Pizza

Pizza is a dish of Italian origin consisting of a usually round, flat base of leavened wheat-based dough topped with tomatoes, cheese, and often various other ingredients (such as various types of sausage, anchovies, mushrooms, onions, olives, vegetables, meat, ham, etc.), which is then baked at a high temperature, traditionally in a wood-fired oven. A small pizza is sometimes called a pizzetta. A person who makes pizza is known as a pizzaiolo.

In Italy, pizza served in a restaurant is presented unsliced, and is eaten with the use of a knife and fork. In casual settings, however, it is cut into wedges to be eaten while held in the hand.

The term pizza was first recorded in the 10th century in a Latin manuscript from the Southern Italian town of Gaeta in Lazio, on the border with Campania. Modern pizza was invented in Naples, and the dish and its variants have since become popular in many countries.

It has become one of the most popular foods in the world and a common fast food item in Europe, North America and Australasia; available at pizzerias (restaurants specializing in pizza), restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine, via pizza delivery, and as street food. Various food companies sell ready-baked pizzas, which may be frozen, in grocery stores, to be reheated in a home oven.

In 2017, the world pizza market was US$128 billion, and in the US it was $44 billion spread over 76,000 pizzerias. Overall, 13% of the U.S. population aged 2 years and over consumed pizza on any given day.

The Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (lit. True Neapolitan Pizza Association) is a non-profit organization founded in 1984 with headquarters in Naples that aims to promote traditional Neapolitan pizza. In 2009, upon Italy’s request, Neapolitan pizza was registered with the European Union as a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed dish, and in 2017 the art of its making was included on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Raffaele Esposito is often considered to be the father of modern pizza.

Cauliflower Pizza

The secret to the perfect cauliflower pizza crust is to use part cauliflower and blend in part gluten-free flours to make a veggie-packed pizza! Using a whole head of cauliflower leads to more moisture which you will have to squeeze out later, hence all the extra steps and labor you’ll encounter. My cauliflower pizza makes 3 nutrition-packed pizza’s from only 1/4 head of cauliflower!

And the best part, you can FREEZE these just like the Costco Cauliflower Pizzas! So if you quadruple the recipe to use up a whole head of cauliflower, you’ll make 12 freezer-friendly pizzas for many pizza dinners to come! Not to mention how delicious these pizzas are, considering they are “healthy”.

However, before you get working on the dough, make these ROASTED VEGETABLES to make your pizza taste just like Costco’s Cauliflower Roasted Vegetable Pizza!  It is phenomenal how close it is to the real thing!

Not quite low-carb, as much as I wanted to go completely gluten-free the cauliflower pizza crusts weren’t turning out without the addition of flour. As of a result, all brown rice flour resulted in a grainy dough and the crust ended up cracking. After much trial, I came to the conclusion that it’s needing in order to produce a well-textured pizza crust.

Now maybe that’s not the healthiest option but at least I’m not using cellulose powder, calcium chloride, tapioca starch, or xanthan gum like some of the ingredients found off of the Costco Cauliflower pizza.

So, flour it was but, if you are on a strict diet perhaps milling oatmeal or other milling light grain can be substituting for the all-purpose flour. Our children can even this cauliflower pizza crust! If you’ve had some good results using an alternative to all-purpose flour please leave a comment below!

Taste

Surprisingly this actually didn’t taste that bad! It actually resembled regular pizza and didn’t have a strong cauliflower flavor. The crust isn’t very thick and doesn’t get as crispy as regular pizza crust and it is a little bland tasting (not completely cardboard tasting though). I’m pretty sure the toppings and sauce mask any cauliflower flavor. I also noticed that the crust has cheese in the ingredients list, so it’s not dairy free which gives the crust a mild cheesy flavor that I think also hides the cauliflower. Overall this was pretty good and I’d be happy to have it again.

Convenience

The kit comes with two cauliflower pizza crusts, two tomato sauces and a freezer bag if you want to open the kit and not use one crust. You can choose your own toppings and create your own pizza to pop in the oven at home which I love. The best before date is about 3 months from the date we purchasing the kit.

Nutrition

1/4 of the crust is 130 calories, three grams of fat, 23 grams of carbohydrates, one gram of fibre, two grams of sugar and 370 mg of sodium. The ingredients list is posting in the photo above. I’ll definitely use up my second cauliflower pizza crust.

IS COSTCO CAULIFLOWER PIZZA HEALTHY?

The simple answer is yes, Costco cauliflower pizzas are healthier than regular pizza because they are lower in everything-calories, carbs, protein, fat, fiber, and sodium-but the biggest difference is in calories, carbs, and protein.

Cauliflower crust pizza from Costco is a lifesaver if you’re on a low-carb or keto diet and will help curb sugar cravings. Costco’s cauliflower pizza has a gluten-free certification that makes it safe for people who suffer from gluten intolerance.

Cauliflower pizza is therefore the most healthy pizza option at Costco.

WHAT TO SERVE WITH CAULIFLOWER PIZZA

Costco Cauliflower Pizza can be a complete meal, so no other dishes should be pairing with it; however, when serving it to the family for dinner, I recommend pairing it with a fresh salad, fries, and roasted veggies such as cauliflower, carrots, and cucumber.

Try to avoid serving it with high-calorie sauces such as mayonnaise, ketchup, and those other high-calorie condiments if you’re on a diet. This healthy cauliflower pizza would be great serving with some fresh veggies and orange juice.
