of the breading.

If you do the microwave, it can make the breading and skin feel a bit softer and rubbery in texture. Go ahead and heat it as you would like. Just remember chicken is a bit delicate and can dry out if overheated.
