on august 18, 1952, Patrick Wayne Swayze was born in Houston, Texas, as the second child of Patsy Swayze (née Karnes; 1927–2013), a dancer, choreographer, and dance instructor, and Jesse Wayne Swayze (1925–1982), a draftsman for engineering. His older sister Vickie (1949–1994), two younger brothers, actors Don (born 1958) and Sean (born 1962), and a younger sister, Bambi, adopted in 1966, were all younger brothers. The paternal ancestor of Swayze’s grandfather was the Englishman John Swasey (1619–1706), who lived in Bridport in Dorset. Between 1620 and 1640, Swasey traveled aboard the Recovery, a Puritan ship that eventually reached the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was married to Katherine Kinge from Essex during the Puritan migration to New England. They had seven children, including Samuel Swayze, a judge. He became one of the first to use the spelling Swayze.

As a teenager, Swayze lived in Houston’s Oak Forest neighborhood, where he attended St. Rose of Lima Catholic School, Oak Forest Elementary School, Black Middle School, Waltrip High School, and San Jacinto College Central. As of June 12, 1975, Swayze had been married to Lisa Niemi for 34 years. There were no children between them, but Lisa had suffered one miscarriage. They met when Swayze was 18, when he was taking dance lessons from his mother. When Niemi was 14 years of age, she was taking dance lessons from Swayze’s mother. As Swayze stated in 2008, it was Niemi who inspired him to write his 1987 song “She’s Like the Wind.”
In 1989, Swayze said, “I have always felt that there was something different in there (my personality), but I was afraid to look. I have always been afraid to look because I fear I won’t find anything. As a result of this fear, I got interested in Soka Gakkai Buddhism. I later studied EST, I went to therapy, and I practiced transcendental meditation. I was trying to support that side of me. But, you know, in Texas, there isn’t much support for that part of you. I finally found what I was looking for in the Soka Gakkai tradition of Buddhist practice.” Swayze said he loved looking into various belief systems and faiths, how it matters to other people, and how respecting other religious teachings is important to him.

He was a licensed pilot with an instrument rating from the FAA. He made the news on June 1, 2000, when he flew with his dogs from Van Nuys, California, to Las Vegas, New Mexico, in his twin-engined Cessna 414 N414PS. As a result of a problem with the pressurization of his plane, Swayze landed his plane on a dirt road in a housing complex in Prescott Valley, Arizona, as a precautionary measure. The plane’s right wing struck a light pole, however, he was unaffected. Swayze appeared to be extremely intoxicated and asked for help in removing evidence from the crash site, namely an open bottle of wine and a 30-pack of beer.
He made himself unavailable to the police for several hours following the crash, according to the police report. It was later determined that the alcohol in question was not in the cabin, but stored in external storage compartments inaccessible during flight. In late December 2007, just after filming the pilot episode of The Beast, Swayze suffered a burning sensation in his stomach. This was
caused by a blockage in his bile ducts. After three weeks, he was
diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer at Stanford University Medical Center. He underwent chemotherapy, as well as experimental drug treatment with vatalanib, at Stanford University Medical Center. The doctors had hoped this would cut off the tumor’s blood supply.
Swayze’s doctor confirmed that the actor has been
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but insisted that he wasn’t as close to death as reports suggested. On March 5, 2008, a Reuters article reported that he “has a limited amount of disease, and he appears to be responding well to treatment so far.” While it was

operated on to remove part of his stomach because his cancer had spread. It was also
reported that he rewrote his will, transferring his property to his wife. Swayze stated in a statement on May 28 that he continued to respond well to his treatment at Stanford University Medical Center. Earlier in May of 2008, he appeared at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, his first public appearance since his diagnosis. According to reports, he said “My treatments are working, and I am winning the battle against this disease.” in June 2008.
The late actor appeared on the ABC, NBC, and CBS simulcasts of Stand Up to Cancer in September 2008 to appeal to the general public for donations to support the initiative. Swayze said to a standing ovation, “I dream that the word ‘cure’ will no longer be
followed by the words ‘it’s impossible.’ Together, we can make a world where cancer no longer means living with fear, without hope, or worse.” After the show ended, Swayze remained onstage and talked to other cancer patients; executive producer Laura Ziskin (herself battling advanced breast cancer, which claimed her own life) commented, “He said a beautiful thing: ‘I’m just an individual living with cancer.’ That’s how he wants to be thought of. He’s in a fight, but he’s a fighter.” On December 2, 2008, Swayze denied tabloid claims that the cancer had spread to his liver.

As part of a January 2009 interview with Barbara Walters, Swayze admitted to having a “tiny little mass” in his liver, but told Walters that he wanted the media to report that he was “kicking it.” When Walters asked him if he was using any holistic or alternative methods of treatment besides chemotherapy, Swayze replied that he was using some Chinese herbs as treatment. hospitalized with pneumonia, which was a complication of chemotherapy for his cancer. He was
released from the hospital on January 16, 2009, and finally returned to his home with his wife to recuperate. On April 19, 2009, doctors informed Swayze that the cancer had again metastasized to his liver. Swayze had been a smoker for 40 years, and at one point he talked about smoking 60 cigarettes a day. In his statement, he stated that his chain smoking probably influenced the development of his cancer, and he continued to smoke cigarettes during treatment for the disease.
Sadly, he passed away on September 14, 2009, at the age of 57, with his family by his side. Although he had been
diagnosed with cancer 20 months previously, it was
confirmed by Swayze’s publicist that he had died of pancreatic cancer. His body was
