The Kato Show: Bruce Lee as the Green Hornet’s Sidekick

Before every third movie or show was about superheroes, Bruce Lee had a turn as a sidekick on TV’s The Green Hornet. He stole the show, captivated Americans and started the Cult of Lee back in Hong Kong. This article, along with others dedicated to Bruce, is including in a Newsweek Special Edition, Bruce Lee—75 Years of the Dragon.

When asked what the difference between a karate punch and a kung-fu punch was during his first U.S. screen test in 1965, Bruce Lee replied; “Well, a karate punch is like hit by an iron bar—whack!. A kung-fu punch is like being hit by an iron ball swung on an iron chain with an iron ball attached to the end; It goes WHANG!—and it hurts inside.” Then he stood up and showed exactly what that might look like in a flurry of hands and feet moving so fast they blurred.

The road to Bruce’s screen test started in Oakland, California, where his Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute began attracting the attention of the martial arts world. The rising kung-fu star struck up a friendship with Ed Parker, founder of American Kenpo Karate. Impressed with Bruce’s obvious skill and seriousness toward the martial arts, Parker invited him to attend the first-ever Long Beach International Karate Championships.

The gathering of expert martial artists was intended to be a showcase for an artform that had remained firmly outside the mainstream for centuries. On August 2, 1964, Bruce wowed an audience with demonstrations of his “one-inch punch” and insightful lectures of his fighting philosophy. “He just blew everyone away,” International attendee and future student of Bruce, Richard Bustillo, told the Long Beach Press- Telegram. “When he spoke, that whole auditorium was quiet. You could hear a pin drop.” One of the stunned onlookers was celebrity hairstylist Jay Sebring, who passed word around Hollywood of this amazing new martial artist. Eventually, William Dozier, producer of the hit show Batman, got a hold of some footage from the tournament and demanded Bruce come in for a screen test.

Two weeks after his father’s death, Bruce returned to Oakland from the funeral in Hong Kong and received a call from Dozier: The show Bruce had screen tested for—for the role of Charlie Chan’s son in a series to be titled Number One Son—had been scuttled. But the good news was that the massive audience reaction to Batman was letting Dozier unleash his new hero and sidekick series, The Green Hornet. He wanted to sign Bruce to a one-year option for $1,800. Bruce used the money to go back to Hong Kong and get his family’s affairs in order—and to continue his training.

Comics Spotlight on Green Hornet

THE ONLY THING the general public likely remembers about Green Hornet and his sidekick, Kato, is that Bruce Lee played Kato on a short-lived television series. Even comic geek that I am, I don’t own even one Green Hornet story.

But Green Hornet’s first appearance goes back to a radio program in 1936 and he first starred in a comic book in 1940. The masked avenger and Kato used superior hand-to-hand skills; and, the advanced technology in their car, known as Black Beauty, to fight crime.

The television show brought him back to public consciousness for a while. However, his appearances in comics were erratic. Over the years, comic companies Harvey, Dell, Gold Key, and NOW Comics, published the adventures, with NOW handling them most recently from 1989 to the early 90s.

Now, the Green Hornet and Kato have just been relaunched for this century by Dynamite Comics. The company offered a special sampler for Free Comic Book Day showcasing the creative talent working on several new Hornet series. I read the sampler, was intrigued, and now have to go find some of the comics. It helps that one of the series, Green Hornet: Year One, is being written by one of my favorite writers, Matt Wagner.

Kato is a fictional character from The Green Hornet franchise. This character has appeared with the Green Hornet in radio, film, television, book and comic book versions. Kato was the Hornet’s assistant and has been played by a number of actors. On radio, Kato was initially played by Raymond Hayashi, then Roland Parker who had the role for most of the run, and in the later years Mickey Tolan and Paul Carnegie. Keye Luke took the role in the movie serials, and in the television series he was portrayed by Bruce Lee. Jay Chou played Kato in the 2011 Green Hornet film.

Character history

Kato was Britt Reid’s valet, who doubled as The Green Hornet’s masked driver; and partner to help him in his vigilante adventures, disguised as the activities of a racketeer and his chauffeur/bodyguard/enforcer. According to the storyline, years before the events depicted in the series, Britt Reid had saved Kato’s life while traveling in the Far East. Depending on the version of the story, this prompted Kato to become Reid’s assistant or friend. In the anthology book The Green Hornet Chronicles from Moonstone Books, author Richard Dean Starr’s story; “Nothing Gold Can Stay: An Origin Story of Kato” explores the character’s background and how he ends up living in America; suggesting that Kato met Britt Reid on a later trip back to his homeland while in search of his mother.
