ham sandwich on hawaiian rolls
Hello and welcome to solsarin. This post is about “ham sandwich on hawaiian rolls“.
Ham
Ham is pork from a leg cut that has been preserved by wet or dry curing, with or without smoking.[1] As a processed meat, the term “ham” includes both whole cuts of meat and ones that have been mechanically formed.
Ham is made around the world, including a number of regional specialties, such as Westphalian ham and some varieties of Spanish jamón. In addition, numerous ham products have specific geographical naming protection, such as prosciutto di Parma in Europe, and Smithfield ham in the US.

Make the Sauce:
I bought Trader Joe’s Everything Bagel seasoning a few months ago, and I have found that I rarely use it. I thought I would use it on everything, but I just don’t. I gave it a try in making the sauce for these Ham and Cheese Sliders and it works perfectly…so good! Substitute the poppy seeds and dried minced onion with one tablespoon of the Everything Bagel Seasoning. Since this seasoning mix has both poppy seeds and dried minced onion in it along with a few other seasonings, it makes a great substitute. So if you are looking to use it up…try it on sliders!
Recipe Notes
*Substitute: 1 tablespoon Everything Bagel Seasoning for the poppy seeds and the dried minced onion.
*Make this recipe with leftover ham.
*Add 1 cup pineapple chunks to make these Hawaiian Style Ham and Cheese Sliders.
HAWAIIAN HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS
These aren’t just your average ham and cheese sliders! Sometimes called “funeral sandwiches” because they’re a popular dish to serve at funerals and other Southern gatherings, the hot ham and cheese sliders are an easy, crowd-pleasing option that always disappears fast.
INGREDIENTS
- Salted butter: the base of the sandwich spread.
- Mustard: I use yellow mustard, but Dijon mustard is also a great option.
- Brown sugar: a sweet touch that contrasts nicely with the salty ham.
- Poppy seeds: give the spread texture and a bit of flavor.
- Worcestershire sauce: for savory, umami flavor in the spread.
- Garlic powder: for even more flavor!
- Onion: finely grated on the smallest side of a box grater.
- Hawaiian rolls: I use these King’s Hawaiian rolls, but you can substitute with another similar package of slider buns.
- Ham: thinly-sliced from the deli counter.
- Cheese: I like cheddar, but Swiss or American are also good options.
HOW TO MAKE HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS
These easy sliders can be assembled in advance, making them ideal for busy weeknight dinners or party hosting.
- Stir together brown sugar butter mixture.
- Spread butter mixture on top and bottom of rolls.
- Add ham and cheese, then replace the tops of the rolls.
- Arrange the sliders in a greased baking dish; cover with foil.
- Bake in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes, until the cheese and butter melt.
TIPS FOR THE BEST HAM AND CHEESE SLIDERS RECIPE
- Prep ahead for easy meals and parties! Assemble the sandwiches, cover them tightly, and store them in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
- Remember to soften the butter at room temperature before assembling the sandwiches. This makes it easy to mix and spread.
- Use the smallest side of a box grater to finely grate the onion. This will help the onion mix smoothly into the butter and will avoid any large chunks of onion throughout.
- King’s Hawaiian rolls are my top pick for a sweet, fluffy sandwich bun that pairs nicely with the salty ham.
Ham and Cheese Sliders with Leftover Ham
Although you’ll most often see these easy sandwiches with deli ham, they are a great way to use up that leftover Christmas or Easter ham. Just be sure to slice the ham as thinly as possible for the best results.
What cheese goes best with ham?
We love swiss cheese on our baked ham sandwiches so that’s what we use here. If you’d like a creamier cheese, another option would be to use white American cheese. Both will give just a little different flavor, but we’ve enjoyed both types of cheese on these sandwiches.
How can you keep ham and cheese sliders warm?
These baked sliders are best served warm, so how do you keep them warm? The easiest way is to keep the sandwiches covered with foil in a warm oven (170 degrees Fahrenheit) until serving. Pull them out right before guests go through the buffet line. Keep the sandwiches covered with foil even when they are sitting on the countertop.
If you want to, you can cut the sandwiches, wrap them individually in foil and place them in a slow cooker on the warm setting. This will keep them perfectly warm!
Can you freeze ham and cheese sliders?
You can easily make ahead ham and cheese sliders. Make them to the point of baking. Then wrap them well in foil and place them in a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. I like to allow the sandwiches to at least partially defrost so they don’t have to be in the oven as long. You can bake the sandwiches straight from the freezer…just extra time to the baking time to make sure they are cooked all the way through.
