Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “the physical expression of genes.”.
The physical expression of a gene is called phenotype. It represents the way we see an organism from outside.
Phenotype
= A phenotype is an individual’s observable traits, such as height, eye color, and blood type. The genetic contribution to the phenotype is called the genotype. Some traits are largely determined by the genotype, while other traits are largely determined by environmental factors.
Gene expression is the process by which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product that enables it to produce end products, protein or non-coding RNA, and ultimately affect a phenotype, as the final effect.
Two alleles for a given gene in a diploid organism are expressed and interact to produce physical characteristics. The observable traits expressed by an organism are referred to as its phenotype.
Gene expression is the process by which the instructions in our DNA are converted into a functional product, such as a protein. … It acts as both an on/off switch to control when proteins are made and also a volume control that increases or decreases the amount of proteins made.
Gene expression is the process the cell uses to produce the molecule it needs by reading the genetic code written in the DNA. To do this, the cell interprets the genetic code, and for each group of three letters it adds one of the 20 different amino acids that are the basic units needed to build proteins.
Prokaryotic gene expression (both transcription and translation) occurs within the cytoplasm of a cell due to the lack of a defined nucleus; thus, the DNA is freely located within the cytoplasm. Eukaryotic gene expression occurs in both the nucleus (transcription) and cytoplasm (translation).
Within an individual organism, the specific combination of alleles for a gene is known as the genotype of the organism, and (as mentioned above) the physical trait associated with that genotype is called the phenotype of the organism.
Phenotypic expression is the result of a complex interplay between an organism’s genes and its environment. During growth and development, organisms undergo a programmed series of phenotypic changes. Phenotypic expression thus varies throughout growth and development, even when the environment in homogenous and static.
But modern jargon of molecular biologists is just this: gene expression in their language is a synonym for mRNA expression. However, one may use term “protein expression”, which means unequivocally amount of protein, and which also does not reflect protein function .
By gene expression we mean the transcription of a gene into mRNA and its subsequent translation into protein. Gene expression is primarily controlled at the level of transcription, largely as a result of binding of proteins to specific sites on DNA.
gene expression. the activation or “turning on” of a gene that results in transcription and the production of mRNA. genome. the complete genetic material contained in an individual. structural gene.
We find that in individual cells, most protein-coding genes are expressed at levels between 1 and ∼50 copies per cell. The distribution suggests a roughly equal number of genes at each level except for a larger group of transcripts with fractional transcript-per-cell values.
The term “phenotype” refers to the observable physical properties of an organism; these include the organism’s appearance, development, and behavior. An organism’s phenotype is determined by its genotype, which is the set of genes the organism carries, as well as by environmental influences upon these genes.
constitutive genes
always expressed
– E.g. Ribosomal proteins, tRNAs, RNA polymerase, glycolysis enzymes – These are called constitutive genes. Other genes are made only at certain times or in certain conditions.
The F1 plants were crossed and the results are in the table: What conclusions about the physical relationship between the traits can be drawn from the experiment? The traits are probably linked. Which of the following statements about mitosis are correct?
Differential gene expression, commonly abbreviated as DG or DGE analysis refers to the analysis and interpretation of differences in abundance of gene transcripts within a transcriptome
Even cells in a multicellular organism need to respond to developmental cues such as signalling molecules to determine when to divide, migrate or die. The production of new proteins in response to external stimuli results largely from rapid activation of gene transcription — this is known as inducible gene expression.
Only a fraction of the genes in a cell are expressed at any one time. The variety of gene expression profiles characteristic of different cell types arise because these cells have distinct sets of transcription regulators.
A phenotypic trait, the expression of genes in an observable way, is an obvious and measurable trait. The phenotype is variable depending on the genetic makeup of the organism and also influenced by the surroundings to which the organism is subjected across its morphogenesis, including various epigenetic processes.
Epigenetics has been defined as ‘the study of mitotically (and potentially meiotically) heritable alterations in gene expression that are not caused by changes in DNA sequence’ (Waterland, 2006).
Environment Can Impact Phenotype
Environmental factors such as diet, temperature, oxygen levels, humidity, light cycles, and the presence of mutagens can all impact which of an animal’s genes are expressed, which ultimately affects the animal’s phenotype.
(HOH-moh-ZY-gus JEE-noh-tipe) The presence of two identical alleles at a particular gene locus. A homozygous genotype may include two normal alleles or two alleles that have the same variant.
The genotype refers to the genetic material passed between generations, and the phenotype is observable characteristics or traits of an organism.
(HEH-teh-roh-ZY-gus JEE-noh-tipe) The presence of two different alleles at a particular gene locus. A heterozygous genotype may include one normal allele and one mutated allele or two different mutated alleles (compound heterozygote).
Gene-expression sentence example
Various factors, including genetic makeup, exposure to harmful substances, other environmental influences, and age, can affect expressivity.
Gene expression has two stages. It is the process by which DNA directs the synthesis of proteins and, in some cases, just RNA’s. it occurs in two stages, transcription and translation.
1. Trans-acting molecules (specific transcription factors)
Trans-acting molecules (specific transcription factors)
Cis-acting regulatory elements.
Regulation by co- and postrancriptional processing of mRNA.
Regulation through modifications to DNA.
Some simple examples of where gene expression is important are: Control of insulin expression so it gives a signal for blood glucose regulation. X chromosome inactivation in female mammals to prevent an “overdose” of the genes it contains. Cyclin expression levels control progression through the eukaryotic cell cycle.
Gene expression is the process by which. information from a gene is used in the synthesis of. a functional gene product. These products are often. proteins, but in non-protein coding genes such as.
Plant gene expression, in response to stress cues, is tightly controlled by transcriptional regulators. Posttranslational modifications are a key mechanism to control the activities of transcription factors (TFs). In this context, the redox regulation of TF function is emerging as an important theme.
Regulation of gene expression refers to the control of the amount and timing of the appearance of the functional product of a gene. According to Central Dogma, DNA can undergo replication to form DNA and transcription to form RNA. RNA can undergo replication to form RNA and translation to form a protein.
