sweet hawaiian roll sliders
Hello and welcome to solsarin. This post is about “sweet hawaiian roll sliders“.
Slider (sandwich)
A slider is an American term for a small hamburger, typically around 2 inches (5 cm) across, made with a bun.
History
“Slider” is believed to have been first used to describe the onion-steamed small burgers at White Castle restaurants.[1] The term has since been picked-up by other restaurants,[2] usually to describe a small hamburger, but sometimes used to describe any small sandwich made with a slider bun. White Castle later trademarked the spelling variant “Slyder” and used it between 1985 and 2009.[3]
Sliders can be served as hors d’oeuvres, snacks, or entrées.[4] They have since become a popular game day appetizer in the United States.[5]

Hawaiian Sweet Roll Cubano Sliders Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 (12-count) packs Hawaiian sweet rolls
- 1 to 2 pounds sliced deli ham
- 9 slices Swiss cheese
- 24 dill or butter bread pickle slices
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion (or 1 teaspoon onion powder)
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
Steps to Make It
- Gather the ingredients.
- Preheat the oven to 350 F. Without separating them, slice all the rolls in half, crosswise.
- Arrange the bottom halves in a 13-x 9-inch baking pan.
- Layer the ham, cheese, and pickles over the bottom halves, then replace the top halves of the rolls.
- In a small bowl, stir together the butter, chopped onion or onion powder, and mustard.
- Evenly pour the onion-butter mixture over the tops of the rolls and spread to coat the rolls with a pastry brush until evenly coated.
- Cover the rolls with aluminum foil and bake until golden and the cheese is melted, about 10 minutes. Serve warm.
Recipe Tips
- If you can’t find Hawaiian sweet rolls, potato rolls or Parker House rolls work.
- The Cubanos keep for 3 days wrapped in foil and refrigerated.
Make Ahead
- Day before serving: Assemble Cubanos, omitting the mustard butter sauce. Wrap in foil and refrigerate. When ready to cook, prepare the sauce, pour over rolls, and bake.
- Or, same day: Prepare fully, including mustard butter sauce, wrapped in foil and refrigerate 30 minutes to 1 hour before baking.
Freeze and Save for Later
- Allow the Cubano sliders to cool completely, then wrap in plastic wrap followed by aluminum foil.
- Freeze and enjoy within 3 months.
- To reheat, remove from fridge; remove foil and plastic wrap and thaw at room temp. Bake for 350 for 5 minutes or cheese melts.
Recipe Variations
- Add salami or roasted pork or BOTH for an even meatier Cubano slider.
- Add an extra layer of cheese if you prefer cheesier sandwiches.
- Make the rolls double-decker! After layering the ham, cheese, and pickles, add another bottom layer of sweet Hawaiian rolls, then repeat with another layer of ham, cheese, and pickles. Replace the top half of sweet Hawaiian rolls and bake as directed.
Making the Sweet Roll Sliders
Ingredients
- 1 package Hawaiian-style sweet rolls
- 9 oz thin-sliced deli ham
- 10 slices Swiss cheese
- 1/2 cup poppy seed or honey mustard dressing
- 2 tablespoons butter, , melted
- 1 teaspoon dry minced onion
- 1 teaspoon course-ground mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon poppy seeds
Instructions
- Remove rolls from package, lay flat, and slice in two (so you have one single top piece and one bottom piece). Separate and lay side by side. Spread with dressing.
- Layer Swiss cheese slices over both sections of sandwiches, covering as much as possible.
- Layer ham over the bottom section of sandwiches. Carefully pick up top and flip over onto bottom section. Place sandwich rolls into aluminum pan. (Or if baking fresh, place into foil lined 9×13 dish.)
- In small bowl, combine remaining ingredients and stir. Brush or pour over tops of sandwiches.
- Cover aluminum pan tightly with lid or aluminum foil. Label (be sure to include reheating instructions.) Place in freezer and store up to two months.
- Thaw overnight in refrigerator (skip this step if cooking from fresh).
- Bake in 375F oven, covered, for 20-25 minutes until centers are heated through and cheese has melted.
Freezing Your Hawaiian Sweet Roll Sliders
Now, simply cover and label! (I get these aluminum lids for the steam tray pans at Sam’s Club, where oddly enough they sell the pans in a pack of 36 and the lids in a pack of 30…kinda like that 8 hot dogs and 10 buns deal…ha ha ha!) *still scratching my head on this one*
BUT – you don’t have to have the aluminum lids. You can cover with just regular ol’ aluminum foil and they will do just fine. No need to get fancy.
Be sure to include the date and reheating instructions!
These babies will live happily in your freezer for up to 2 months. But once you’ve tasted them, you’ll know you’ll probably never have to worry about them staying around that long. Promise.
When you’re ready to feast, pull your tray out of the freezer and allow it to thaw in your refrigerator overnight. Then, simply pop the tray of sliders into the oven and bake, covered, at 375 degrees Fahrenheit about 20-25 minutes.
Pioneer Woman Hawaiian Roll Sliders
Why You’ll Love This Recipe:
- Easy to make: It couldn’t be easier to make these for a crowd. Only six ingredients are needed, and they take about 30 minutes to prepare.
- Perfect party food: Parties are a great time to serve these Pioneer Woman Hawaiian Roll Sliders. They can be served at a bbq, a kids’ party, or even on game day.
- Kid-friendly: The whole family will enjoy these ham sliders. Small enough for little ones, yet flavorful enough for hungry adults.
Ingredients That You’ll Need:
- Hawaiian Rolls: The star of the show is these little sweet bread rolls. Purchase a pack of 12 at the store or make your own Hawaiian rolls.
- Ham: If you’re in a hurry, you can pick up some precooked, thinly-sliced deli ham from the store. You can use any variety of flavors. My recommendation is honey or something sweet.
- Cheese: This recipe calls for swiss cheese, but you could use another type of cheese if you prefer. You could use provolone or mozzarella!
- Dijon Mustard and Honey: For these Hawaiian sliders, I like to make my own honey dijon because I can control how sweet it is.
- Poppyseed Dressing: You can buy a bottle from the store or make your own. Those who don’t like the dressing can skip it.
How To Make It :
- Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Combine the Dijon and honey in a separate bowl. Stir until smooth.
- In a lightly sprayed baking dish, place the bottoms of the 9 rolls.
- brush each roll with honey Dijon.
- Place a slice of ham on top of each, followed by a slice of cheese.
- Place the top half of each roll on top of each sandwich and brush the inside with more honey Dijon.
- Apply poppyseed dressing liberally to the outside of each top.
- Cover with foil and cook for 15-18 minutes until cheese is melted.
- Broil for 4 minutes, or until the rolls are crisped up a little.
- Serve while still hot. enjoy!
TIPS
- It’s best to use a 10×15 pan, as directed. Two packages of King’s Hawaiian rolls fit perfectly in that size pan. I tried to get away with using two differently sized pans on my first attempt. It didn’t work well because there was extra space in each pan, and the sauce ran into the extra pan space, rather than absorbing into the sandwiches. (On my second attempt, I bought the 10 X 15″ Pyrex pan at Bed, Bath and Beyond (using a 20% off coupon, of course) — and it was fairly inexpensive.)
- I had good luck using both a serrated bread knife and a serrated electric knife to cut the rolls in half horizontally. You don’t want to smush them or deflate them.
- Slice through the baked sandwiches with kitchen shears or a sharp high-quality knife for clean portions.
