Hello and welcome to solsarin. This post is about “hawaiian ham and swiss sliders“.

Slider (sandwich)

A slider is an American term for a small hamburger, typically around 2 inches (5 cm) across, made with a bun.

History

“Slider” is believed to have been first used to describe the onion-steamed small burgers at White Castle restaurants.[1] The term has since been picked-up by other restaurants,[2] usually to describe a small hamburger, but sometimes used to describe any small sandwich made with a slider bun. White Castle later trademarked the spelling variant “Slyder” and used it between 1985 and 2009.[3]

Sliders can be served as hors d’oeuvres, snacks, or entrées.[4] They have since become a popular game day appetizer in the United States.[5]

Hawaiian Roll Ham and Swiss Sliders

Ham and Swiss Sliders are stacked with ham and melty Swiss cheese then smothered with a honey mustard glaze for a truly special sandwich. These Hawaiian Roll Sliders are perfect for tailgating and absolutely disappear at parties!

INGREDIENTS FOR HAWAIIAN HAM SLIDERS

  • Hawaiian rolls– I’m smart enough to know you don’t mess with perfection, and these sweet, fluffy rolls simply make the best ham sliders.
  • Thick sliced ham– Most recipes I’ve seen call for thin sliced deli ham, but I love using thick slices cut right off of a ham roast. You can buy a small pre-cooked ham shank or roast at the grocery store and cut slices from it. Of course, this is also the perfect way to use up leftover ham from a Christmas or Easter dinner!
  • Swiss Cheese– You can use any cheese you like, but ham and Swiss are like Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe–they’re meant to be together. It also doesn’t hurt that Ohio is the #1 producer of Swiss cheese and home to two award-winning Swiss cheeses–Guggisberg Baby Swiss and Pearl Valley Mild Swiss!

For the Glaze:

  • 5 Tablespoons salted butter, melted
  • 2 Tablespoons whole grain mustard (see notes)
  • 1 Tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat a rimmed sheet pan or baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Whisk together the sauce ingredients and set aside.
  3. Place the bottom half of the slider rolls on the baking sheet. Layer the Swiss cheese slices evenly over top, followed by the ham slices. These will cut easier if you align the ham slicer over each individual slider bun.
  4. Place the other half of the Hawaiian rolls on top. Pour the glaze over top of the rolls, and use a pastry brush to make sure it’s evenly coating the sides and top of the rolls.
  5. Cover with foil and bake for 10 minutes, then uncover and bake an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the tops are toasted and slightly crisp. Serve immediately.

NOTES

Whole grain mustard can usually be found in the condiment store of your local mustard. It may also be called stone ground mustard. You should be able to see the little seedy grains in the mustard. I prefer regular whole grain mustard, not whole grain dijon.

Hot Hawaiian Ham & Swiss Cheese Sliders

Ingredients

  • 12 count Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 12 slices deli-style ham
  • 12 slices swiss cheese
  • 12 pineapple rings
  • ¼ cup mayo – (I used reduced fat)
  • 4 tablespoons butter – melted
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons poppy seeds

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees and lightly grease a 9-inch baking dish or similar sized casserole dish.
  • Slice rolls crosswise so that the rolls are split in half. (Do not separate the rolls, they should all still be connected when you slice them so that the bottom halves stay connected and the bottom halves stay connected)
  • Spread mayo over the bottom halves. Top with ham slices, then swiss cheese, and then pineapple slices. Top with the top halves of the rolls
  • In a small bowl whisk together melted butter, dijon mustard, brown sugar, garlic powder, and poppy seeds. Brush mixture over the sandwiches.
  • Bake for 10-15 minutes until cheese is melty and sliders are browned on top.

Notes

These can be made in advance, covered tightly and stored in the fridge up to 24 hours, and baked just before serving. If baking after chilling, add 10 minutes to baking time.

What Ham Makes the Best Sliders?

You can use any type of ham you prefer. Honey ham, smoked ham, black forest deli ham are all great choices! These party sandwiches are also a great way to use up leftover ham from Christmas or Easter.

Can You Freeze Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders?

While you can freeze unbaked sliders, it’s best to do so before adding the sauce. Once you have thaw them, just add the sauce and baked a usual.

If you are wanting to freeze leftovers that have baked, just wrap them in a couple layers of plastic wrap. Stick them in a freezer bag for up to a couple of months.

For best results when reheating them, allow them to thaw overnight in the fridge first. Then just put them in a preheated oven until they heated through.

Notes

Placing the rolls in the pan can like a puzzle so just fit them as you can. When cutting, cut along the lines of the tops of the rolls as the bottoms might not exactly match up.

Why Sliders Called Sliders?

The term ‘sliders’ originated in the 1940s during the Second World War. My Grandfather was a young man of 20 then and had enlisted in the Merchant Marines. For decades, I heard him refer to the burgers my Grandmother would fry up in a pan as a slider, referring to the grease that would build in the pan as the beef seared. I only figured out what they were when we all piled in the car and headed for the Key City Diner in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, a haunt for my grandparents during the War when my Grandfather would get leave. He always ordered a plate of sliders, or “greasy little hamburgers that after only two bites would slide right down!”

What Goes With Ham And Cheese Sliders On Hawaiian Rolls?

I generally just serve these easy ham and cheese sliders on Hawaiian rolls with chips or oven fries, a quick pickle relish macaroni salad, or even potato salad. If you feel like you need additional items of substance because you’re feeding a very large group, consider a mac and cheese or racks of ribs that can made right in your oven.
