Career Beginnings

The band originally formed in 1981 when Lars Ulrich placed an ad in the paper to search for other musicians to play metal music with. In 1981, five months after their initial meeting, Ulrich recruited Hetfield and guitarist James Hetfield. The band was named after Ulrich’s friend Ron Quintana brainstormed names for a fanzine. In 1982, they recorded their first song, ‘Hit The Lights’ for their compilation album ‘Metal Massacre’. A few months later, they opened for the band Saxon during their 1982 tour at Radio City.

Following the recording of Power Metal, the band asked Cliff Burton to join their band after attending a show in which he was performing. He initially declined the offer before accepting it on condition that the band relocated to El Cerrito. When the band signed with Megaforce Record, Johny Zazula funded the recording of their debut album.

In 1983 the band recorded their debut album ‘Metal Up Your Ass’ and decided to eject Mustaine from the band, replacing him with Kirk Hammett. They were renamed ‘Kill ‘Em All’ in 1983 after Mustaine expressed his belief that Hammett had stolen his job. Their second album, ‘Ride the Lightning’, was released in 1984. It did not generate financial success initially, but earned the band some buzz. Following a concert, Elektra Records’ director signed the band.

Breakthrough in career

With ‘…And Justice For All’, Metallica achieved commercial success in 1988, reaching number six on the charts. With only nine weeks after its initial release, the album achieved platinum status. The band embarked on the ‘Damaged Justice’ tour to promote it. The band was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1989.

Despite their efforts, the band lost to Jethro Tull, an upset that has gone down in Grammy history as one of the biggest fan upsets in the history of the award. The band developed a remixed version of their song ‘One’ that was featured on MTV.

Metalica began recording their next album in 1990, which came out the following year and debuted at number one. It was certified platinum and accompanied by a 14-month tour. A pyrotechnic setup issue caused Hetfield to suffer burns in 1992.

Despite going on a brief tour in 1995, the band returned to the recording studio in 1994. After releasing the album Load in 1996, the band released Reload in 1997 which was promoted by the band’s appearance on Saturday Night Live. Garage Inc. was released in 1998.

21 century

As Metallica discovered that their entire catalog of music was available on Napster in 2000, they became involved in the file sharing controversy. After the band filed a lawsuit, Napster agreed to block users who shared music without artist permission. In 2001, Newsted left the band for private, personal reasons. Hetfield went to rehab the same year due to drug and alcohol abuse. The band returned to the studio in 2002. In 2003, they released their eighth album, ‘St. Anger,’ which debuted at number one but received mixed reviews. In 2004, they won a Grammy Award for the album’s title track. Metalica was featured in the documentary film ‘Metallica: Some Kind of Monster’ around this time. It detailed the making of their album ‘St. Anger’ and revealed the internal conflict and difficulties the band was facing.

When the band started working on a new album in 2008, it leaked ten days early. The album, ‘Death Magnetic’ debuted at number one and made the band the first to debut five consecutive studio albums at number one in a row. In 2010 the band finished touring for more than two years to promote their new album. In the same year, they released an EP featuring their Australian performances. A follow-up EP was released later that year, called ‘Six Feet Down Under (Part II).’ In 2011, the band played a number of shows and festivals with other big four bands. Due to tension between Lou Reed and Lars Ulrich, the album ‘Lulu’ was problematic to record.
