Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “is google better than bing“.

Microsoft Bing

Microsoft Bing (commonly known as Bing) is a web search engine owned and operated by Microsoft. The service has its origins in Microsoft’s previous search engines: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing provides a variety of search services, including web, video, image and map search products. It is developed using ASP.NET.

Bing, Microsoft’s replacement for Live Search, was unveiled by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on May 28, 2009, at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego, California, for release on June 3, 2009. Notable new features at the time included the listing of search suggestions while queries are entered and a list of related searches (called “Explore pane”) based on semantic technology from Powerset, which Microsoft had acquired in 2008.

In July 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search. Yahoo! finished the transition in 2012.

In October 2011, Microsoft stated that they were working on new back-end search infrastructure with the goal of delivering faster and slightly more relevant search results for users. Known as “Tiger”, the new index-serving technology had been incorporated into Bing globally since August that year. In May 2012, Microsoft announced another redesign of its search engine that includes “Sidebar”, a social feature that searches users’ social networks for information relevant to the search query.

The BitFunnel search engine indexing algorithm and various components of the search engine were made open source by Microsoft in 2016.

As of October 2018, (Microsoft) Bing is the third largest search engine globally, with a query volume of 4.58%, behind Google (77%) and Baidu (14.45%). Yahoo! Search, which Bing largely powers, has 2.63%.

Which One is the best?

When you think about search engines, the first thing that might come to your mind is Google. However, there are many different search engines from around the world such as Baidu (China) and Yandex (Russia) among others. In this review, we will be taking an in-depth look at the Bing vs Google main features that each search engine offers.

Fortunately, search engines have transformed how people try to find their information. While all search engines feel and look similar they,  however, aren’t. It’s without a doubt that Google and Bing are the most renowned search engines across the world.

So far,  many western countries have adopted Google as their preferred search engine. This doesn’t mean that Bing is less worth your time. As such, Bing has invested much effort to keep up with this big giant.

However, is the Microsoft search engine advanced enough that it poses a huge threat to Google? Let’s find out.

Introducing the Contenders

You may be familiar with these two search engines, but as a refresher, let’s look at what they are.

About Bing

Bing.com search engine was created by Microsoft and originally in 2006. It was known as Windows Live Search before it got a full rebranding in 2009 to Bing. Initially, Windows Live Search was launched to compete against Google’s Search engine.

After Bing was launched, their initial and big update was called “Tiger”.  And this introduced their initial indexing technology. It’s worth noting that when compared to Google, Bing.com does not frequently update their algorithm. This is crucial because a change in the algorithm can affect your website’s ranking. Thus such changes should be made accordingly.

About Google

This search engine was created in 1998 by a search firm, with the main focus being on analyzing backlinks authority. With time Google has grown to offer more than 50 internet services. And today, it’s used by 70 percent of the world in doing their internet searches.

Its initial service (i.e. backlinks) has helped propel Google to where it is today, the industry leader. When compared to Bing, Google changes its algorithm more frequently.  This ranges from huge updates to small changes. As a result, this ensures that Google’s search engine page remains the best it can be.

Google vs. Microsoft Bing Market Share

One of the first distinctions between Microsoft Bing and Google is market share. According to Statista, in February 2021, Bing accounted for 6.7% of the global search market, while Google took 86.6%.

That’s pretty huge.

And while that may make it tempting to focus on Google alone, Microsoft Bing provides good conversions and has a user base that shouldn’t be ignored.

That 6.7% of search users accounts for millions who use Microsoft Bing every day.

It’s particularly important to optimize for Bing if you’re targeting an American audience. In fact, one-third of online queries in the U.S. are powered by Microsoft properties when you factor in Yahoo and voice searches.

Some have wondered over the years whether Bing is an acronym for “Because It’s Not Google.” I’m not sure how true that is, but the name does come from a campaign in the early 1990s for its predecessor, Live Search.

Another fun tidbit is that Ahrefs recently did a study on the Top 100 Bing searches globally and the #1 query searched was [Google].

