Life
Lincoln born in a backwoods cabin 3 miles (5 km) south of Hodgenville, Kentucky, and taken to a farm in the neighbouring valley of Knob Creek when he was two years old. His earliest memories were of this home and, in particular, of a flash flood that once washed away the corn and pumpkin seeds he had helped his father plant. His father, Thomas Lincoln, was the descendant of a weaver’s apprentice who had migrated from England to Massachusetts in 1637.
Though much less prosperous than some of his Lincoln forebears, Thomas was a sturdy pioneer. On June 12, 1806, he married Nancy Hanks. The Hanks genealogy is difficult to trace, but Nancy appears to have been of illegitimate birth. She described as “stoop-shouldered, thin-breasted, sad,” and fervently religious. Thomas and Nancy Lincoln had three children: Sarah, Abraham, and Thomas, who died in infancy.
1830
In March 1830 the Lincoln family undertook a second migration, this time to Illinois, with Lincoln himself driving the team of oxen. just reached the age of 21, he about to begin life on his own. As a flatboatman, he made a voyage down the Mississippi River to New Orleans, Louisiana. (This his second visit to that city, his first having made in 1828, while he still lived in Indiana.) Upon his return to Illinois he settled in New Salem, a village of about 25 families on the Sangamon River.
Family
Lincoln was born to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Thomas a strong and determined pioneer who found a moderate level of prosperity and well respected in the community.
The couple had two other children: Lincoln’s older sister Sarah and younger brother Thomas, who died in infancy.
When young Lincoln was nine years old, his mother died of tremetol (milk sickness) at age 34, on October 5, 1818. The event was devastating to him, and young Lincolngrew more alienated from his father and quietly resented the hard work placed on him at an early age.
Children and Wife
Lincoln married to Mary Todd on November 4, 1842. Todd was a high-spirited, well-educated woman from a distinguished Kentucky family.
When the couple became engaged in 1840, many of their friends and family couldn’t understand Mary’s attraction; at times Lincoln questioned it himself. In 1841, the engagement suddenly broken off, most likely at Lincoln’s initiative.
Mary and Lincoln met later at a social function and eventually married in 1842. The couple had four sons – Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace and Thomas “Tad” – of whom only Robert Todd survived to adulthood.
1837
Before marrying Todd, Lincoln involved with other potential matches. Around 1837, he purportedly met and became romantically involved with Anne Rutledge. Before they a chance to engaged, a wave of typhoid fever came over New Salem. And Anne died at age 22.
Her death said to left Lincoln severely depressed. However, several historians disagree on the extent of Lincoln’s relationship with Rutledge. And his level of sorrow at her death may be more the makings of legend.
