Hello. Welcome to solsarin. This post is about “who wrote ‘leaves of grass’?”.
Leaves of Grass is the title of the first book of poems published by Walt Whitman in 1855. It is also the title of the last book of poems published by Whitman before his death in 1892, and of five other editions published during his life.
This resulted in vastly different editions over four decades—the first edition being a small book of twelve poems, and the last, a compilation of over 400.
Whitman
Whitman published the first edition of Leaves of Grass in 1855. He produced varied editions of the work ending with the ninth, or “deathbed” edition, in 1891–1892. What began as a slim book of 12 poems was by the end of his life a thick compendium of almost 400.
The title Leaves of Grass is a pun. “Grass” was a term given by publishers to works of minor value, and “leaves” is another name for the pages on which they were printed. Leaves of Grass, front cover. Whitman designed the green cloth cover and typeset and paid for the printing of the book himself.
Leaves of Grass, collection of poetry by American author Walt Whitman, first presented as a group of 12 poems published anonymously in 1855. It was followed by five revised and three reissued editions during the author’s lifetime.
The verse collection Leaves of Grass is Walt Whitman’s best-known work. He revised and added to the collection throughout his life, producing ultimately nine editions. The poems were written in a new form of free verse and contained controversial subject matter for which they were censured.
Season 4. Gale Boetticher had given Walt a copy of Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, a collection of poems, which has been seen several times since. Prior to giving this gift, Boetticher, an avid Whitman fan, recites “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”, one of the poems found in Leaves of Grass
$305,000
A first edition of ”Leaves of Grass,” printed for the author, sold for $305,000. That was more than twice Christie’s estimate of $100,000 to $150,000, and it marked a world auction record for Whitman.
More Editions
Whitman rearranged the poems in the 1867 edition to emphasize themes of social cohesion and unity, relevant in the years of post-war Reconstruction. Whitman had seen the suffering of victims of the Civil War first-hand and with his pen he strove to guide the nation back toward its ideals.
His occupations during his lifetime included printer, schoolteacher, reporter, and editor. Whitman’s self-published Leaves of Grass was inspired in part by his travels through the American frontier and by his admiration for Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Whitman was compelled to travel south from New York to find his younger brother George, who had been wounded in the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862. Seeing George in a military hospital gravely affected the poet.

twelve poems
As Leaves of Grass grew through its five subsequent editions into a hefty book of 389 poems (with the addition of the two annexes), it gained much in variety and complexity, but Whitman’s distinctive voice was never stronger, his vision never clearer, and his design never more improvisational than in the twelve poems
As the poet meditated on his poetry, a phantom, beautiful but terrible, the muse of ancient poets, appeared before him. The spirit asked him about the themes of his poetry and asserted that it is “the theme of War, the fortune of battles,/The making of perfect soldiers,” which are the proper themes for poets.
(i) What is uniquely American about Whitman’s poetry? Ans. Whitman wrote about America, its people, and its landscape in expansive free-verse form. He established a uniquely American voice in poetry, entirely separate from the Anglophile-inspired reverence for English poetic styles and forms.
Pleurisy
Walt Whitman / Cause of death
After Whitman died, a three-hour autopsy was performed on his body. Doctors concluded the cause of death was “… pleurisy of the left side, consumption of the right lung, general military tuberculosis and parenchymatous nephritis.” Not an uncommon fate for someone in this time and place.
The most famous poem by Dickinson, “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” is ranked among the greatest poems in the English language. It metaphorically describes hope as a bird that rests in the soul, sings continuously and never demands anything even in the direst circumstances.
Perhaps the most obvious stylistic trait of Whitman’s poetry is the long line, written in free verse. Whitman abandons, almost completely, the metrical tradition of accentual syllabic verse and embraces instead the prosody of the English Bible.
Located about five miles from Philadelphia, Harleigh Cemetery is home to the tomb of American poet and transcendentalist Walt Whitman (1819-1892), who designed the burial site himself. The cemetery is open Monday through Saturday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
NissimEzekiel was born in December 1924, of fairly orthodox Jewish parents who became liberal Jewish. He was educated first in an English-medium school in Bombay, then a Presbyterian College (Wilson College) up to his B.A. His education in English led to the neglect and finally the loss of his mother tongue, Marathi.
Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the low 30’s and during dry spells the maximum temperatures often exceed 40 °C (104 °F) during May and June. Winter tends to last for only about two and a half months, with seasonal lows dipping to 9 °C – 11 °C (48.2 °F – 51.8 °F) between December and January.
At the front of the book, Gale wrote the words “To my other favorite W.W. It’s an honour working with you. Fondly, G.B.” How we discover this is most interesting: Hank sees the book sitting near the toilet in the Whites’ bathroom. That Walt would be this careless goes to show how far he has come.
In the final scene, Hank figures out that Walt is Heisenberg while perusing Walt’s copy of “Leaves of Grass” on the toilet. It’s an honor working with you.
Firstly, Walt loved to be Heisenberg and he was extremely flattered by the opinion Gale had about him. Secondly, the probability of connecting the book with his ‘other occupation’ was extremely low. So he decided to keep the book at home to gloat over it while sitting on the toilet.
Brooklyn
In 1822, when Walt was 2 years old, the Whitman family moved to Brooklyn, which was still a small town. Whitman would spend most of the next 40 years of his life in Brooklyn, which grew into a thriving city during that time.
Emily Dickinson Is A Transcendentalist
Transcendentalist is a philosophy that was started in the early 19th century. Walt Whitman, Ralph Emerson, and David Thoreau are some of the more popular writers of this movement.
He then used parts of it on the cover of his next edition of Leaves of Grass, which in 1856 included new poems of a more erotic nature.
In 1855, he self-published Leaves of Grass, which carried his picture but not his name. He revised the book many times, constantly adding and rewriting poems.
In Whitman’s poem, we keep all these interpretations of grass side by side as the poem continues to accumulate. Grass as the flag of the spirit, grass as evidence of the presence of God, grass as child, grass as a signature of democracy, that which grows among all sorts, all classes, all colors, all types.
After the Civil War, Walt Whitman realized that the American people were in need of their own identity. Therefore, he wrote the book “Leaves of Grass” with the goal of creating a literature piece that was authentic and organic to the United States in every sense.

This short poem is a reassertion of the poet’s faith in the destiny of the American nation. It demonstrates his love of the masses, his devotion to democracy, and his belief that in responding to the call of a democratic process, America is fulfilling a spiritual need of her people.