How Google & Microsoft Bing Differ in Size of Index and Crawling

Google says:

“The Google Search index contains hundreds of billions of webpages and is well over 100,000,000 gigabytes in size.”

Even so, not even Google can crawl the entire web. That is just not going to happen.

This is why using structured data is so important. It provides a data feed about your content so Google can understand it better, which can help you qualify for rich results and get more clicks and impressions.

Microsoft Bing hasn’t released similar figures. However, this search engine index size estimating website puts the Microsoft Bing index at somewhere between 8 to 14 billion web pages.

The two engines have shared a little about their approaches to web indexing.

Microsoft Bing says:

“Bingbot uses an algorithm to determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site. The goal is to minimize bingbot crawl footprint on your web sites while ensuring that the freshest content is available.”

Around the same time the above statement was made, John Mueller from Google said:

“I think the hard part here is that we don’t crawl URLs with the same frequency all the time. So some URLs we will crawl daily. Some URLs maybe weekly. Other URLs every couple of months, maybe even every once half year or so. So this is something that we try to find the right balance for, so that we don’t overload your server.”

Google has a mobile-first index, while Microsoft Bing takes a different stance and does not have plans to apply a mobile-first indexing policy.

Instead, Microsoft Bing maintains a single index that is optimized for both desktop and mobile, so it is important to make sure your site experience is optimized, loads quickly, and gives users what they need.

Google has evolved into more than just a search engine with products like Gmail, Maps, Chrome OS, Android OS, YouTube, and more.

Microsoft Bing also offers email via Outlook, as well as other services like Office Online or OneDrive.

Unlike Google, however, it does not have its own operating system. Instead, it uses Windows Phone 8 or iOS on Apple devices.

Now, let’s take a look at where Bing is on par with Google – or superior.

1. Is Bing Better Than Google?

Bing’s results led to a Lifehacker analysis. It leaned toward Bing having certain superiorities, such as its apparent “ability to predict when a flight might increase in price.” This analysis was from, oh, 2013. The second result was “5 Things Bing Does Better Than Google.” Some bias here, perhaps?

But when I asked Google the same question, the same outdated Lifehacker article came up first. Moreover, it was in a large box, beginning with this sentence: “Bing’s video search is significantly better than Google’s. This is the biggest difference between the two (and why Bing has a bit of a reputation as ‘the porn search engine’).” I’d missed out on that. Had you?

The second result was a 2018 Wired story entitled: “I Ditched Google For Bing. Here’s What I Found — and What I Didn’t.” No bias there, it seemed. Indeed, it was only the ninth result that offered a favorably Googly Forbes 2016 headline: “Why Hasn’t Bing Improved To Become Better Than Google?”

2. Is Google Better Than Bing?

Surely this would produce different results. Not on Bing. The very same Lifehacker article still dominated. In the next result, Bing offered me: “How and Why To Switch From Google To Bing.” It was only the fourth result that offered: “10 Reasons Why Google Is Still Better Than Bing.”

Oddly, Google offered me the same first two results as for the previous question. It was only the third result that came from a 2015 Medium article: “Why Google Is Better Than Bing and It’s Likely To Continue That Way.” It was time for a more qualitative question.

3. How Do You Judge Which Search Engine Is Better?

Well, it seemed like an objectively qualitative question. Stunningly, Bing threw up a bunch of videos, none of which even attempted to answer the question. Sample: “lemonsworld Episode #46. How To Sneak Your V8 Miata Past The Lemons.”

Excuse me? How on earth could this have been even vaguely relevant? Oh, it was about engines, right? Bing, you need help.

This is where Google’s response was markedly different. Its first result: “17 Ways Search Engines Judge The Value of a Link.” Useful, you might think, even if it doesn’t exactly answer the question. What was less useful was that the article was from 2009. The next result? “How Google Judges Quality and What You Should Do About It.” This was from 2015 and certainly didn’t answer my question. I was becoming a touch confused. Was either of these search engines any good?

Thank you for staying with this post “is google better than bing” until the end.
