Career of Rylan Clark

Career beginnings

During the course of his early modelling career, Clark took up the stage name “Rylan”, which he chose from the R section of a baby name book in a branch of WHSmith when he was 16 years old. This was the name he adopted during his early modelling career. A year ago, he applied for Big Brother 8, but when he was about to go in, it was leaked to the press, which took it from me. “It was devastating.” He was a member of several Take That and Westlife tribute bands in Ibiza at the time, and was also part of the Spanish boy band 4bidden until 2010.

During 2010 he appeared in four episodes of the BBC series John Bishop’s Britain. He then won the Sky Living modeling series Signed by Katie Price in 2011 and 2012.

The X Factor

In May 2012, Clark auditioned for the ninth series of The X Factor at The O2 Arena in London in front of Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow, Tulisa, and guest judge Rita Ora. It was a dance performance of Des’ree’s song “Kissing You” that he performed in front of the judges. After the performance, Barlow commented: “Ryan, I like the personality, I dislike your voice, as well as the strange song choice you selected.” Walsh admitted that he was “a bit worried.” Barlow had given Clark a “no” but Ora, Tulisa and Walsh all decided to put him through bootcamp.

In bootcamp, Clark and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger, both of whom were judges at the time, sang the Pussycat Dolls’ song, “Don’t Cha.” After his performance, Barlow admitted: “I think he’s going to haunt me throughout this competition.” Barlow was reluctant to send Clark through to judges’ houses, however, the other three judges were in favour of him advancing. As a result, Clark was placed into the Boys category by Scherzinger as his mentor.

It was at the judges’ houses in Dubai where he sang a stripped-down rendition of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” in front of Scherzinger and Ne-Yo. After putting Clark through to the live shows as one of her final three acts, in addition to James Arthur and Jahméne Douglas, Scherzinger told him: “Rylan, it’s such an enormous risk… but I have to take it, and you are in my final three,” and he began to break down in a terrible way.

then…

Clark sang “Gold” by Spandau Ballet in the first week of the live shows, and was placed in the bottom two with Carolynne Poole the following night. Scherzinger voted to save Clark, since he was her act, while Barlow and Tulisa voted to save Poole, based on her final performance in the showdown. In the end, Walsh, who had the casting vote, voted to save him, moving the result into a deadlock; in that case, Clark, who had received more public vote than Poole, was saved, much to the disgust of Barlow, who stormed off stage and later called Clark a “joke act” and a “talentless guy”.

During week two, Clark continued to irritate Barlow by performing a part of Barlow’s “Back for Good” and then claiming he had booked him a cab in advance in case he stormed off stage again, and Barlow responded with the following: “That’s funny, I’ve been waiting for your cab for two weeks.” On the basis of public vote, he was advanced to week three that week. It was during week five that he was again in the bottom two with Kye Sones, but he was saved by the public vote.

after that…

The result of this was that Barlow and Walsh voted to eliminate Clark, while Scherzinger and Tulisa, who had the casting vote, voted to eliminate Sones. Due to the casting vote, Tulisa sent the result to a deadlock, and Sones was
eliminated. During week 7, Clark revealed on The Xtra Factor that he had been
told by his psychic that he would make it to week 7 before leaving the competition, but the following night, the public voted for him to advance to the quarterfinal, which he then lost to the judges in week 8, and only Scherzinger saved him from Union J’s elimination.

Celebrity Big Brother

A housemate of Celebrity Big Brother in January 2013, Clark entered the Big Brother House for the eleventh time. He was the second celebrity to enter the House. On the launch night, Clark and Italian jockey Frankie Dettori selected which celebrities would join them in the House and which would be
banished to the Basement. After the live final on 25 January, it was
revealed that despite the fact that he was staying in the Big Brother House throughout the series contrary to the show’s rule of staying in the house, he had been leaving the house each Sunday to rehearse for the X Factor tour, which began a day after the live final. In the live final, Clark was
announced as the winner along with Neil Ruddock, Claire Richards, Ryan Moloney, Heidi Montag, and Spencer Pratt. Clark broke down in tears after he was
announced as the winner.

Personal life

As far back as September 2014, Clark became engaged to Big Brother 14 housemate Dan Neal,
and on November 7, 2015 they were
married. In June 2021, it was
announced that after six years of marriage, the couple had separated. Clark had a breakdown at the end of the relationship and was
forced to take four months off work – as well as being
hospitalized for a period of time. In an interview with Fearne Cotton for a podcast, Clark told a reporter, “I completely shut down. I wouldn’t eat. At some point, I couldn’t even speak, which for some people might prove quite useful. My speech was just
slurred. My mother thought I was having a stroke, but my body just stopped working. I dropped to 9 pounds and am six feet four inches tall.”

In Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, Clark lives with his wife and children.
