How the Phantom of the Opera ends

Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “How the Phantom of the Opera ends“.

The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera (French: Le Fantôme de l’Opéra) is a novel by French author Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serial in Le Gaulois from 23 September 1909 to 8 January 1910, and was released in volume form in late March 1910 by Pierre Lafitte. The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century, and by an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a former ballet pupil’s skeleton in Carl Maria von Weber’s 1841 production of Der Freischütz. It has been successfully adapted into various stage and film adaptations, most notable of which are the 1925 film depiction featuring Lon Chaney, and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical.

The Phantom of the Opera was written by the French novelist Gaston Leroux, who also authored The Secret of the Night and The Perfume of the Lady in Black, among other works. In the novel, a reclusive genius named Erik who lives beneath the Palais Garnier opera house becomes fixated on Christine Daae, a young soprano. From the shadows, he teaches her to sing, hoping she will one day learn to love him. He is afraid of approaching her openly because his face is disfigured. When Christine falls in love with another man named Raoul, Erik resolves to kill him.

1986 musical

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who co-wrote the libretto alongside Richard Stilgoe) and lyrics by Charles Hart. It is based on the 1910 eponymous French novel by Gaston Leroux.

The plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, masked musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth beneath the Paris Opéra House.

The musical opened in London’s West End in 1986 and on Broadway in New York in 1988. English classical soprano Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webber’s then-wife) was cast as Christine Daaé. This won the 1986 Olivier Award and the 1988 Tony Award for Best Musical, and Michael Crawford (in the title role) won the Olivier and Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Musical. It is currently the longest running show in Broadway history, and celebrated its 10,000th Broadway performance on 11 February 2012, the first production ever to do so.

It is the second longest-running West End musical, after Les Misérables, and the third longest-running West End show overall, after The Mousetrap. A film adaptation directed by Joel Schumacher was released in 2004.

With total estimated worldwide gross receipts of over $6 billion and total Broadway gross of over $1 billion, Phantom was the most financially successful entertainment event until The Lion King surpassed it in 2014. By 2011, it had been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities across 27 countries.

What Happens To Phantom’s Undying Love?

The Phantom of the Opera‘s 25-anniversary version was live-streamed by a new YouTube channel named The Shows Must Go On!, which was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall. Their story is shown in a flashback as Raoul de Chagny, who had a clash with the Phantom recounts the story. Below is The Phantom of the Opera ending explained.

synopsis

The Phantom of the Opera strides towards ending when Phantom participates in the play Don Juan opposite Christine. Christine unmasks the Phantom in from of the audience, revealing his deranged face. This angers him and he cuts off the chandelier and it falls on the audience. Phantom takes Christine to his lair.

Raoul follows the two to try and save Christine from the Phantom. He falls into a flooding chamber and then keeps on falling into the many traps set up by the Phantom. Phantom traps Raoul and then gives Christine a choice. He says that either she can live with the Phantom and allow Raoul to live, or choose the life of liberty while living Raoul to die.

She tells the Phantom that she is not afraid of him and kisses him. This makes the Phantom realise that he wants Christine to be happy and lets the two go. The Phantom then sits in front of the monkey music box and when Christine comes to return him the ring he had given, he sings, “Christine, I love you”.

When the Phantom looks at Christine leaving, he breaks the numerous mirrors with a candle holder. When he hears the hoard of people coming to look for him, he flees in despair. Meg Giry finds the Phantom’s half-mask lying next to the music box.

Christine

Coming back to the life of old Raoul who takes the monkey music box from the auction, he goes to Christine’s grave. He places the box there and sees that the grave has a red rose with black satin tied around it like the Phantom used to give Christine. The ribbon also has the ring which Christine had given to him, which meant that Phantom still lived after all these years.
