Air Fryer Frozen Brussels Sprouts

Can you air fry frozen brussels sprouts? Absolutely! Air fryer frozen brussels sprouts are a quick and easy vegetable side dish that goes with loads of different dinner dishes.

Ready in minutes and with a few simple seasonings, frozen brussels sprouts in the air fryer are just a touch easier to make than raw brussels sprouts in the air fryer!

Why Sprouts In Air Fryer?

When you cook sprouts in air fryer, they taste much better than cooked in the skillet or baked in the oven.

It is like eating roasted sprouts that have been made extra crispy due to a lot of fats.

The only difference is that when you cook sprouts in air fryer, hardly any oil is used at all and they are very simple to prep.

Plus, you can mix and match your ingredients to make your favourite type of brussel sprouts.

At Christmas we always have air fryer brussel sprouts with bacon and you can make these, or opt for how we are having them today which is air fryer brussel sprouts with maple syrup.

Recipe Tips

Before you cook air fryer brussels sprouts from frozen, be sure to read through these few tips:

  • You don’t need to thaw the frozen brussels sprouts first. Simply add them to the preheated air fryer from frozen.
  • We just added a few simple spices like salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can tweak the spices however you like – maybe a bit of cayenne pepper for slight kick?
  • Don’t overcrowd the air fryer as this can keep the brussels sprouts from cooking evenly. We don’t have a problem fitting one pound of brussels sprouts into our 6-quart air fryer. But if yours is significantly smaller, you might have make less or cook them in two batches.
  • These frozen brussels sprouts will likely not get as crispy and brown as fresh brussels sprouts because of the excess moisture (due to being frozen). They are still amazing as a quick side dish – just don’t be surprised if they don’t end up that crispy.
  • We’ve also made brussels sprouts with bacon in the air fryer – but those were from fresh We don’t recommend putting raw bacon with these frozen brussels sprouts because the moisture is likely to keep the bacon from cooking well/crisping.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb frozen Brussel sprouts
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt
  • 1/8 tsp ground black pepper

Step by Step Instructions

If you’re wondering how to cook frozen brussels sprouts in the air fryer, you can follow the recipe process photos below for the step-by-step instructions!

If you just want to know how long to cook frozen brussels sprouts in the air fryer without visuals, you can skip down to the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

First, preheat the air fryer to 380 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, add the frozen brussels sprouts, oil, salt, garlic powder, and pepper into a bowl.

When the air fryer is hot, add the brussels sprouts into the air fryer tray and shake the basket so that they settle into one even layer.

You don’t want to overcrowd your air fryer – this could result in the brussels sprouts cooking unevenly.

Cook the frozen brussels sprouts at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes until tender and lightly browned.

Shake the air fryer basket approximately every 4 minutes to help with even cooking.Once the brussels sprouts are done, remove them from the air fryer and serve. Enjoy!

Notes

Instead of adding maple syrup and cinnamon, other variations include topping the finished dish with parmesan. Or how about mixing in some precooked bacon or adding a little balsamic glaze.

Brussel sprouts are technically soft and cooked through sooner than 17-18 minutes but they’ll still have their bitter taste. Cooking them until slightly charred brings out their caramelized flavor and reduces the bitter taste.

Mix in other vegetables like mushrooms, onion slices, or small pieces of butternut squash. (Read article How do you mince an onion to learn how to chop onions)

Whether you have a basket style unit or oven style, the cook time should be similar. However, all models can vary so keep an extra close eye on the recipe the first time you make it and adjust the time accordingly to your model.

For best results, make sure the sprouts are spread in an even layer and have space on all sides.

Are Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts Healthy?

Yes they are. You can cook brussel sprouts just as they are and just toss them in salt and pepper.

They will taste much better compared to the old school method of boiling them until they are green balls of horrible mush.

You can toss your brussel sprouts in a small amount of extra virgin olive oil and maple syrup for the best results.

Cooked this way your air fryer brussel sprouts will still be suitable for:

Are Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts Crispy?

Yes air fryer brussel sprouts are super crispy. Though you need to have a good cook time on your brussel sprouts in order to allow them to crisp up properly and taste delicious.

Can I make this without oil?

Yes, you can also cook them with no oil and seasoning. Simply air fry your frozen Brussel sprouts for 17-18 minutes and then spritz with oil and add salt and pepper to taste after cooking.

What to serve with Brussel sprouts?

Serve your air fried Brussel sprouts with air fryer chicken breasts, air fryer chicken drumsticks, or air fryer pork chops for a quick and easy meal that is low-carb and gluten-free.

Can I stack the Frozen Brussel Sprouts in Air Fryer?

You will get the best results if you lay the Brussel sprouts in a single layer with space around each piece. If you stack, they might not get as crispy or browned. Shake your basket every 5 minutes if stacked.

Can I double this recipe?

You can…but you’ll likely need to do two batches of cooking in the air fryer so you don’t crowd the basket. Unless, of course, you have a massive air fryer. Keep the first round of Brussels warm in the oven while the second round cooks.

SERVING AIR FRYER BRUSSELS SPROUTS

Cooking frozen brussels sprouts in the air fryer is one of the most versatile side dishes. You can mix and match garnishes for a choose-your-own-flavor adventure!

For simplicity’s sake, most often I serve them with a sprinkle of parmesan and a squeeze of fresh lemon. A little brightness, saltiness, and cheese. Check and check! Here are a few other ways to enjoy them:

  • Drizzle a balsamic vinegar glaze
  • Tahini and everything but the bagel seasoning (as pictured here)
  • Chimichurri sauce
  • Toss them in buffalo sauce and garnish with blue cheese (or dip them in blue cheese dressing!)
  • Ranch dressing
  • Use the maple dijon vinaigrette from this brussels sprout salad

MAKING FROZEN BRUSSELS SPROUTS IN THE OVEN

So, maybe you don’t have an air fryer but you still want to make the easiest frozen brussels sprouts ever. No problem! You can make these in the oven too. In fact, if you have convection, be sure to turn that on, as that’s essentially what an air fryer does on a smaller scale.

To make frozen brussels sprouts in the oven, preheat the oven to 450°F. On a baking sheet, toss the frozen sprouts with olive oil and seasonings – again, no need to cut or halve them. Bake for 10 minutes before tossing them, then continue to bake for about 10 additional minutes, until the outsides are crispy. The interior will be tender and soft, giving the best contrast of textures.
