Stove Top stuffing

Stove Top is a stuffing that was introduced by General Foods in 1972. It is a quick cooking (“instant”) stuffing that is available in supermarkets. Unlike traditional stuffing, Stove Top can be prepared on the stove, in a pot, and can also be prepared in a microwave oven. It is used as a side dish for meals as well as a medium in which some meats (pork, chicken) can be baked. It is sold in boxes and canisters. In 2005 it was reported that Kraft Heinz, which has owned the brand since 1990, sells about 60 million boxes of Stove Top stuffing at Thanksgiving.

STOVE TOP® One-Dish Chicken & Stuffing Bake

INGREDIENTS NEEDED

  • Chicken – You can use pre-cooked shredded chicken, chopped Rotisserie chicken, or canned chicken. I’ve tried/used them all and they’re all delicious! (You can also use leftover turkey after Thanksgiving)
  • Cream of Chicken Soup – Our family loves using 2 cans of cream of chicken, but you can also use cream of celery, cream of onion, or cream of mushroom
  • Milk – I use 2%
  • Stove Top Stuffing – I love the savory herbs blend, but any kind will work. You can also use Pepperidge Farm stuffing if you prefer a crunchier topping.
  • Water or Chicken Broth
  • Optional Seasonings – I like adding a light sprinkle of salt, pepper, and my favorite Mrs. Dash Onion and Herb seasoning for extra flavor. (I also use it in this delicious Stuffing Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole)

How Do I Make Shredded Chicken At Home?

Crockpots are the easiest way to make shredded chicken at home.

  1. Place 3 lbs of boneless, skinless (about 4 large) chicken breasts or thighs in the bottom of the slow cooker, season with 1 tsp of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onions powder, and pour 1 cup of chicken broth or water over it all.
  2. Cook on the low setting for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours.
  3. After it is fully cooked, it will be very tender, and you can easily shred it with a fork or with an electric hand mixer.

In addition to the fact that 3 lbs of chicken can be made into 6 cups of shredded chicken, you will also have leftovers. You can use the chicken in other recipes or freeze it in a freezer-safe bag to be used later on.
