‘Sonic the Hedgehog’: Why Tails’ surprise cameo is big as the ‘remarkable’ journey continues
Sonic is not alone on Earth.
The lonely alien Sega video game star of “Sonic the Hedgehog,” seemingly stuck alone on Earth, did not see the arrival of his best friend Miles “Tails” Prower in the movie. It was the briefest of appearances.
But it was major deal for “Sonic,” one of the few film success stories of 2020 and a wild ride that continues on digital, with the upcoming Blu-ray release May 19.
There will surely be other movies featuring other characters like Tails as “Sonic the Hedgehog” has moved from possible flop to more like a franchise.
“No doubt ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ is just getting started. A sequel is imminent for Paramount Studios, who desperately needs new franchises,” says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “I’d expect an announcement as soon as the world starts spinning in a direction we all recognize again. Video game adaptations are definitely hot properties again in Hollywood thanks to Sonic and his box office antics.”
‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ near Twitter-death:Saved by dramatic, game-saving redesign
To recap the antics: Filmmakers endured a near fan revolt when they first unveiled the classic Sega video game character a year ago (April 30). Fans hated it, so they delayed the film’s release to completely overhaul the character, and released the revised “Sonic” in February. The movie rocked the box office for $306 million worldwide — just before theaters shuttered due to the coronavirus.
on digital 46 days after release for stuck
Paramount Studios released “Sonic” on digital 46 days after release for stuck-at-home families. Paramount has not reported the digital sales, but all this foretells new movies involving other characters from the Sega Universe. Like Tails.
“There’s so many more great characters to bring in and just more stories to tell,” says director Jeff Fowler, who calls the “Sonic” saga a “remarkable journey.” He insists that there are no official talks or plans for a sequel.
“(But) nothing would bring me more happiness than getting another shot with these characters and to tell more stories. We’d love to do more with the Sonic cinematic universe,” he says.
Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose and Shadow
Sonic has a number of friends: Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose and Shadow, who appeared in the game and 1993-94 ABC TV show “Sonic the Hedgehog” and the 2014-17 Cartoon Network series, “Sonic Boom.” Fans have pondered what role they would play in the movie.
“We would get that question a lot from fans, ‘Is Tails in it? Is Knuckles in it?’ All these fan-favorite characters,” says Fowler. “We had to do that little fan Easter egg with Tails and say, ‘We know you love these characters. We will absolutely get to them in future stories if we’re able to.’ “
But the first film dealt with Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) coming up against his nemesis, Dr. Robotnik (voiced by Jim Carrey).
“We had to get Sonic and Robotnik right,” says Fowler
“And we build from there.”
In the brief movie appearance, Tails was voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who voiced the double-tailed fox in “Sonic Boom.” Major bonus for the character: The filmmakers unveiled the new character to happy gasps in theaters, rather than the online dismay for that met the original Sonic. They have learned their character lesson.
“We cracked the ‘Sonic’ code. Once you establish the template of Sonic, there’s definitely an aesthetic then you can kind of apply to the other other characters,” says Fowler. “We had a guide to figuring out characters like Tails.”
Sonic the Hedgehog (character)
Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ Sonikku za Hejjihoggu ?) is a video game character and the protagonist of a series of video games released by Sega, as well as numerous spin-off comics, cartoons and books. The first game in the franchise was released in 1991 in order to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo‘s flagship character Mario. Since then, Sonic has become one of the world’s best-known video game characters, with his series having sold over 44 million copies.
Artist Naoto Ōshima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka are generally credited with the creation of the character, a blue, male, anthropomorphic hedgehog, whose ability to run faster than the speed of sound is a major part of the gameplay of the series. He is 15 years old, and, as a hedgehog, is significantly shorter and lighter than humans his age, being about 100 centimeters (3 ft 3 in) tall and weighing 35 kilograms (77 lb).
In April 1990, Sega did request a game capable of selling over one million copies and a character to replace Alex Kidd as the company’s mascot. Several character designs were submitted by its AM8 research & development department, including an armadillo .
Sonic started his battle against his nemesis Doctor Eggman in the 1991 platform game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Master System and Game Gear. His sidekick Miles “Tails” Prower joined him in the game’s 1992 sequel Sonic 2, which also introduced Sonic’s Super Sonic form and signature “spin-dash” move.
There have been several animated television series featuring Sonic. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog was the first and featured Sonic, voiced by Jaleel White, and Robotnik, voiced by Long John Baldry.
It had a very comical take on Sonic’s adventures and battles with Robotnik. Sonic the Hedgehog, originally broadcast on Saturdays on ABC.
Books and comics
Sonic’s first comic appearance was in a promotional comic printed in Disney Adventures magazine, which established an origin for Sonic involving the transformation of kindly scientist Dr Ovi Kintobor into the evil Dr Ivo Robotnik. It also shockingly established that Sonic was originally Brown.
Sonic has proven to be an extremely popular character. After having been around only 3 years, he had already surpassed Nintendo’s Mario in popularity according to a June 1993 Q-Survey in Gameplayers magazine. As a result of this popularity,
The earliest voice of Sonic was Takeshi Kusao in the game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, a June 1993 arcade release starring Sonic the Hedgehog, Mighty the Armadillo, and Ray the Flying Squirrel.
In September 1993, DiC Entertainment cast Jaleel White, more popularly known as portraying the character of Steve Urkel, as Sonic in their simultaneously released shows Sonic the Hedgehog and Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. White would later be cast as Sonic for DiC’s 1999 show Sonic Underground.
In Sonic & Knuckles, a mural deep in Angel Island’s Hidden Palace fortells the battle between Super Sonic and Eggman for the Master Emerald that would occur in the game’s Doomsday Zone. Knuckles initially misread the mural to mean that Eggman would protect the Master Emerald from a villainous Sonic.
