PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment has developed a home video game console known as the PlayStation 5 (PS5). The PlayStation 4 successor was announced in April 2019, was released on November 12, 2020, in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, and South Korea, and was released worldwide one week later on November 12, 2020. Together with the Xbox Series X and S consoles that were released by Microsoft on the same month in the ninth generation of video game consoles, the PlayStation 5 is a part of the ninth generation of video game consoles.

There are two variants of this console: the base model comes with an optical disc drive that supports Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. The Digital Edition does not come with this drive as it was designed to be a lower-cost model that could only be purchased via download.

The PlayStation 5’s main hardware features include a solid-state drive customized for high-speed data streaming to enable significant improvements in storage performance, a solid-state drive optimized for high-speed data streaming to enable significant improvements in storage performance, AMD’s GPU capable of 4K resolution display at up to 120 frames per second, hardware-accelerated ray tracing to generate realistic lighting and reflections, and Tempest Engine to produce 3D audio effects that are hardware-accelerated. In addition to the DualSense controller with haptic feedback, backward compatibility with the majority of PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games, as well as the PlayStation VR2 headset, there are a number of other features of the PlayStation VR2.

History of PlayStation 5

Development of PlayStation 5

When the PlayStation 4 was launched, Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PlayStation console line, implemented a two-year feedback cycle. Sony’s first-party developers were regularly visited twice a year by the company to learn what concerns they had with Sony’s current hardware, and how such hardware could be improved in future console refreshes and for the next generation of consoles. As a result of this feedback, the console development team was able to prioritize its efforts based on these priorities.

It was a key concern for the PlayStation 5 during the development process that the loading times for games were very long. Several developers, including Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney, told Cerny that standard I/O speeds of hard disk drives were now a limiting factor in advancing the development of games. In order to reduce load times in a game, slow data rates placed limits on the size of data that could be loaded into the game, the physical location of data on the storage medium, and the duplication of data across the medium. It was important to find ways to reduce loading time, particularly for games that stream or dynamically load new game areas as the player moves around the game world, so that loading times could be reduced.

According to Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Sony has been researching the feasibility of a low-cost, lower-spec version of the PlayStation 5, just like Microsoft did with its Xbox Series X and its lower-power counterpart the Xbox Series S. Sony has concluded that such consoles do not fare well in the long run and are quickly discarded as a result.

Marketing and release of PlayStation 5

It was in April 2019 that Cerny gave the first public description of the new console in an interview with Wired magazine. In early 2019, Sony’s financial report for the quarter ending March 31, 2019, confirmed that new next-generation hardware was being
developed but would not be available before April 2020. As Sony explained in its second interview with Wired magazine in October 2019, the company intends to ship the next generation console worldwide by the end of 2020.

The current hardware specifications were
revealed in the same interview. Sony unveiled a new official PlayStation logo at the Consumer Electronics Show in 2020, which is similar in style to the previous PlayStation consoles and brand and follows the same minimalistic style. On March 18, 2020, Cerny presented full details of the product in an online presentation published by Sony and Digital Foundry. Digital Foundry interviewed Cerny in depth and published a “deep dive” of the product on April 2, 2020.

There had been a major game library showcase
planned for June 4, 2020, but the date had been
postponed until June 11 due to the George Floyd protests. This presentation was also the unveiling of the console’s external hardware design which was
shown for the first time at this event.

During the end-of-year holiday period of 2020, Sony is planning to release the PlayStation 5. On September 16, 2020, the date and price of the game were
announced in a game showcase presentation; the release date in Australia, Japan, New Zealand, North America, and South Korea was
announced on November 12, 2020, and the release date for the rest of the world was
confirmed on November 19, 2020.

As a result of the delayed release of PlayStation 5 in India, speculation has
centered around a trademark dispute. The name “PS5” was briefly
trademarked by a different party; eventually the dispute is
resolved and the system is
released in India on February 2, 2021. As of January 22, 2021, the console was
launched in Indonesia. As of May 15, 2021, the system was
launched in China.

With the launch of this console, there were two versions available: a base model with a Blu-ray compatible optical drive for retail game support, along with online distribution via the PlayStation Store, as well as a lower-cost version that did not come with a disc drive, but still supported digital downloads.

After Sony’s presentation on September 16, 2020, it was
announced that pre-orders for the console would open at various retailers on the following day. However, several retailers in the United States and the United Kingdom launched pre-orders that evening, causing a rush on pre-orders, including scalping as many stores’ inventories were rapidly
sold out, and creating confusion in the process. In response to this incident, Sony apologized to the public on September 19, 2020, and promised to increase pre-order deliveries over the coming days as well as stock levels through the end of October.

It has been
estimated that Sony will have a short retail stock of the console by 2023 because of a global shortage of chips. Sony expects the shortage to last until 2020. A price increase of up to 20% was
announced by Sony in August 2022 in most of its markets, except the US, citing global economic, inflationary, and supply chain pressures.

Sony Interactive Entertainment

As the name implies, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is a multinational American video game and digital entertainment company owned by the Japanese multinational conglomerate Sony. The company mainly operates the PlayStation video game console and product line. It is
made up of two legal corporate entities, Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC (SIE LLC), based in San Mateo, California, and Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. (SIE Inc.), based in Minato, Tokyo. The original name of SIE Inc. was Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI or SCE) founded in November 1993 in order to handle Sony’s venture into video game development for the PlayStation. In April 2016, Sony Corporation of America established SIE LLC in San Mateo, and it is now
managed by Sony Corporation of America.

PlayStation has been developing video game consoles, accessories, and services for its home
video game consoles since the original PlayStation console was
released in 1994. It is the company’s intention to expand its operations from Japan to North America and Europe,
where it founded Sony Computer Entertainment America in May 1995 (in Foster City, California)
and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) in July 1995 (in Liverpool). This company quickly became one of Sony’s primary resources for video game research and development as well as interactive entertainment. The Sony Network Entertainment International and Sony Interactive Entertainment divisions were
restructured and reorganized into Sony Interactive Entertainment in April 2016, retaining the primary objectives and operations from both companies. In the same year, SIE LLC was
established with headquarters in San Mateo, California.
